I have been vegan for 18 years. I am 69 years old. I take no medications. I have no chronic disease. I have blood work done every year and my doctor sends me home saying I'm the healthiest patient she has. My friends that are in their 50 and 40s or dying of heart disease and cancer. Gary Moore sorry to say but you will not live long , the science says the opposite so I don’t know where you get your science. I personally don’t give a shit about science because it has been very wrong on so many things. I follow my human instincts. Both my husband and I had cardiac calcium score scans. In my case my heart was realitively good. However I was diagnosed with a malignant lung cancer. My luck was the tumour was small and cured with removal of part of my right lung. My husband had his scan 3 weeks ago and has been diagnosed with a large ascending aorta aneurysm. He is now waiting for more tests and probable surgery. I urge everyone to listen to what is being suggested. In both our cases we believed ourselves to be healthy but discovered Severe life threatening diseases. We both now follow a Wholefood plant based diet

Humans figured out supermassive black holes and the age of the universe but still not what they should eat.
@dotology
@dotology 3 года назад
I'm sorry to disappoint you but humans have not figure out black holes yet, it's only a mathematical theory so far, actually theory as valid as plasmoid theory in the electric universe theory so I'm not surprised the 'proper food intake' is also revolving around theories 😄 It is only until anyone actually try for himself and see for real how the theory plays out in the real life.
@mehdibc5852
@mehdibc5852 3 года назад
@@dotology I agree that not everything about black holes is known, but at least, you don't have polar opposite points of view like in nutrition. For every unprocessed food you can find videos saying that food is great and others saying its bad. And that's my point, it's so confusing. You have doctors saying any type of meat will give you cancer. You have others saying carbs are bad for you and will give you diabetes. Some say plants have anti nutrients. But you're right, you need to figure it out yourself.
@dotology

@@mehdibc5852 but doesn't the plasmoid theory bring in the content to polarise the view on black holes? Anyways the food topic is exhausting 😂 I think we should focus on finding and determining our own metabolic mechanisms and adjust our nutrition accordingly. There are almost 8bln of us and everyone has his own unique predisposition. Not to mention (and I think it is still an overlooked factor) that different life styles, geographic areas and also different times of our lives do require different approaches. I've spent years and years researching my body problems and tried different kind of nutrition. For me keto and fasting seams to be the best when it comes to health, energy and look factor. Unfortunately 6 weeks isn't long enough for most people to feel the biggest benefits if you ate a normal diet before. Also every time you cheat and eat carbs 1 time it sets you back to 3 days before you can even begin ketosis again, so you are back at square 1 every time you cheat at all. If you don't have very solid willpower, then true keto is very tough to enjoy the benefits of, which mean it will never work for most. Good luck.

I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique ru-vid.comUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.

Three potential key problems with polyunsaturated fatty acids are 1: when exposed to oxygen they can oxidise to create carcinogenic epoxides at the double bonds; 2: when heated they twist at the double bond, converting them to trans fatty acids - this disables their function by changing their shape; 3: when omega 3 fatty acids are inadequate relative to omega 6 (the ratio in our diets should be roughly 1:2), it interferes with the metabolic pathways to healthy thromboxanes and prostaglandins. As long as these fatty acids are consumed as part of the whole food, rather than extracted as oils for cooking etc, problems 1 and 2 would be largely avoided.

I'm a neuro and have eaten in various ways. I believe *MOST* people can adapt and be healthy on any diet that emphasizes fresh whole foods and meets nutrition requirements. For me personally, I spent years as a raw vegan but had to change due to autoimmune disease. I was getting B-12 and other injections yet still had deficiencies, and 1 of my doctors called raw veganism "a form of self-harm" in patients with my diagnosis. That was a wakeup call, and within 6 months of adding fish oil and a few animal products, the biomarkers for my illness improved over 50%. I still eat largely plant-based, but I'm 1 of those folks who simply cannot absorb all my nutrients from plants. It's hard to understand the fanaticism behind many dieters, especially vegans. Taking fish oil or simply eating oysters occasionally will solve many vegans' nutritional problems, so it seems irrational to tell people not to eat those foods for ideological reasons. If you're not eating oysters bc you believe they're sentient beings that feel pain... that's not exactly true. Yes, they have a nervous system, but it's very simple and certainly doesn't experience pain like we do. I see vegans eating foods cooked with yeast and supplements derived using bacteria and other microorganisms, and as a neuro it's pretty clear to me that their ideology breaks down. If you'd rather not eat mammals on the basis that they're sentient and feel pain like we do, that makes sense, but otherwise you're drawing lines to differentiate among life forms in ways that don't make much sense.

I have a similar situation, where I was strictly vegetarian for a long time, and vegan for awhile, but could not sustain health over the long haul. I "hit the wall" at about year 8. My issue was that I developed an inability to metabolize B-12 no matter what, even with supplementation- because I had stopped producing a vital enzyme. I am still mostly a plant eater, but eat some sort of flesh food approximately once per week. Since doing that, I have been feeling much better.

