This week we meet up with Simo Veharanta of SV Auto again (you may remember him from another air cooled 911 feature we did you can watch again here: • HANDCRAFTED 400+ Horse... ). This time we're taking a look at another one of his air cooled 911 engines built for a customer car and how he keeps these engines running cool with a new oil cooler from CSF!

Dunno why some ppl are complaining about the cooler. It's direct bolt on, performs better, looks stock, and cheaper than oem. Also that shop is scarily clean. Thought it was a kitchen for a moment lol

I wish this cooler was around when I was rebuilding my air-cooled engine. Great news as these engines need all the extra cooling they can get.

And let me guess, by the time an air-cooled Porsche engine is being refined to this level it's going to cost the price of an entire GR Supra 😂.

The big tube on the bottom is not a ‘bypass tube’ it’s the main oil supply from the dry sump tank into the oil pump. The oil thermostat bypasses the two holes at the top of the cooler flange for warmup. Once warmed up, it opens and allows the oil to flow thru the top two holes and the cooler.

Always great info , I've been working on a much more budget porsche 912 air cooled for a friend. Hey Mike, what happend to the B15 spec V build ? Saw one for sale cheap and I thought about using it as a track car (stock engine but handling mods). It would be fun to have an update even if its a scrapped project. Thanks !

@@motoiq Thanks for update , I'm guessing the flaws of the QR25 we're the main factor ! What did you think about the chassis for the track, would you take a B13 or a B15 (if they're both sr20) ?
@motoiq

The QR25 sucks. I would take neither. If I wanted a FWD car for the track it would be a DC2 Integra or a EG or EK Civic.

Super cool engine/cooler video❤. What are the oil temps the coolers have to keep the heat at bay for the engine to live?
@motoiq
@motoiq 10 месяцев назад
Oil should stay below 250 degrees ideally. It can go higher for short periods but under racing conditions 250 is the limit.

There's no argument, water-cooling is always better than air-cooling. Water is more dense, and can hold more energy. That being said, the air-cooled Porsche engines just _SOUND SO MUCH BETTER!_ so raspy and raw, like a chainsaw.

Fantastic engine and experienced people working on it. The CSF guy is another story. All that mambo jambo about the cooler being awesome for a selfclaimed 10% better cooling and 8% less pressure drop with no data? Just to confirm the guy is a snake oil salesman, if the joke at the beginning didn't make it clear enough. They made a cooler to look stock, not for improvement or modernization. Why not Microtube one?
@motoiq
@motoiq 10 месяцев назад
In this particular market, retromod and vintage racing, the stock look is very important, especially to Porsche people, if you have ever been around them, you would understand. Just like this engine and exhaust system. This cooler is designed to work better being a direct factory bolt in replacement and also to look stock.

This is a non related topic to the video. I have a challenge for you if possible to build a Chrysler 3.8 V6 that came in 2008-2010 Chrysler town and country and Dodge caravan and also Jeep vehicles. I would love to see one built for example my wife has a 2010 Chrysler town and country minivan with a 3.8 V 6 and wanted to make a sleeper out of it. Build a N/A EFI 3.8 Balanced bigger pistons, camshaft, port the heads multi angle valve job better valve springs and anything to improve the power and efficiency of it. Thank you for your time. We have never been asked to build one. To me the best bet is some of the supercharger kits they make for these. There are not much other parts available which makes it more of a development project and hence expensive. They are good, strong and reliable motors generally.

just get an external cooler and run lines to the front of the car. $1k for a tiny cooler crammed between a hot motor and the firewall makes no sense.

with the values of 993's where they are most people would want an OEM part, no matter the cost, to maintain the provenance and value. I'd rather see holes drilled and hoses run

@@motoiq Someone who writes copy for marketing purposes. I don't mean that the guy in the video literally does that for a living. I just mean that he discusses his product in a similar manner - like a sales brochure - and as a guy with an engineering mind, I find it annoying. It's just a pet peeve of mine. He discussed those criteria which make up the performance metrics you would expect for something like an oil cooler...lower pressure loss, higher flow, more heat rejection. Those things ARE the performance of an oil cooler. Nothing more need be said. But he adds, "And it's got better performance," as if that were a fourth improvement. I'm not saying anything bad about him or his product. I just hate that detail.

I subscribe to maybe 30 or so channels and they all request subscriptions only one time and not throughout the video. I too will be repairing and YouTubing my vintage cars' adventures and certainly respect the audiences' subscription participation. But after a while, the audience will lose attention to why they are there and start looking for "I know it's coming, I know it's coming... BANG I knew it!" moment. So this is not a verbal or written criticism, but only an observation. @motoiq

@motoiq
@motoiq 10 месяцев назад
If you paid attention, this cooler is a direct factory replacement with better cooling and less pressure drop made with better materials, and better construction at a better price. It was designed with the engine builder, SV Automotive, to complement his 500 whp naturally aspirated air-cooled Porsche motors. He gets about 100k for these so this isn't some lame knockoff.
