I am totally obsessed with Kenny Vaughn. He is sublimely talented, serious, funny, and articulate when he plays as well as in interviews. He is a prime example of what can happen when you continually improve on your instrument. There are so many great, great guitar players in this world and Kenny, for me, fulfills all the demands put on a competent instrumentalist. He is my favorite no matter what he's playing.
Yes we'll said...quite the skills and musical imagination....reminds of some sort of 60sish detective J Bond type scenery with a wee bit of surf essence !!!!! Badassery. Let's start a surf band!!! Cmon man, I'm in Ventura!!!!!
I love those ES-125s My grandpa bought me one brand new ES-125TCD in 63 when I was 3.. he knew I was going to be a guitar player. He kept it put away until I was 32 and gave it to me. I’m now 64 and still have it and it’s still new condition.
Kenny is the master of tasty instrumental guitar! Precise but not sterile and with such sweet tone. Always in control and never straining. One of Nashville's finest!
One of the best things in this video is when he finishes his solo and returns to the theme at 6:25, and then he glances up at the audience as if to say, "Well, how'd ya like that?" Someone in the audience then obliges with a heartfelt shriek. 😆
I met Kenny on the trail of a Colorado State Park. I didn’t know who he was, but the fact that he was wearing a cowboy hat, carrying around his neck a Martin D-41, and dressed much as he is here told me he must be somebody. We talked for ten minutes or so and he headed for the parking lot. Not three minutes later, two men emerged from the trees, one carrying an acoustic guitar and the other a pro video camera. They were friendly and greeted me and I said “Hi Marty.” He was genuinely humbled and asked, “You know me?” I said, “Well, I talked to Kenny back there on the trail.” No autographs were gathered, but they both bent down to pet my little dog companion and that’s better than any signature in my book.
The world needs a Kenny Vaughn entire guitar collection rig rundown video. Hopefully we'll see it one day. I keep finding these videos of him playing guitars I didn't know he had.
With Marty, he plugs straight into a black-face Princeton Reverb. Other times: I saw an interview he did where he has two small pedalboards he uses interchangeably. Both have a drive pedal, a compressor, and a delay. I’ll try to dig it out and give you the specifics. EDIT: I just re-read your comment and noticed you were instead interested in all his guitars. I’d love to see that too, though I’ve seen him say his collection is actually pretty small: a few Teles, a couple Strats, and a few other Fenders and hollow bodies.
Wow! So glad this was recorded. So many performances as great as this have been only enjoyed by the folks in attendance at the event...never to be repeated or shared. This was epic!
Ah, an ES 125TC. I had one, a 1966. Super light, super versatile even with one pickup. I regret selling that one, maybe Gibson’s most underrated electric. Kenny really shows it to advantage here.
I own one, 2 pickups though., the axe of my life, very easy to play and yes super lightweight. I love this sweet tone but it can shred as a twanky tele a well ; )
As a Bass I would not be stepping out on a limb to say this. Cuz leaves a ton of room for the Bass and the drums to bloom and quickly reach maturity. From the first measure on. My guys is ol Roy would sit back and enjoy the listen too. Cheers,,,, Y'all
I first became familiar with KV when I watched lucinda Williams on Austin city limits in '90 I think...I know this is silly but it is so nice to see him in just cool attire without the country bling he wears with the superlatives. The costumes are distracting. Don't get me wrong, I love marty and the superlatives but the blingy I could do without...forgive me for complaining...KV is truly a guitar hero
Kenny is an AMAZING guitarist. I mean AMAZING. He has SRV talent. The problem? He never worked on his sex appeal or image. The guy is better than Marty Stuart. And he is a hell of a guitar player.
Dunlop meduims, 88 or 90 I think he said in another interview. He also said he takes a light pick all the time in case he's feeling the paper swooshy sound.
Fantastic performance and I love dog eared P90's, but much prefer Kenny's Tele voicing for this one. The Tele has that requisite twang. The Gibby is a little nasal.
I only partially agree with your criticism, friend, but I am surprised that after so many decades, the guitar strap is still tied to the upper part (called the headstock) instead of the body, that is lower. @@WhiteNacho Me too man! Vaughn is really good with any of them, but I think doing it on a single P90 pickup just highlights how much the tone is gotten from the player. It's the same pickup that came in the Les Pauls' if I'm not mistaken. Only the LPs had 2 of them that could be used in any combination.