@Nospam Spamisham Sorry but looking at the animal Kingdom humans have in common with carnivorous or omnivorous animals as much as apes have in common with those animals. Our brain developed eating lots of cooked complex carbohidrates and then we started hunting, otherwise bears or lions would be the most intelligent animals on the planet instead of us. Luckly your body can survive on meat only but that's not sustainable nor healty for most people, so don't spread misinformation.

The reason I'm WFPB vegan and don't include fish is not for ethical reasons - it's to avoid contaminants. 1tbsp ground flax seeds and low omega-6 should be good for omega-3. Some studies also show benefits to add preformed EPA&DHA gathered from the source that fish are getting it from: algae. In pill form of course. It makes sense to me because the biochemistry arguments make sense to me - I don't believe naturalism is the answer to maximizing health life years. Our body is optimized for reproduction and nurturing off-spring only to the point of avoiding extinction. So I count all healthy years above 50 as bonus years. I'm looking for pitfalls of the WFPB and am currently investigating oxalates.

The biggest thing that people do wrong on vegan diets is undereating and not getting in healthy fats and grains. I tried a vegan diet for a few months in college and learned a lot, so when I tried again it was much more sustainable. Legumes, minimally processed grains, and tubers are the central part of my diet, with plenty of fruit and veggies, and I have 2 tablespoons of chia seeds on my oatmeal every morning. I also take a daily B12 and vitamin D supplement, which everyone should do. That works amazingly well for me, and I feel more energetic and healthy than ever. Also, my blood panels are better at 27 than they were in my teens. I would recommend adding more calories in the form of grains and legumes, and trying again. It is very easy to undereat on salads and fruit alone.

My only concern with the whole food plant based is underestimating what I can do at my age. My friends look like they will need walkers, had bypasses, diverticulitis, strokes heart attacks. I am planning 3 week back packing tripss Cycling, building things, I seem to be enjoying the investment I made by initially going low fat in the 80s and going from a beer drinking young adult to riding in 200 mile bike races.

Paul Graham has a great little article called "Keep Your Identity Small" and while it's about Religion and Politics, I think nutrition and diets suffer from the same issue... people attach their identity to what they eat and so then the conversations become much more difficult to objectively have.
@man0utoftime
@man0utoftime 3 года назад
Sounds like an interesting article. It's difficult to not have your identity become linked to a choice when it runs counter to prevailing norms. When I stopped eating meat years ago, I was determined not to let it define me, contrary to the tired joke, "How do you know someone's vegan? They'll tell you within a minute of meeting them. Hurr durr." The reality is that food is a big part of human social life. The easiest way, I ultimately found, to avoid meat being shoved my way or wasted on behalf by family and friends was to say, "No thanks. I'm vegetarian." Otherwise, they think you are turning your nose up at something they made, not hungry, or some other misunderstanding. It sets you apart, whether you intend to make it an integral part of your identity or not.
@FrocketGaming
@FrocketGaming 3 года назад
@@man0utoftime @man out of time Few thoughts around this. You could just as easily say "No thanks" and leave it at that. No need to mention the vegetarian part at all, which I believe would help separate the identity. You shouldn't worry about how others interpret that response because you cannot control how they respond, only they can so it isn't your task or responsibility to worry about. You can simply respond with kindness and good intention, the perception of it is outside your control with anything said to others.

I missed eating fruit, ate a large salad almost every day and got really board with eating so much meat, cheese and cream. Normally I have no problem with my bowls yet I did with keto. I’m vegan now, keeping fat and oil low, the weight is melting off me and no longer have any problem with my bowls. What clinched it for me was seeing how animals are suffering. Diet wars is right. I’m so confused and I’m a really smart person with a science education. It seems like everyone has the scientific evidence that their diet is the best. I stay vegan for ethical reasons so keto just isn’t an option. But what about salt and oil? I see doctors like Fung presenting studies that say salt eaters live longer and oil will keep your insulin down thus aiding weight loss. Then others like Esselstyn say those things will damage your arteries. What to do?
@jeanhannah9809

I love experts but they all have their own niche! That said, the overwhelming scientific evidence points to a plant based diet as the best way forward. It's a very confusing area of study so I'm a fan of the Blue Zones as it's real. In these areas people live very long lives. Their diets are predominantly but not exclusively plant based. (Minimal animal products - 0 to 5%). They use small amounts of plant based oils for cooking and a little salt. Beans are eaten in every BZ area as are whole grains. The emphasis is on fibre rich fruits and vegetables with zero processed food. They also have a low stress, simple lifestyle and spend lots of time out of doors. Makes sense to me.
@minifix
@minifix 3 года назад
It's not confusing, you just have to read the scientific literature. Don't read journalism, or blogs, or posts about nutrition - just the scientific literature. That, along with some critical thinking, will make everything crystal clear. For example: When a population study writes "Vegans have low levels of omega-3" in the title, you think "uh-oh, vegans are malnourished". Then you read the actually study, and the part that says omega-3 levels were at 3,7%, before you begin to ask questions: What are the optimal levels? Who has optimal levels? How do omnivores compare to vegans? Then you read a similar study about omnivores and find that omnivores have levels at 3,5%. And you realize the actual title of the first study should have been "Vegans have slightly higher levels of omega-3 than omnivores". Confusion gone.

