I have It right now: headache, mind fog and sleepiness. I've been transitioning for the past 2 months, when I was eating 32g If NC/day I was fine but now at 25g Im not feeling well. What should I do? Go back to 32g for some more time? ( I eat about 110 g of fat and 95 g of protein per day and exercise 2 or 3 times a week). I'm overweight : 93 kg / 1,67 m. 47 years. Thank you. ✨🙏✨

Thank you for this explanation! I started 3 months ago attempting a keto diet. I'm 66, diagnosed with pre-diabetes, high cholesterol and a fatty liver (no wonder), so I knew I had to go very slowly. First I cut all pasta, carbs, cookies, ice cream, pastries and bread, I used to bake my own, and I only left one slice of oatmeal nut bread here and there. Immediate results: I started dropping pounds and my digestive system quieted down. During the second week my blood sugar dropped from 124 to as low as 85, but while I looked for recipes and not exactly knowing what starchy vegetables or high sugar fruits are, I was inadvertently eating some of those. My blood sugar count went back to over 100 in the morning, steady between 103 and 110. Now I know it's called the "dawn" effect. So fine, it would take longer. I went farther and cut oats, quinoa, legumes and beans and kept experimenting and eliminating foods. I did not go, and will not go at least for now, on full fat dairy and I'm not using butter only some cheeses like parmesan and manchego. My fat comes from salmon and tuna, skinless chicken breast, pasture raised 95% fat ground beef, uncured bacon, extra virgin olive oil, eggs, avocados and nuts. I don't have a gallbladder so I'm afraid of not being able to digest too much fat, so I am taking bile salts. It wasn't until maybe 2 months into the new diet, which is probably not keto but low carb medium fat =), that I felt kind of sick. I don't know if I reached anything resembling ketosis, but for the first time I felt very tired and my energy levels dropped to the floor. A few days and a couple of dark chocolate bars later, I felt better and was able to walk and bike longer so I continued cutting more carbs and cranking up on electrolytes. Yet a few more weeks went by and I felt it again! Eating the same very low carb foods, maybe more fiber: creamed spinach, kale, bok choi, braised cabbage with bacon, cauliflower, zucchini, asparagus, cucumber salads, all organic. My dessert is cottage cheese or yogurt with berries and nuts, chia seeds pudding and I only use monk fruit occasionally. The last day or two I've been feeling a bit tired and I even had some cramps but nothing out of the ordinary. So far, I've reached zero hunger between my two meals, intermittent fasting (16-8) works beautifully for me, the cravings stopped, I'm 20 lbs lighter and regained muscle strength so I'm not going to stop, see what happens. Wish me luck!

I have gone in and out of ketosis for the past 15 years and have never had keto flu. To be honest, the worst feeling on keto is when you cheat and have a bolus of carbs, 5 minutes later your body starts to tingle and you get tired.
@drekberg
@drekberg 5 лет назад
That is great that you never had the keto flu. Your body is smart and telling you not to eat the carbs. Thank you for sharing.
@rumbecker5085

The reason my be that I have always been heavy on salt and veggies. Unfortunately being italian, I was also heavy on pasta and could eat 5 servings in one sitting. Now I only eat pasta and bread once or twice a year and have been doing keto constantly for the past 5 years (besides a couple cheat days a year). I make an eggplant parmigiana once a week which is like a low carb lasagna, once you know how to cook keto it's so easy to eat healthy.

@@drekberg This is insulin toxicity! Sugar is very toxic and is so processed into highly concentrated crystal. It creates toxic levels of insulin produced by the body to lower toxic levels of blood sugar. Bread flour is not even real food being so processed from wheat where most of the fiber is thrown away. What is left is pure junk food...no different than pure sugar and the body metabolizes it the same exact way!! Our bodies were never ever designed to produce so much insulin to keep toxic levels of blood sugar down. This all changed in the modern century western diet.

