Not a Democrat and certainly not a Roman papist, but I still have tremendous respect for Mrs. Kennedy. One of our greatest citizens.

Rose Kennedy died in 1995 at the age of 104 which means she was 76 when this interview took place in 1967. She looks much younger than 76 in this interview.

Being from Ireland I think she is the epitome characterisation of the rich Irish mother. We had a few in our neighbourhood and we would play with their children. It was always hard to figure them (the mothers) out. Sometimes friendly and approachable and other times you daren't go near them. They always put their children under a lot of pressure at school / sport etc but I think their homes lacked the emotional warmth of more middle class or lower income households.

Rosemary had a traumatic birth. She was held in the birth canal during labor, for quite a long time. The nurse had to wait for the doctor to show up to deliver her.

IMO she was simply autistic. Because she excelled so well in one area (math). My uncle Dave is autistic (born 1960) and back then they just labeled them all retarded. But, he accelerated at spelling. One subject. He too was high functioning.

@CKing-388 it still doesn't excuse the way her mother and father treated her. 1982, I was assigned Rose, Joe, and Rosemary Kennedy as a research project. It took 3 months, but I discovered Rose Kennedy lied about not knowing about the lobotomy. My sister had Downs Syndrome and I believe that's why I was given that assignment. Just hearing this woman's voice infuriates me. SHE WAS NEVER A MOTHER TO ANY OF HER CHILDREN. Joe, Jr, JFK, and Kathleen raised the other children while Rose went out on the town and Joe Sr was trying to get into politics. She's lying here. Most children born with disabilities were taken from their mothers and MURDERED. My sister was almost murdered. The OB that delivered her told Mom to leave the hospital and forget about her. Oh, Dad and Mom left the hospital alright. They packed up at 2am, walked to the nursery and saw the nurse sleeping in a chair. They stole my sister and came home. She lived 53 years and gave us so much joy! RIP my sister. 9/7/1970-2/28/2024 Edit: I received a 100 for content and a 100 for grammar.

@@roxannemoser yes, she was definitely lying here when she didn't even mention the lobotomy and that Rosemary was permanently institutionalized at age 23 because of it. It's true she went to a couple of boarding schools as a teenager but she didn't last long at any. Hooray for your parents for taking their child home and loving her! Children with disabilities have loads of potential and brighten the world besides! I am sorry for your recent loss. My brother had Aspergers and other emotional issues, passed away 7 years ago after a long struggle with drug abuse. He was my best friend and I am so thankful we had him.
