Note that I have the door wide open here so its not a closed unit, for the sake of providing a example of air temperature rather than radiation influencing the reading it does not matter. You will just want to close the door to get a true enclosure air temp reading. In case this wasnt obvious. Hope this was helpful 😀

My heat gun has three modes, room temperature, surface temperature, and body temperature. I use the room temperature mode for ambient temperature, and the surface temperature for the basking spot

This is exactly the kind of thing I needed as I was trying to figure out where to do my probe placement for a radiant heat panel, and almost all of the information I could find about probe placement seemed to assume heat mat use. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

No problem I’m glad it was of use 😊

Excellent video. You didn't mention what you think is the best place for a thermostat probe. Personally, I place the probe at the cooler section, and let the basking sites take care of themselves once I have checked them, as I think the most important thing is that the animal can cool off - overheating is dangerous. Many thermometers are inaccurate, I use the SensorPush system: if one couples the sensor with a SensorPush Gateway, a temperature and relative humidity readings are transmitted every fifteen minutes via the internet, so one can check it on a phone or computer. One can set the system to alert one if the levels are above or below the desired range. The system is highly accurate, the only downside is expense.

Thanks 😊 If I were to redo the thermostat probe placement I’d go cool end too for the same reason. If we get really technical it doesn’t matter where it goes since you would be putting it somewhere shaded, and not touching anything to measure the air temperature. Air temperature will be the same. Just a really tricky way to place it

This is such a helpful video!!! I almost wonder if the reason people conflate the two is because so many people use heat mats with thermostats rather than heat lights. Especially in rack-style set ups, I don't see as many people paying attention to air temperatures. So long as the reptile gets enough "belly heat" to digest its food and survive, what do air temperatures matter? That being said, this makes me look at care guides with a more critical eye than ever before. Some care guides are even more vague and just say "hot end" or "cool end" without even specifying basking temps vs air temps! Very confusing. I hope new keepers out there find this video!

There’s a long way to go before this is common knowledge in the hobby especially with radiation affecting measurements.

When using infrared thermometers, it is also important to know that they can have very different readings, depending on the material of the surface(and it's emissivity). If you don't adjust for emissivity, you should treat your infrared thermometer only as a rough measuring tool.

When basking temperatures are given on caresheets etc, do you consider that to be surface temp of basking spot? I ask because I record surface temps in my garden in summer in Wales, far exceeding the basking temps given for tropical, and some desert species.
@ReptilesandResearch
@ReptilesandResearch 2 года назад
I don’t know really because everyone conflates the two 😅 But I normally consider it surface temps, otherwise they tend to describe ambient. But it could be variable depending upon who wrote it
@timreptile
@timreptile 2 года назад
@@ReptilesandResearch it’s tricky… I think the method of recording really needs to be standardised, and recording the surface temp for basking spots would be best, but I think the temps would far exceed those quoted for many species currently.

@@timreptile If you were to go off the BIAZA UV Tool, they note the basking surface temperature alongside recommended air temps (Summer and Winter, Day and Night). This would be the best source of information over care sheets, which aren't standardised, as Liam says. Of course, not every species is on it, but it may be enough to get an idea.

Good tips. Have you ever tried the temp and humidity readers meant to sit on desks? I don't know if they're good or not. I have one of those, but I saw someone testing few different cheap ones you get from stores and the humidity readers were up to 12% off the real reading. So I got exo terra to replace it just in case.

I haven’t actually, might try them

For humidity readings you can actually "calibrate" any hydrometer with something called the salt test! For cheap hydrometers you can just add or subtract the difference, for more expensive ones you can actually adjust them. I hope that helps!

Hi i hav a boarded dragon an after wathing alot of ur video see the thermostat probe should away from basking area so what temp do i set stat to to get right temp of basking spot as i want perfrct heat for her eny other tips much apreciated

I use the probes on the glass or inside the bedding where I have a heatpad on the outside so that the thermostat knows what temperature to bring the heatpad to. What about those round analogue thermometers? I have one on each side of the terrarium and the temperature difference can be very big (even 10 degrees)
@Shades1535
@Shades1535 Год назад
So, if I am trying to control basking temperature with a stat, should I place the prob on the basking rock so that it is touching?
@nedlamb9804
@nedlamb9804 2 года назад
Because it's summer my dimming stat keeps my solar basking floodlight and spotlights pretty dim all day especially for my gecko, this obviously means the radiation output is poor, should I introduce fans to lower the air temp so the bulbs kick in more to keep the radiation output up to properly replicate the sun? I have already added extra ventilation on my vivariums. I use 75 watt bulbs at the moment

You can do, I’ve done that on my beardie. Although on my snakes I’ve just turned lights off because temperatures were too high. Depends how much the species is dependent on heliothermy vs thigmothermy and what you thinks best
