Yesterday I gave my 4 year old Nephews a bag of Kenner SW figs that were mine & their Dad's 40 years ago. It was magical to see them playing with them on the carpet, asking their names, and setting them up... Timeless.

The ROTJ figures are indeed amazing, the Jabba's playset was probably my favourite, setting that up with all his goons, with the Rancor - just superb. Boushh is probably my favourite figure of the whole line, her scene in the movie just so cool and I love re-enacting that! The red Emperors Guard and the Emperor himself - also great figures to set up and re-enact the scenes. Biker Scouts and Leia Poncho, speeder bikes... so awesome! Just perfect. ESB is my favourite movie, and my favourite ephemera to collect, just because I have the fondest memories of it, but I totally agree I think Jedi had the best figures overall. Great collection you have there!

In New Zealand there is a toy fair twice a year and one of them is coming up in 13 days! Last year I got an original Chewbacca and I saw someone selling 1980s Indiana Jones and Star Wars comics for 10 bucks each

Kenner was on a learning curve for sure. I'm still collecting the ROTJ line, and the day before yesterday, I finally got the TIE Interceptor. I was so suprised to see the improvment in the wing design (solid piece instead of those plugs with the breakable tabs) that I had to quickly find the date stamp and make sure it wasn't a 1990s' one!
@GQJedi

I have to agree with you on this. I was 6 when Jedi came out so I connected with Jedi toys the most.

The first ROTJ toy I got was Squid Head- before the movie was released. I was blown away by the detail, soft goods, belt and even how well he held his gun! I remember thinking "wow, I can't wait to see what pivotal role Squid Head plays in the story" 😂 Seriously though, I do think the ROTJ figures were the peak in terms of design and sculpt. It's a tie for my affection between them and the ESB line. I did love those Hoth battles (a friend even had an AT-AT!) and LOVED Boba and the bounty hunters, Bespin Han and "Safari suit" Luke!

Another great video from the GQ..Great collection my friend and some rare beasts in tere like the kenner awing and potf scout nice fetts to. My favourite is empire for the same reason as you they were the first sw toys I got around 81/82. I still have a few photos my mam took of me playing with my at at age 9 . Ironically I prefer the endor rotj at at box to the empire box but I just loved empire I think it was the battle scenes seeing the at at for the first time then seeing it under the xmas tree and the snowspeeder in empire is my favourite ship so I never looked back . But rotj is class as is a new hope . Tere all great and we will never see the likes of it again . Kenner was a unbelievable toy company nothing can touch it to this day . Cheers

Another great vid GQ, thank you. I was 8 when Jedi came out in the theaters and so was at my prime for Star Wars toys. I remember getting the Scout Walker for Christmas (85) and was over the moon. As a kid, that was the largest vehicle I was lucky enough to get. Still cherish it to this day. But the toy line from Jedi would have to be my (over all) favorite too. Some great sculpts (Boushh being one of them in my opinion!).
@GQJedi
@GQJedi Год назад
Boushh is a favorite of mine as well. The removable helmet is a great feature on this figure and the other figures in the line. The "soft goods" on some of them like Jedi Luke really seal the deal for me!

I agree GQ. The ROTJ line gets a bad rap for being 'figures with sticks'...but look what we got...Jabba Playset, Speeder Bike, Imperial Shuttle, Rancor, A-wing, B-wing and Y-wing, Skiff, TIE Interceptor and Ewok Village to name a few...it was a great line!
@GQJedi

I think the entirety of the original Kenner SW toy line is great. By the time they got to ROTJ the toys made to represent the characters and ships we saw on screen had become extremely detailed and in many cases quite screen accurate. But for me, I have to say that I really just love the New Hope/Star Wars figures and ships. The likeness to their on screen counterparts is vague at best on many. But I just love the simplicity that the line started out with. And some of the figures originally released in the first 12 NEVER got any kind of update later on. Chewie, Stormtrooper, Vader, Obiwan. They never had alternate versions and were all main characters. I just love how those still blended with every incarnation of the various characters after that.
@GQJedi
@GQJedi Год назад
I feel that, Brent! You brought up some good points there. The OG line iterations don't look much like their onscreen counterparts yet...they still are amazing! Gotta love the og Kenner line.

