Thank you Bill Newberry! I watched your video on washer not spinning and determined it was the clutch not working. I ordered the clutch and the coupler just because and fixed my washer myself. I'm a 52 year old woman. My repairman told me that I needed to buy a new machine and I had to talk my husband into letting me try. My washer is fixed! I'm so excited and proud that I did it with your help! Thanks for all that you do.

Hey Bill, I am not very mechanical and was going to spend $450 for a new washer yesterday. I followed your instructions, took the Kenmore apart, saw the broken coupler spent $24 for a new coupler (now with metal on the inside), put everything back together, and to my surprise, it worked! I did it!!! Thanks you sooooooo much!!!

Not only do you show how to fix the problem, but you do it step by step and in a well lit area... Also you keep a smooth continuity to your explanation and attack of the problem... Great job!

First of all, thanks for the helpful video. Second...do NOT buy ANYTHING but the genuine clutch kit. Those 6 pad rings or clutch kits are more likely to be TRASH than not. I installed a knockoff once. The clutch pads were worn out in a MONTH. We do a LOT of laundry, but that's nuts. I checked with a local appliance parts place...they've never seen a 6 pad ring that is a genuine part. I read the Amazon reviews AFTERWARD and found out that the "3 star rated" 6 pad clutch I bought had entirely either 1 star or 5 star ratings. The 5 star ratings were from people who just installed it (machine works great at first). The 1 star ratings were from people who wrote their review after 4-6 months and the clutch had failed. 6 junk pads are not better than 3 good ones! Shalom!

Bill, You rock! Your videos guided me and my husband through removing the outer case, replacing the coupler, and putting the case back on. All because you explained everything so well. $18 for one updated and stronger part, NO need to call a service tech. Thank you!!!

Our washer stopped spinning; though I could hear a motor. I figured it was old, and it would be at least $200 to have whatever fixed. My hands are full with two little kids, a nursery project we need done yesterday, stuff to fix up in a house we bought last year. It's Labor Day weekend... why not buy a new one? I was all ready to check out, of course buying a matching dryer, stands, pushing my cart well into the thousands. I stopped and thought, "Let's check RU-vid. I should at least do a little troubleshooting." This comes up, and I quickly realized how simple this would be. It was the coupler! Thanks for explaining everything so well, and giving a non-handy dude the confidence to DIY.

I just replaced the coupler, based on your video and I am back to washing clothes. The coupler was cracked, but I couldn't see the crack until I removed the motor from the transmission. $9 later, back in business. Thanks for posting the videos.

Thanks Bill. I just did what you told me. I didn't trust that I could actually pull it off, so I did my laundry this morning for $5.00 at a laudrymat just to make sure I have clothes for work tomorrow. I came home and fixed the washer and it works great. I even replaced the clutch too. Congrats on getting over a million views on this video too. How does it feel to know you helped over a million people! Thanks so much.

My set are 2004 models Atlantis I love them and my washer won’t spin. Never a problem before except replacing that plastic piece you pushed in on top! I’m a woman alone who knows someone that could do this, and I know an online shop that might have what I need. I’ll show the guy this video but he may not need it, only I do! 😊 Well done, Thank you!

Thankyou so much Bill! I am a mum with 3 young kids in Australia. Our ''Made in USA" Whirlpool stopped spinning - the only time anything has gone wrong with it in nearly 15 years of use! I followed your RU-vid clip, found the broken motor coupler; ordered the new part & have just finished fitting it. I am so so HAPPY!! The machine is now working as normal again! Thankyou so much! X

This was SUCH a huge help for my Whirlpool washer. My issue wasn’t the focal point of this video but he did mention it. It was the CORE of the plastic part of the motor coupler. It was stripped, but I could barely tell from looking and testing w my hands. It still gripped the bolt when I turned it by hand, but it felt a little loose on the initial 1/4 inch turn and THEN it would lock in place. But like he said, when the washer really gets spinning, it apparently wouldn’t grip. Once I bought a new piece ($18 for the set of both plastic pieces and rubber piece they go into), it’s spinning perfect again!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! HUGE HELP!!

Bill, thank you I diagnosed & repaired following your step by step instructions. Found motor coupler pieces on floor upon tilting machine ordered part on amazon fixed for $2.96 saved a ton of money thank you Bill. I did remove the cabinet as it was loose and wanted to secure it on properly when doing this there is a water tube in the back make sure that is secured on properly as mine came off accidentally and leaked (my fault). Machine is working like a charm now thank you again BIll

Just when I thought I had to replace my washer, "boy was I wrong! Called my local repair store and based on the details I related he said " Your transmission is bad and needs to be replaced" I believed him assuming he's the technician and has gone through this many times, as he said himself...however, I came across this vid and I was amazed how detailed this was! It was only my coupler, in thirty minutes and $5.00 my washer was back to normal. Great video! Thanks Bill

Thanks for this video (and the Part 2). I have a 15yo Whirlpool washer and I've repaired it three times. First time was the motor coupling. I didn't find a video until after the repair, lol. My machine had been making a "chunky" sound when agitating, is best I could describe it, before it finally quit working all together. I was working off a repair manual and trying to figure things out, and needlessly disconnecting hoses from the pump and flooding my laundry room and subsequently shorting out a CGFI circuit. Then when I put the motor back on, I installed it upside down and the place where I needed to reattach the wires was on the opposite side. Oops. Good times, lol. But I got it working. Next repair was the lid switch. Suuuuuper easy compared to the motor coupling. Then today I replaced the clutch. Couldn't have done it without your videos. This repair would have gone a lot smoother if I didn't also have to replace my valves in the wall of my laundry room, both of which had gone bad, lol. But, everything is back in place and working again, yay.