I just got through the keto flu for 4 days and it was terrible at first but powered through it. I was irritable, dizzy and felt hyperglycemic. It was confusing because I felt great after being on the diet for the 4th week.I replenished my minerals and salts by drinking chicken bone broth with pink Himalayan salts, increased my fat intake by adding MCT oils and coconut butter with my matcha, slept a couple more hours a night and drank apple cider vinegar between meals. Now I feel great. Be careful because the keto flu can come out of nowhere if not careful.

I've been watching your videos as well as Dr Berg and have been eating into the ketogenic lifestyle for about 3 to 4 weeks now. I currently do 1 to 2 meals a day either 23:1 or 20:4 and have lost 20 pounds. I feel great and have more energy. Not hungry as frequent either. Its such a great feeling and thank you for the inspiration and information. See you on the next one Sten!

The foundation to both doctors is lowering insulin and raising healthy fat along with tons of low glycemic vegetables, salad and salad dressing (preferably olive or avocado oil based). That formula is the key to success to lower hunger and eat less. Much more nutritionally dense! Keep up the great work! I am almost at my goal weight after 20 years, after I only learned of this in the last 8 months! Amazing what science has learned more recently with insulin and how much it affected obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

I've noticed ... seems like EVERY time my body shifts into ketosis [and keto stix at 4.0] I get a headache. AND... a couple grains of pink Himalyan salt on my tongue and a big glass of water ZAPS that headache immediately.

I had two nasty keto flus in the last week and a half lol I’m about three weeks into my keto diet. I used to have around 500 grams carbs day. I went to basically 5 to 10 g of carbs in the matter of a day or two, and then I felt like I was sick. I looked around on the comment sections and found out this was called a keto flu and so got me some zero sugar, zero carb electrolytes starting with that today. The good news is I lost 15 pounds in the last three weeks on my one meal a day keto diet and it’s been amazing. I feel great some days almost like I’m half my age so I’m looking forward to doing this properly and making it a lifestyle change. Thanks Dr. Ekberg great videos been so informative. I’m now a health champion!! Side note: I purchased Ultimate Electrolyte mix cause it has zero carbs and sugar and is made from Citric Acid. This seems to be helping till I bring in more fat.

Dr. Ekberg, just found your channel. Great simple and factual information on Keto. I started keto on 9/1/18 and have lost 25 lbs. I am 72. Started losing my hair for about one month and have lost half of my hair and it’s still coming out in bunches daily. I feel terrific like never in my life and don’t want to stop keto for health and wellness benefits I have experienced. But I am about to flip out because of the hair loss. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. By the way my husband is Scandinavian, from Sarpsborg Norway. He will definitely want to watch.

I love your use of the white board with clear printing to explain your topics. Just like Dr. Berg's videos, it makes the presentation so much easier to understand. I got the Keto Flu the first couple weeks, but I jumped into the deep end of the pool for the first time and did a 3 day water fast to switch quickly. I felt horrible with every symptom and severe leg and foot cramping and headaches. At that time I knew nothing about replacing electrolytes. I repeated the fast a couple weeks later and did a 4 day water fast feeling less symptoms. Then I learned about electrolyte replacement. I use potassium chloride powder (NOW INC. makes a good one) pink sea salt, magnesium citrate or malate and occasional baking soda in filtered water with lemon juice and cayenne pepper powder. I also use sparkle water for the fizziness and change. The symptoms have completely disappeared. I'm currently on day 4 of a 5 day water fast with no hunger. I know I am now fully body fat adapted. When I do eat, I usually do 18 hours of fasting and 6 hours of eating every day with one or two decent size keto meals in that 6 hour window until I am satisfied. I use the cheap keto pee strips and it shows next to the darkest purple after a day and a half of fasting. I never bought an expensive keto blood meter because I know when I am burning fat with the pee strips and the fact I have energy and no cravings tells me that my cells likes my body fat as a meal. I believe I am only 5 pounds from my ideal body weight.

