Sardine Fish Curry Recipe is an age old recipe that has been passed on to people from generations This is an easy recipe to prepare authentic and traditional Kerala style sardine fish curry recipe. You can take it as a side dish with Kappa (Tapioca) / hot Kerala rice / Pathiri / Porotta / Appams. Sardine, (popularly known as Mathi, Chaala in Kerala), is one the cheapest, popular and the tastiest fish available in South India.
In earlier times, this curry was cooked in an earthen pot and that tradition is still going on.
The taste that the simple cooking of an earthen pot renders is so village-like and gives that authentic feel, bringing back the memories of a country kitchen. You can make the fish curry in a kadai as well, if you do not own an earthen pot to cook in. You can boil, reheat and use the recipe for 2 days. Enjoy !!
Ingredients :
6 Sardines (Gutted and rinsed well. Marinate it with turmeric and little salt)
1 medium sized onion roughly chopped
15 to 20 cloves of garlic
2 inch ginger roughly chopped
20 to 25 shallots
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 heaped tbsp of red chilli powder
1 heaped tbsp of coriander powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp pepper powder
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
100 ml of coconut oil (or less as per your requirement)
½ tsp mustard seeds (for seasoning)
Few curry leaves
2 whole green chillies
1 piece fish tamarind (Kudampu11li or Malabar tamarind) You can get it in any Kerala stores all over India
1 tsp salt (or as per taste)
