Kobe Bryant and Kendrick Lamar have both reached the mountaintop in their respective fields, so you'd be wise to listen up when they share how they arrived there.
Complex News' Jinx sat down with Kobe and Kendrick at ComplexCon to get their take on what people miss when it comes to truly achieving greatness.
"I think there's a certain stubbornness that comes along with being great," Kobe said. "I think people see greatness as kind of an easy road, like a one-path thing. You work hard, and then all of a sudden it happens. It don't work like that. There's a lot of darkness that comes from that as well. There's a lot of personal experiences that you go through that you use as fuel to propel you forward. Whereas otherwise it would just be obstacles for others; it might even prevent them from going forward. Whereas for us, those moments do nothing but fuel us even more."
Kendrick offered similar sentiment on the topic. "It's the curiosity of it. The fear, the anxiety. It's the curiosity of knowing, damn, I can possibly overcome this. And when you do and another one approaches, I wanna challenge that too. That's real greatness."
Check out the full interview above, where Kobe and Kendrick share when they knew they were on to something special in their careers, why Kobe believes he's failed if 20 years from now basketball is the best thing he's done in his life, and how Kendrick got inspired watching Kobe's final game.

@@BRBallin1 This is not a well thought out comment from you. Bill Gates is the perfect example of an extremely successful technology pioneer and yet what he's doing in the second chapter of his life is more defining than the first chapter. The man is well on his way to eradicating Polio worldwide and has given $100bn to charity. Another great example Andrew Carnegie à wealthy industrialist who is known for the second chapter of his life than the first. We today enjoy his libraries and halls he built. I can go on, at some point Zuck will step down from FB and also purse this path.

Great to see Kendrick letting Kobe speak first out of respect for his elder, but when Kobe speaks you can see Kendrick thinking, "yup.. spoke on that in DAMN, yup.. fear, love, pride used those as song titles. Between all his albums, Kendrick has turned the mindsets and thoughts of greatness and great people into lyrics and music for every human to hear and dissect.

Kendrick is absolutely right about Kobe last game. I was there, and when he said you really didn't know what was happening, nobody in the building really knew what was happening. I remember the first 13 points, and then I looked up and he had 53. So much energy in the building. It was incredible. Kobe is the GOAT.

I didn't notice this before, but at 6:54 when Kobe starts talking about darkness and past experiences to fuel his drive, Kendrick's head snaps to look at him and agreed with an "exactly". Dealing with childhood trauma and dark vices in order to move forward was the central theme of his next album Mr. Morale and theres a chance this was the genesis of that idea. RIP Kobe

Kaine Shigaraki id say Kendrick is more philosophical but it’s more on else he remains it conspicuous with his music- even with wisdom there’s the things that Kendrick had to push through to form these views (life in compton, seeing people die in front of him, shootings live, his friends dying in his hands, gang violence and friends becoming gang members to then be put in danger)
