This video is the response to a viewer who requested the info. I was happy to respond. In this video I describe and demonstrate how to connect a keyboard to the Kenwood TS-890S, then how to use the keyboard for CW, FSK, and PSK.
I also demonstrate how to create and save pre-programmed messages for Ham Radio Contesting, DXpeditions, and rag-chewing.

Note that the instructions and demo for FSK and PSK are identical except for the following:
1) Mode Selection will be different (Duh!)
2) FSK (RTTY) Caps only - PSK (Upper and Lower Case letters can be used)

Yes, most will apply to the 990 as the internal s/w is the same. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the 590... 73 de Tom, ND3N

Good demonstration Tom… I’m going to buy a 890 … been looking at vids yours is good, love your voice quite listenable. Shack is just about built and I have an icom 706 from the mid 90s saved for a time such as this. No radio equipment installed / antenna so not giving my call sign just yet. I love my TS-890S, but it’s starting to show its age. Kenwood hasn’t released a new HF rig for the last 5 or 6 years. You might want to take a look at what Yaesu and Icom have on the market…. As always, the final decision is yours and you’ll have a ball with any of them

@@ND3N I like Kenwood… very touchie feelie… icom, I was going to get one until I watched a RU-vid demo and the menus put me off… yaesu hmmm nice yes… I’ll stick to the 890 battle star… btw have a look at Martin Lynch & Son MLS recent vid on the Kenwood…. It’s sex Ha ha ha ha 😁 😵‍💫 🤪 💙 73.

Tom, Thanks for the video. I tried to program the CW message on the 890 using the manual but was getting nowhere. Then I discovered your tutorial and got the job done perfectly and easily. I'll be checking your other videos, too. BTW, I bought the keyboard and dongle and the dummy load as you suggested. I love the keyboard.

Awesome video Tom. I'm getting back into Ham radio after a year. I just paid for a new TS-890S but they aren't in stock until about October 21st. I'm really looking forward to operating that rig!

It is a great rig - my primary station rig (obviously) with a FT-991A as a backup. It is pretty intuitive, but has it's quirks. Be on the lookout for more videos like this... 73 de Tom, ND3N

Excellent tutorial Tom. I just recently got back into hamming and have the Yaesu FT 991A and the Kenwood TS-890S. Currently I have been enjoying the FT 991A but your info on the TS-890S is useful in that it is preparing me to employ the Kenwood in the near future. I thank you for all the great useful information. As a side note, I wonder what or which software you use for your video editing? 73 George KD4FJ

Thanks George - sounds like we have the same rigs. I've been (mostly) a kenwood guy since I got into Ham Radio - my first one was a TS-440S and over the decades, I've had a couple of TS-2000s, a couple of TS-590s, a TS480S, and now the TS-890S - I've also owned ICOM and Yaesu rigs and now have an FT-991B. I use Corel Video Editor Ultimate 2021 (upgraded from 2020 version). It is a lot more than I need, but I'm growing into it.

Nope. I use the built-in tuner. But I do use an external tuner with my FT-991A

I’ll be there as well, but will probably be using Writelog to run my Winkeyer…. I do use my keyboard for rag chewing.

Do you have something on setting the CW sidetone volume? Really want this rig but not if its nightmarish, 9 step menu like 7300 & 705

Easier said than done - when in CW mode, use the monitor function to adjust your sidetone (pages 74, 78, and 80 in the owner's manual)... 73 de Tom, ND3N

I believe it is rated at 3:1, but I’ve seen it tune much worse than 5:1 mismatches. Mostly on 80 meters.

Both are good rigs though the 890 is getting a bit outdated and the FTdx101mp has a much nicer screen. Internally, they use the same technology...@@thomashenderson603

I'm not sure, but I don't believe it can. It can be used with the TS-990. I had a 590 (several, actually), as well as TS-480S and TS-2000, but I don't recall if they would work that way. 73 de Tom, ND3N