I don't think I could pick, as I have major nostalgia for all of the lines. My older brother was in kindergarten when Star Wars came out, and I was three years old. My dad brought my brother home some Star Wars figures and I got Weebles. But, both me and my brother sat and played with the Star Wars figures for hours. The next week, we both hot a figure and kept that pattern up for quite some time, occasionally getting other 3.75" figures from other lines, such as Battlestar Galactica, Buck Roger's, The Dukes of Hazzard and The Lone Ranger. But all we really wanted were Star Wars figures. Then The Empire Strikes Back figures hit and it was like we were in heaven at the Toys R Us. My first picks were The Snowtrooper and Lobot. My brother got Lando and IG-88, and by this time, my little brother was getting them as well. He got Han Solo Hoth outfit and Bespin Security Guard. By the time the Return of the Jedi line hit retail, my parents had separated and we moved to a small town in Oklahoma with our mom. The toy isle wasn't quite the same in the small town and many figures were extremely hard to find. One day in the summer of 1984, my mom came into some money and we went into the big city (Tulsa). We went to Target and she let me pick out 15 figures. They had many that I had never seen, Han in Trench Coat, Luke Jedi, Boushh Leia, Lando Skiff Guard, Leia in Poncho, as well as several older figures that were hard to find in my small home town, such as Jawa and Walrusman. On top of picking the 15, my mom picked up the Rebo band and said, "do you want this?" And added it to my pile. I still consider that to be one of the happiest days of my life. Power of the force came out and there were several that I never saw in the store Those were Luke Stormtrooper, Han Carbonite, EV-9D9, and R2-D2 with pop-up Lightsaber (I didn't even know Yak Face existed at that time). By 1987, I had moved back to Washington to live with my dad. I was 12 and there was a large mall with a Kay-Bee toys. They had tons of Power of the Force figures for a dollar each. Pretty much all of them except the ones listed above. By late 1988, several characters were sold out but what they had left were 50 cents, buy one get one free and they had bins full of A-Wing Pilots, B-Wing Pilots Ewoks, Barada, just about all of Jabba's goons. I bought tons and should have bought tons more. They probably had 200 A-Wing Pilots for 25 cents each. I never stopped buying Star Wars figures. When the weren't available at retail, I was buying from conventions, garage sales, comic shops, vintage toy stores, antique stores and from friends who "outgrew" them. By the early 90's, I was collecting Lily Ledy, Poch/PBP, and Takara, and any other foreign figures I could find. I love them all!

For me, although I loved Star Wars as a child - I still remember Saturday morning cartoons in the late 1970s and the first Star Wars toy commercials, and very much appreciate it's charm - it was Empire that really made me sit up and take notice back in the day. That being said, all the lines brought some nice things to the table, and each has their own charm.

Kenner SW toy line I think is the most epic movie related line since Mego from 70’s , SW was the last line I kept collecting even though I was in my early 20’s I was just still to damn hooked where my younger brother had moved on. Universal Monsters was my first passion and still is ,but I haven’t been collecting anything in long while in that because the newer Universal Monsters it’s not the same like 60’s70’s and 80’s. But my vintage SW collection when it’s finished I’m done collecting except for my 76 King Kong I’m always on the look out for another vintage item there.

Kenner Star Wars is the only thing I collect but I see the appeal of collecting other vintage lines. Vintage has charm whereas modern does not.

Jedi is a fantastic and very toyetic film. My personal favorites are the “next 8” that came after the first 12 figures. Four cantina aliens, R5, Death Star Droid, Power Droid and Luke x-wing. These figures we’re awesome in and of themselves and also declared “more to come.” The line would not stop w the first 12. My pals and I were very excited by the debut of these toys!

I'm a ROTJ guy myself. There's just so much going for it. When it comes to my own collection, I have way more ROTJ stuff. It wasn't a conscious decision, it just happened that way. :) For me, it goes SW and ROTJ. NOTHING wrong with ESB at all, it's the strongest movie of the three, but 'Jedi' is more of a mixed bag. I like that it's a bit more of a classic "pirate" adventure to start with, then you go right back into the Rebels vs. Empire with a cowboys and Indians/Robin Hood tone. When I was a kid first starting watching SW (SW SE 97), I honestly didn't think we as the audience would EVER get to see Luke become a Jedi Knight, thinking it was too big of a goal with such a short amount of time. Figure wise, ROTJ has more of my favorites than the other figure lines. Jedi Luke, Endor Leia, skiff Lando, Gen. Lando, R2 w/ saber, Lumat, Warok, Wicket, AT-ST driver, Nien Nunb, Squidhead, and the man himself, Jabba. :) (I know some of those are POTF) Thanks for the video