That was great information about keto fluid. I ha had that early 2021 during OMAD fasting for the first time. What happened was that i was feeling dizzy especially in the afternoon. I remember during the time i was driving my car and stopped at traffic lights i couldn't feel that the cars were next to me were morning, then i asked my partner if he is feeling the same thing, then he answered me that No you are running out of sugar because of fasting he said. Infant it was dangerous. At certain points i was terribly feeling dizzy and remember sitting down immediately. I couldn't understand why ? I am now thankful to your message which helps me understand everything. Thanks very much again. Rosemary from Belgium.

I went through it after doing my very first 24 hour fast last night, (worked to this gradually, been on low carb for 10 years with plenty of high quality mineral supplements, worked to keto/no carb over 10 days doing 2 meals 6/18 and increased healthy fat) went to 24-25 hours fast with very little hunger, went to weekly acupuncture, and broke the fast with your chocolate smoothie,(added MCT oil and cinnamon, couldn't find coconut cream) went to bed, and woke up at 4am with horrendous nausea and a massive coughing fit (I have emphysema) . Drank plain ginger tea, stopped the nausea right away, but couldn't sleep anymore. Been drinking San Pellegrino water, it has 10mg sodium in it. Feel really tired today.

Thank you so much Dr Ekberg for all you do! You really connect the dots so well in your presentations!! Must keep driving in the message of how powerful processed food is junk food and how significant it effects the body with insulin toxicity. Please keep that good work up and I think if you use that as the common denominator in all your videos, it will continue to be a game changer. Most of the world cannot relate to how in the world flour and processed foods are junk foods. Maybe do a video that is focused on the power of processed food? I heard that processed food disease be may renamed Diabetes type 3! Thoughts?

I switched to keto quickly after a diet of pasta, vegetables, oatmeal (steel-rolled), and meats. For the first few days I had a little bit of carbs (I was debating whether to throw my old foods away like bagels) and then only keto-approved foods. I wanted intermittent fasting too. I didn't get any keto flu in my experience and I started with 2MAD (now I do both 0MAD and 2MAD). I guess I was in the advanced beginner phase since I already cut down on sugar and I ate vegetables. Although I didn't get the flu, I felt better as time went on and after two weeks of keto, I felt my body adjusted completely.

Great video! I started the transition (+ Intermittent Fasting) about more than a month ago and for the most part it has been great (improved cognitive function, increased energy, better mood). Only things were that my sleep has been interrupted with frequent bathroom trips (even during the day) + constipation, I'm guessing that is due to the nutrient deficiency aka more vegetables? Also I do go a little overboard on the desserts despite arguing that it's "keto friendly" lol (berries + whipped cream/peanut butter + cacao and sometimes banana). My goal for this is to improve my health, primarily cognitive function (increase in stem cell, hgh, bdnf, etc...) as I'm fairly happy with my weight. Let me know your thoughts

I started to have itching spells. First I thought it was bug bite or poison ivy. Then, it was where my pants fitting tight and rubbing my skin, the base of my legs. By the time I went to bed last night, the itching had spread all over, head to toe, red and swollen where I scratched. I could not sleep. I was constantly scratching one spot after another. Then it occurred to me that antihistamine may work because it felt and looked much like allergy reactions. Thank goodness, it worked. But I had no idea what caused it. Only possible cause I could think was the keto diet I started gradually a couple month ago. I noticed that my stool started to change into harder and pellet like form, one step away from constipation, which I understood as a result of cutting down brown rice. I was eating brown rice to keep my gut microbes happy. But, itching? So, I looked up “keto flu”. There it was, itching was one of the symptoms listed along with constipation. Why not my gut microbes be happy with keto verges? Why allergy like symptoms? Does anyone know the answers?

While exercise is good, excess exercise is destructive. If you have fatty liver chances are there is a degree of degeneration in the body, in which case it would probably be healthier to exercise more gently. Look at some of my videos on exercise. I was so cold and shivering the first 3days. That was it. Then on day 4 I felt awesome! I'm all or nothing, all at once. I love to suffer some! 😂 But I am used to ordinary 6days fasting since 10years back. And did intermittent fasting 1year before I started mt Keto journey. So I guess that helped me go through it easier. Just realised the other day that I need to add more fat to my food!

