I don't speak korean, but I can tell you are both passionate about swordsmanship!! This is such a cool video of different sword styles. Thank you for making it!
This was very nice to see - much better than most «longsword versus katana» videos out there. I loved the spirit of mutual understanding. Would love to see more, perhaps comparing technique and tactics!

This is a funny role reversal for me! As a HEMAist this is a pleasure to see! And Mr. Sangyoon Kim displays quite good Lichtenauer i think, you seem like a great representative for HEMA in Korea and I love to see this. 💕
Nice video! Good fencing from both sides. The Zwerchhau is a very important strike in the Liechtenauer system, and this gentleman does it beautifully. I’ve been practicing and teaching Liechtenauer’s system for 16 years, and it’s lovely to see so many people appreciating it! 👍👍👍
@@kronoscamron7412 No, the "bind" is any time the swords cross and some kind of pressure is maintained. Working from binds is one of the central concepts of the Liechtenauer school of swordsmanship. :)
@@Kunstdesfechtens that makes sense, thank you, I was wondering because he would twist the sword but couldn't execute it because the opponent was taller. but I guess it would also be correct if he hit other areas of the opponent's body, thanks for the clarification.
@@Kunstdesfechtens I am really wondering how would the result be if they play outside. The floor is too slippery for longsword player. The kendo player is a pro swordsman, I like how he hits so fast lol
A very nice video showing both the beauty of both Kendo and European swordsmanship. It would also be awesome if he demonstrated a bit of half swording to give them an idea on how to defeat a swordsman wearing a plate armor.
What I picked up from the video alone, is that European swordsmanship is fluid, deceptive, and flexible. Kendo on the other hand is direct, but very swift. Loved every second of it.
Yeah but the Kendo guy had control of distance here, the HEMA guy seems to be misjudging how far he was compared to the Kendo guy. Also yeah your can do more stuff in HEMA Longsword than Kendo or Kenjutsu (Zournhau, Krumpau, Halfswording, false edge cuts and Mordhau are more possible in HEMA than in Kendo and Kenjutsu) but te basics are fairly similar right down to the fudamental stances
@@tucsonmclean5138 yeah there is a skill gap between most HEMA practicioners and Kendo but thats more on the ages of the Sports than the systems themselves. HEMA Longsword despite being ironically older (the Longsword was only ever used in actual combat for 250 years) than Kendo and Kenjutsu is only recently comparitively being revived and practiced regularly.
Thank you very much for the English translation. It's great to see the strengths of each style (and combatant). I would be interested to see the kendoka using a steel katana and the longsworder in proper protective gear. (Though fencing in a shirt and tie is very cool.😎)

Speed and timing for the kendoka, longsword should have played more defensive to use his reach, instead of rushing forward. At close engagement, smallest weapon is the quickest !! Another thing, was that longsword was focused on head, not varying targets. Kendoka exploited mid section and lower body openings. Very smart. To be fair, there is a skill mismatch here !!
Hello, I've done a bit of HEMA longsword and kendo, and watched vs between them. I hope you don't mind my commentary. When longsword guy went for twerhau / zwerchau there were openings to slice / press his arms as he goes around. Slices don't score in kumdo and are hard to spot in HEMA too, but they're one of the main ways to counter the fast twerhau cut around. Like at 6:11 the shinai wielding guy has a perfect opening to press against longsword feder guy's hands and forearms. At 6:23 the kumdo guy, instead of snapping back like in kumdo, could have held the point forward and pressed into feder guy's arms 7:04 7:13 kumdo guy could've stopped the twerhau by pressing into the hands or just stabbing feder guy, but the kumdo rules withdrawl opened him to twerhau 6:32 7:23 all those kumdo guy's do (torso) hits were awesome! 7:36 on thrusting first, that's just a ruleset difference, it's much easier to score a thrust with how most HEMA is run. Many cuts in HEMA are meant to end in a thrust (cuts in some traditional kenjutsu schools are also meant to open for a thrust). The counter I've seen from kendoka is to go for arm hits instead of head hits, and if there's no counterthrust then the way is clear for a thrust (tsuki) of your own I'm not as experienced or skilled as the two of you are, I'm just giving commentary. I really enjoyed watching this video and I hope y'all do more. ... oh yeah! The techniques of longsword that the feder guy didn't really use much were rising back edge cuts, it would be cool to see you guys do another match but longsword guy uses more back edge uppercuts that a single edged katana doesn't do. You can see examples of it in this Martin Fabian video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dwm0tWBP52A.html
Really nice display of skill from both of you. I am really curious if replacing the Shinai with a Katana would change the dynamics of the fight. The Shenai is quite a bit lighter than an actual katana if I am getting that right. I am wondering how much speed you would lose on that transition. But as I said. Really impressive and nice display of skill!
Well, you will have a harder time controlling the weapon with a steel blade compare to the shinai or the bokken. Even the feder (practice version of the longsword) is kinda lighter than real swords. The execution of the technique won't be a problem because you don't actually try to muscle your way through the cut when you swing it. A shinai, a bokken or a real sword works the same way when you just let the blade fall on it's own when you extended the arms forward
@@jaketheasianguy3307 I have a sparring longsword which weights the same as my feder and the way I fight changes a lot if I use it. It is as flexible as a feder but hits a bit harder and you need to change the way you use it since you are slower. The balance of your sword can change a lot of the dynamics in combat. For reference: I have a Fabri-Amorum HEMA longsword (which basically is a shieldless feder) and a blackfencer steel generation longsword.
@@Timbo_Boy well, i have only played around with with real swords and black fencer/red dragon synthetic practice swords. Blunt steel is kinda too expensive for me, living in third world country and all, so i'm just speaking from experience. To me, playing around with the synthetic longsword still feels lighter than my katana, or it's totally the blade's fault since it's a bit tip heavy. The difference usually when i tried to do stuffs that required alot of movements like switching guards, feints, the real sword feels more clumsy in my hand than the practice swords. But when i tried low action techniques like Zornhau, Krumphau for example, they felt the same, i just let it flow
The explanations were good, and the fencing was very fun to watch. I found the mark on the hits to be inconsistent, some hits looked simultaneous, or sometimes the second hit would have the mark, it didn't seem to be consistent between kendo or normal Hema rules. I think most of the hits would be counted as double hits in Hema rules, and I'm not sure kendo rules can fully apply. Overall great video though both fencers have good spirit and demonstrated skill.

@@user-gq5hb6co2y Why is this a reply to a comment I made over a year ago? This is totally irrelevant, and I don't see how John Clements has any claim or standing on this situation, he is basically an outcast and laughingstock of the HEMA community in general. If you google his name you get endless information on who he is, what he did, and why he is not respected within the larger HEMA community.
Wow! It looks like that hits to the waste hurt! I would like to see such a fight with both steel swords. That would be a better comparison between the fighters. The Kendoka should be an bit slower, but would gain more momentum. What I dont like and what I have seen sometimes with other Kendoka (AND HEMAists, too!) is that they do that waste strike but get hit at the head. Its a bad trade.
As someone who primarily does HEMA but also dabbles in kendo, this was an awesome episode. Loved those shinai zwerchs at the end too. Also, I'd absolutely love to see Naoki Eiga vs. Martin Fabian heh.
@@Kendo_is_fun Didn't even realize he's over 50 already, he looks so much younger lol. But I don't think his age would really hinder him that much, and Fabian is nearing 40 too I think.