This video helped me discover what that noise was a couple days ago, why our washing machine doesn’t always drain the water out of the clothes, and how to identify what the circular disc is that I just found. Now I know where it goes, what’s going on., and how to fix it. Thank you 😊

OK. You helped me twice now. First with the agitator dogs to get the agitator working again...( awesome, thank you ) now with the coupler. I did exactly as you did. Piece of cake. The coupler was cracked. $10 part at Sears. One thing I'd like to add though if I may. The white plastic "legged" parts of the coupler, will be snug on the shaft, if its not cracked, or just a leg or two is broken, meaning, the one side thats NOT cracked, is tight on the motor shaft, or tranny shaft. A screw driver will pry them off. I was going to replace both sides of the coupler, since it comes with all new parts. The two "legged" sides, and the rubber bushing that goes between. When you put the new ones on, you will have to tap them all the way on. They slide on alittle of the way, but wont be fully seated, unless you tap them all the way onto the shaft. I used a 1/2 socket, on a 6 inch extension, and tapped it with the ratchet, like a hammer. ( yes, too lazy to get up, walk to the tool chest and dig out a hammer. It pops on fairly easy, but its too hard to get all the way on by hand, without tapping it. I didnt have to take the tranny off the machine to do this job. It was VERY obvious that the coupler was cracked, by using a finger and trying to "bend" it, you'll find the crack. Just took the motor off, and there it is. Whole job took me an hour, INCLUDING the drive to and from Sears before they closed. Thanks again Bill!!! guys like you help poor guys like me get things done. $10 in parts compared to a new $500 washing machine. My wife was in tears saying she'd pay for the new washing machine, when I walked in the door from work, and told me she broke the washing machine. Nothing better then fixing it for $10 bucks, and saving yourself a few hundred. Thanks man!

Thanks Chris, I had a dual problem. First the lid switch went. I bypassed the electrical system on the switch from another RU-vid video Under Washing Machine Lid Bypass and I also had this problem. Great video. I bought a washer from someone for $50 and they knew the darn thing was broken. I gave my old washer to my brother and now this one doesn't spin at times. Just like you say, it does not spin with a larger load and I have to open the lid and hold the lid switch in while giving it a push to get it started. Then it will spin fine. Otherwise it will sound like it's spinning but it isn't actually moving at all. When I try it with the washer empty, it can engage the spin without any manual help. I already replaced the coupler a long time ago, when I got the machine. I was going to buy the clutch but then others had me believing it may not be the clutch and/or it may be the drive as well. But now i'm feeling confident enough that it is indeed the clutch and have just ordered one to install. Thanks a lot for the expertise! Edit: I see the link to Amazon for the clutch is now out of stock. Only one offer for a used clutch for $63!!! lol I already bought mine though from RepairClinic for $40 after taxes and shipping.

Video was very easy to follow. THANK YOU!! Fixed our washer for $18-new coupler and clutch we ordered online. Our spin cycle would occasionally not work. I'd go to get the clothes out and they were still very wet. It sounded like it was spinning but the tub wasn't moving. We couldn't determine for sure which part was faulty by looking at them so we replaced both. A good idea anyway since they both wear out over time. One tip I saw online is called the "hand test" to test the clutch. I put my hand against the sides of the tub after a few seconds into the spin cycle and tried to stop the tub with my hand. I could stop it using moderate pressure before the repair but now the spin cycle is extremely strong and unstoppable with my hand. I would caution if you take the washer case off, keep an eye on the little plastic hose that attaches under the knob control console. It is behind the load size knob and runs down into the back of the washer. It's called the vacuum hose. I think we tried to lift the knob console up too far and we pulled the hose off where it attaches in the back of the washer. We had flooding with the first load. . I put a newspaper under the washer to find where the water was coming from then found the loose hose with a flashlight & wedged my hand in the back of the machine to reattach it. Hope this description helps someone else. Great job on the video!!

Thank you. There are lots of videos showing how to replace parts of the washer, but yours is the first I found that actually shows how to tell if a part is bad, because sometimes it isn't obvious. It appears I had a simultaneous failure of the coupling between the motor and the transmission (rounded out on the transmission side) and the inside parts of the agitator. I didn't find a video on your site about the agitator, but it was obviously broken (retainer ring for dog ears is loose and the dog ears were just rattling around). Thanks again!

