Kerry Blue Terriers are originally from Ireland, and unsurprisingly, they are their national dog as well.
The history behind why Kerry Blues are their national dog is quite fascinating. Micheal Collins was an Irish nationalist leader who owned a Kerry Blue whose name was Convict 224. Due to this, he pushed for this breed to be hailed as the national dog of Ireland.
The Dublin Irish Blue Terrier Club was then established in 1920. Their first show happened outside curfew hours. It was attended by those in favor and in opposition of the Irish Republic. It became so successful that it resulted in the creation of the Irish Kennel Club, and the first breed to be registered was the Kerry Blues.
Kerry Blues have a well-balanced build. Their head is quite long, but it's proportionate with the other parts of their body. They also have long and muscular legs with sturdy feet. Overall, this is a healthy breed. One of the reasons why Kerry Blues are named as such is because their coat has a blue hue when they are younger. It will eventually turn dark and black as they age. But that's not the only thing that makes their coats show-stopping.
The other reason is that their medium-length coats are naturally wavy and soft without undercoats.