If I’d only found this months ago. I went all-in with nearly no carbs to kick start the process. My keto flu started on day 3 with a cramping and quivering to my left calf. I kept it from going onto a full on sustained cramp that would’ve sent me to the hospital…I was driving. Now I think I can go back. Perhaps, as structure is concerned, it would be wise to start Atkins at stage 4 and work my way backwards. I’d welcome any opinions on the idea.

Hey Doc can you make a video on TMAO. Is it safe to eat moderate meat and eggs daily on keto.

Why not? I do and have been for years eating keto. Good source of protein and fat. Grass fed free range organic is the best if you can afford it.

What I don't understand though, is that in 6 weeks of keto and fasting, I lost 6kg (from 82kg I am now at 76Kg) - so my body lost the fat. I assume it lost it by burning it or am I missing something? Twice in the last two weeks, where I fasted for two days and the following day I ate one meal, where I've experienced a wave of dizzines and cold, like a shock over my body. I still can't find what exactly is happening to me. I now started taking electrolytes regularly but after the second time which lasted for two days, I decided to eat some food (avocados, yoghurt and peanuts). I feel a little better but I still feel that light dizziness/imbalance.

Wondering 1 thing, can your keto's get too high when you go too fast and "starve" yourself? Had the keto flue, worked on my gut bacteria and already feel much better but keto in blood stays around the 6 - 7 mmol/L. Even 7.9 just an hour ago. I'm at 4 weeks now and it totaly sounds like me..... giving 500% because I believe I can pull it off.

I haven't heard of it going that high. Usually it stays below 5 as long as you have some insulin. It can go a lot higher in type 1 diabetics because they have no insulin at all.

well that's the thing, I don't have diabetes, not even type 2. Probably was close to it but my sugar levels are steady as a rock now. Even when I make a mistake it shortly rises and gets back within half an hour as if nothing ever happened. Should I get woried right now?

Hi I have a long standing insulin resistance over 40 years and on metformin & insulin since long. Now I am 15 days on keto diet. I left my insulin & metformin. Through out I had a roller coaster feeling. Sometimes a night mare. But I struggled to push on. I had a week long severe muscle cramps which are now settled. But now the main problem is palpitations, a bit high BP and mainly mentation problems & imbalance & vertigo. It seems that I am at the tipping point. . Now: 1. Should I continue? 2. Should I add metformin or small doses of insulin? My blood sugar levels remain around 300 units through out. 3. Any harm in continuing with metformin or insulin along with keto diet? I need urgent help and advice please

Take your medication. blood glucose levels that high are dangerous

You are on the way to ketoacidosis. It’s deadly. Get normal blood sugar levels first. Then find a way into ketosis. Use the medication you need to keep blood sugar att the levels it needs to be. When you have that start exercising, slow first (personally I can’t do slow, high intensity I enjoy, but that can be more counter productive than productive) Maybe get a thorough checkup, to why your situation is what it is. Consider continuous blood sugar monitoring. Reduce medication slowly, just to keep blood sugar levels in check.

Also it sounds like you may have diabetes type 1 or about to get it. That what I got + insulin resistance.

In fact the more I think about it, you most likely are miss diagnosed. You have insulin, if you got 300 in blood sugar you need more insulin. Take 5 units of insulin. Check again after 1.5-2 hours. If no change take another 5, if it has increased take more and check 1.5-2 hours. If it has decreased monitor it every hour. If it’s flattening out take a bit more until it flattens out at 160. Then monitor it each hour. Preferably while fasting. Fast working insulin is usually effective 4-6 hours, as most effective around 2h after injection. Slow working insulin is effective up to 24 hours but as best up to 12 hours depending on brands. If what I say here works se a different doctor and get a correct diagnosis. Today they do not only talk about two types of diabetes. But have sub categories under each type.
