Kenny Garrett is the best. His music has a soulful, almost religious sound to it. Reminiscent of Coltrane.

I can't put words on how masterful Kenny and his group performs these timeless songs. I wish I was there in person. This is as real as jazz gets. John Coltrane is smiling.

1st tune direct impression on me: This a MASS of SURVIVAL, I mean Kenny calling for the auditory's presence and energy, sayin w his hand; "COME ON! GIVE US MORE TO WORK WITH, CELEBRATE YOU ARE STILL HERE! AND WE ARE MANTAINING ART ALIVE as we travel w each note through the past present and future simultaneously"

Some comment on sound and others drums. This is a worship experience. Any one who knows what Coltrane was reaching on would immediately recognize that Kenny is pushing the Spirit Realm in the first song. Although it was Miles who brought Kenny to spotlight, Trane's Legacy is kept alive. A Love Supreme continues

My feelings exactly. There's something transporting about his music, especially live. Had the fortune to see him years ago and am hungry to again. Watching this made me realize he is the spiritual heir of John Coltrane. No one else I've seen infuses their performance with so much meaning and devotion.

Thanks soo much WDR Rockpalast for this great concert. I love Kenny and have seen him play with the great Miles Davis, and followed him ever since. His style unique, recognisable and never ceases to impress and surprise. Interestingly, at this stage in his career he is actually resembling Miles in that he also nurtures, showcases and promotes talent and is a true leader. One note on Rockpalast: I recently rediscovered your historic concert series and at the time ( living in The Netherlands) growling up with and being exposed to great new and old music. I will never forget the Steve Miller concert being broadcasted 😊

The first thing that stands out upon watching this video is the lighting, so visually pleasing. Then the overall sound of the band which sounds so large. Then I’m listening and thinking, “Damn”, the drums sound so good, the tone and then what he’s playing. I never heard Ron Bruner play straight up jazz. He sounds amazing, he’s on fire 🔥 This concert is a great experience. Does anyone know what or who is singing along with the melody? It has such a beautiful haunting effect .

Most of Sounds From The Ancestors showcases Garrett's alto playing, which is marked by an expressiveness and assuredness that we've come to expect from this revered jazz veteran. His tart tone has just a hint of rasp, and he has a knack for doling out screams and wails that lend the music enhanced emotional heft. May 31, 2021 Source: JAZZIZ

Kenny Garrett Honors the Ancestors By Ayana Contreras - Jan. 17, 2022 “My mom listened to Motown, and my father was listening to jazz, so I just heard everything in the house. I never thought about Aretha Franklin as being something separate or Marvin Gaye as being something separate, or John Coltrane being something separate. They were all part of this whole picture,” Garrett said in an October phone conversation with DownBeat. Source: DownBeat