Thank you for sharing the video, this helped me fix the problem with my washer. The actual problem is not with the motor coupler or the clutch. So while I was checking the motor coupler, it was not rotating when the pump was connected, I luckily happen to notice this. In your video, you spin the coupler when the pump was attached. So I disconnected the pump and tried to rotate the coupler and it rotated freely. Then I disconnected the pump from the motor and from the two black pipes. I inspected the inside of the pump and there was a child's sock stuck in there. Now, I have no idea how it managed to get in there but I used plyers to pull it out. I immediately knew that was the problem. I connected everything back together and the washer started to work just fine. Once again, thank you for spending the time to share such videos, you saved a few hundred bucks for me and I am sure for countless others. I hope my comment helps a few home owners fix their washers. I was about to order the clutch, which wouldn’t have solved the problem, which would have made me purchase a new washer and dump my current one. That would have been such a waste.

Awesome video Bill. I can't go over how informative and precise your videos are. My wife woke me up at 7am Sunday morning telling me there is a problem with the machine. Well, ya know what it's like when one of the Mrs.' things aren't working. I knew nothing about appliances, I watched your video and found a broken motor coupler. Awesome, thanks.

Thanks for the video Bill. Had never attempted washing machine repair. Pulled it apart Saturday based on watching your vid; drive coupling was in good shape so pulled the motor out, clutch was toast. Ordered new one on Amazon for $20 (got the whole clutch assembly, lots of grease in bottom of old one so just replaced it and the semi-melted plastic brake). Got it tonight, reassembled, everything working well now. Thanks Bill!

Bill, you're the man. You have a great knack for conveying information concisely and accurately. I'd never opened up a washing machine before, but with your video I was able to swap out my motor coupler no problem. The unit I had was all plastic, but the replacements have a metal insert in the middle to increase durability. Thank you again for your help sir.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video! Saved a lot of time/guessing/research. I had to replace the coupler. One tip I got from my local parts guy on installing that piece is to ensure both the motor and transmission shafts are inserted into the coupler at the proper depth (flush with the hole in the plastic parts), which can be accomplished by using a screwdriver handle inserted into the plastic coupler between the teeth and driving the plastic part onto each shaft, then matching up the holes and teeth.

Bill, a million thanks for your videos, you are a saint! Visiting my folks over the holiday weekend and was able to replace a faulty clutch on my mom's 4 yo Whirlpool! Total cost for parts was $37.00, and about an hour of work, including driving to parts store! THANKS and a Happy New Year to you and yours!!!!

Thanks for the video. Your detailed explanation including the hints and tricks were great. This enabled me to diagnose a bad clutch and replace it myself, saving me repair costs. I just wish at the end you would have done the full reassembly including the electrical connections for completeness.

Super thankful for your time and videos. Tried the coupler first (per your video) and no success. Clutch was next and I'm not too certain I'd have figured it out without your work and assistance. Of course, I had the square nut inside the agitator - ugh - and was able to get that out with a wood clamp I had. Again...much thanks and all the best!

Such helpful videos, thank you. The above video Part 1, 2, How to Troubleshoot and Cabinet Removal were extremely helpful. Thank you for producing clear, precise and understandable videos. My husband and I were able to watch, pause and perform each step perfectly, steps and parts were exactly where you showed them. $34 and a little drive later my washer was up and running like new. I had not realized how much my washer's spinning cycle had weakened until the clutch was replace, what a huge difference. It could be just my imagination but I think that it even agitates better. THANK YOU :)

Thanks Bill for sharing this video. I have a Kenmore Heavy Duty 110 and it won't spin. I have found plastic and rubber shavings around the motor coupler although the video doesn't show how you removed the coupler I'm sure it's rather simple. Total cost to fix 18$ with shipping.

Thanks Bill, your video helped me figure out what was wrong with my washer. FYI, my problem was with the plastic pin that extends into the lid switch wasn’t going far enough into the switch.. replaced the rubber washer with a thinner one. 😁

Thanks, Bill. Very informative and I did it right the first time. Not hard at all. However, the coupler's don't appear to be rounded, although the teeth inside look warn so I'm going to purchase the replacement kit. I'm also going to replace the clutch ring, spring and pads (which is also a kit), and put it back together and see what happens. Wish me luck!

Thanks for this great video! I followed it, but discovered a different problem; my wife's panties got stuck somehow in the water pump. This caused the motor to not move at all. I got them out and it runs perfectly. No need for new parts and I got a good look inside to make sure they are look fine. Thanks again!

Bill, thank you SO much for sharing these videos! The Repair Clinic videos were helpful but your video went in to more detail and gave us the information we needed to check the motor coupler before driving an hour for what possibly might be the incorrect part. So appreciated! God bless.

Bill, thanks for the video. My washer will not spin-dry, pops/clicks/grinds. Sounds like the motor/plastic used in the toy X-wing Fighter back in the 80s.