For example, antinutrients like phytates, oxylates and lectins. They only want you to eat the fruit in order to spread the seeds. But they don’t want you to chew the seeds or nuts unless, like our ancestors, we process them and let them germinate and sprout first to drop their defences. Doesn’t make sense to me. I grew up in the north. The Inuit lived way longer than 30. The culture lived off berries, meat, and fat for centuries. All cultures did during winter months. I feel keto is a natural state for a period of the year. Carbs and their access was naturally restricted by seasons. I don't think we are naturally meant to eat that many carbs all year long. I also don't think we are meant to eat high amounts of meat proteins and animal fats. Fats and oils were an an easy way to flavour and preserve foods. Lending to a natural ketosis during the winter. I personally find I can stay in keto with a more moderate fat consumption and eat more plant based foods. I also want to see myself transition out of ketosis, a few times a year, into a more Mediterranean style diet of mostly plant based foods with moderate fats, moderate carbs, and low proteins. Exactly ! The "we have science on our side" can be claimed by both sides, so that just doesn't fly any more. The only determining factor as to which side is your allegiance appears to be, on which side and into which lifestyle have you invested your time, your energy, your money, your health, and your reputation.

My husband and I recently became vegans. Very quickly we were both off of our medications. We have tons of energy, did not need to lose weight. Both get to eat more and have maintained the same weight. It is a lot of work thou, I have to shop 3 times a week since we run out of fresh produce. Very hard to socialize because we gave up alcohol too.We look and feel great, but have no friends now. 🤣

I am a senior care person, meaning I see all ages and all meds and hear all the medical speak. All I can say is older than 95 to 105 age groups eat very small plates of real food; balanced with a minimum of sugar or filler snacks. Likewise these older people were the ones that kept active the longest. They all were busy with simple chores and daily routine. Strikingly, the longer one lives has more to do with 3 legs of the survival: 1. low meal count/small portions, 2. regular routines/activity, 3. assertive personality type that demands they get what they need/want.

@@eugeniebreida1583 As a generalization, Yes your visual is correct. But. the vibrancy of their mind, or I would say "spirit" for all things called Life, is remarkable. If Im taking a 104 year old to the doctor, in many cases the doctor gets a lecture if the treatment plan varies from the last 3 doctors of the last 50 years. Think endless desire to live and stay on track. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln: " 8 days to cut down the tree? - Ok I will take 7 days to sharpen the axe and 1 to do the cutting." Its smart living...albeit a pragmatic one.

@abstruk
@abstruk 3 года назад
@@michaelpfuntner8109 Yes, I suppose Your idea of 85 BG is likely a good data point. It follows what I see in those who defy time. But there is some aspect that points to one's desire to live and play with their options to keep going. There was an extensive study started in 1980 for a large census of seniors in Leisure World, located in Orange County CA. It clearly reveals the biggest factor is having "reasons to live" in the context of friends and activities and exercise 20 minutes per day etc. Diet and nutrition or even mild alcohol consumption, just did not count under the longevity data collected for 25 years. But this begs the question of how one's Brain responds with nutritional aspects supporting one's lifestyle and avoiding stress. Avoiding Low grade - long term stress is the key to living longer based on my observations. Centenarians are purpose driven and this includes their eating habits.

Studies showing keto as dangerous are vague. If the study involves people eating less than 40g of carbs, they consider it keto. Eating bad food but technically very low carb and calling it keto is dishonest. Imagine trying to sustain a vegan diet on processed junk that is technically vegan. Huge salads/veggie portions with healthy fat+small portions of protein with more fat=healthy keto. Veganism can work great too if you pay attention to all nutrient needs
@ClayMationNation
@ClayMationNation 2 года назад
@@EthanE3 Well the problem is that Keto is extremely tough to follow and requires a ton of prep time that most people don't have. So aim for the healthiest version of a convenient diet you can find. No processed junk, lot of vegetables. Some protein, some healthy fat and that's it.

Before I started Plant based I had blood work. My triglycerides were 120 my HDL was 65. After 100 days on stick plant based I used Dr. Michael Greger's cook book and Dr. Michael A. Klaper's website for recipes. So after 100 days my tri's climbed up to 156 and my HDL went down to 57. After 90 days on clean Keto my tri's went to 60 (now 43) my HDL went to 91. For me there is no question that Keto is much healthier for me.
