Thanks for watching! Read all about Cyrus Khambatta, PhD and Robby Barbaro MPH here 👉🏼bit.ly/richroll499B
Experts in the science of insulin resistance, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD and Robby Barbaro MPH are Type 1 diabetics who have successfully helped thousands prevent, navigate and reverse diabetes of all kinds through simple changes in diet and lifestyle -- chronicled in their new book, 'Mastering Diabetes'.
Current medical dogma urges diabetics and prediabetics to adopt a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But, is this actually true? Today, Cyrus & Robby put this paradigm to the test, making the case for a high carb, whole food, plant-based diet as optimal.
Enjoy!

As a family doctor in Southern California, this podcast did blow my mind, has changed the way I think about diet for my diabetic patients, and will change the way I practice medicine. As an aside, I found out my wife went to school with Cyrus, and said he was always the nicest guy. Small world.

Someone should teach these things at schools bc I'm insulin resistant and my doc (no more), after normal blood tests, and ct told me I'm fine. No special blood tests. Nothing. I had to find out on RU-vid from docs who treating these things and I started keto month ago but I think gonna change it to this. I really believe it.

I've been Type 2 since 2011. I was told by every doctor to eat meat, dairy and eggs every day because they had very little carb and high fat will slow any carb. My A1c always came back in the high 8's and 9's. On March 4th this year, my A1c came back at 8.3. I had enough of insulin and meds and decided to go vegan. By August, my A1c dropped to 5.9 - prediabetic level, and I did that eatibg veggie burgers and vegan junk food everyday. Now I am WFPB and oil free. I have another test scheduled for December and I'm hoping that will be under 5.6, which will mean it's reversed and I won't have to pay for insulin anymore. Fingers crossed.

Brilliant! Rich, I'm so grateful to you for letting Cyrus explain that process through to completion without interrupting him. I'm the kind of person who wants to know WHY. WHY are you telling me to keep dietary fats low? Oh, okay, now I'm armed with the knowledge and understanding which helps me to embody and live and adopt these recommendations. Just like it helps when people like Dr. Goldhamer and Dr. Barnard explain what constitutes healthy fats versus unhealthy fats. I appreciate it so much that you let these guys nerd out on the scientific studies and the biochemistry explanations. I imagine some listeners/viewers won't have appreciated that as much. @@punker4Real "He is telling everyone the wrong information I know people that actually have diabetic IRL their bIood sugar skyrockets 🚀 to the moon when eating plant sludge.... This is verified with a glucose meter.." Thanks for your reply. I'm a PhD university professor and researcher, and part of what I study and teach about is nutrition--and how people get fooled about it. Notice that you are talking about "plant sludge," by which I assume you mean processed foods, but HE is talking about whole plant foods. Eating WHOLE plant foods (intact grains, legumes, veggies, fruit, some nuts & seeds) is super healthy and ALL large, slim, and almost-totally diabetes-free populations in recent history got the majority or vast majority of their calories from whole food carbs (plant foods). There are no exceptions to that--AND experimental studies prove saturated fat causes insulin resistance, you can cure insulin resistance and get glucose levels under control eating diets that have 70+% of calories from whole food carbs. That means eating natural "carbs" is not the villain--eating too much fat that creates insulin resistance and then eating junk food carbs and excess calories is the villain here. All a glucose meter is telling you is "Yes, I have impaired my body's ability to process whole food carbs normally by FIRST eating too much fat and junk foods." The banana isn't the culprit--those high glucose readings are only a sign you've messed up your system. Diabetes is a multi-step process, and as this video explains in detail, the first step is eating too much fat and getting a build-up of fat inside muscle cells. Start at the 56 minute mark and he very clearly explains that. Of course you can lose weight and get glucose under control by eating lots of meat and animal fat and cutting out the carbs, but you are just dodging the fact your body has been impaired, and ... a) you STILL have insulin resistance and carb intolerance (demonstrated by your inability to rapidly metabolize the glucose in a banana and a couple of slices of bread), b) if you DO eat any significant amount of carbs--a normal human thing to do--the resulting spike in glucose levels damages your endothelium, and c) diets high in meat and animal fat cause more disease in the long run, from heart disease and all its spin-offs to cancers and neurological diseases. What Cyrus is teaching about here is the method of actual curing all facets of diabetes AND eating the diet the provides the best overall long-term health. The research clearly shows that the best overall long-term health outcomes result from eating diets that are very low in fat and dominated by whole plant foods. Take care.

I was like WTF! I always try to find my own solution to my problems and here I am listening to you guys. On Monday I will be calling my doctor to tell her I found the solution to my A1c problem. Great conversation! So awesome that now there are young doctors promoting and clarifying the whole food plant based lifestyle and its benefits. I have experienced myself what they are talking about. I changed my diet from eating 'everything' to vegan, and strictly fruitarian for three years (now I eat whole food vegan low fat), and my life changed radically. I haven't been so healthy in my life, and still going strong at 44. In my family's hystory has type 2 diabetes, but I didn't got sick nor needed a doctor since 11 years. Fruitarian diet is superior in my experience, but socially is not easy, you need to eat a lot of fruits, and you become more sensible to the quality of them, and the imported ones or not ripe ones won't sadisfy you enough. My family and peers weren't so supportive at first, they resisted the new data I was bringing in the family, in Italy we were 10 pp exploring fruitarianism, there were not doctors supporting us, and mainly we got laughted after. But we were shining, like this two guys here, and that is the evidence noone can deny. Stay blessed! ex Giulia-Papaya 😉💕❤

Then I started cutting lots of carb from my meals and added lots of veges. Also I boiled water with cinamon, green teas, ginsang, mulbery leafs, bitter melons, jujubes, other herbs and kept drinking it. Then, when I go back to the doctor, Ab1c was drpped to 5.3 and all kinds of cholesterol got within normal range. By the way, I was taking Metformin 500 mg once a day. I've been doing animal based keto for a couple years, with high carb days sprinkled in. I listen to a lot of low-carb info / promotion, and I like to also listen to opposing views. This channel is a great resource. I've added these guys' book to my reading list. It's interesting how "both sides" have studies and anecdotes to support their recommendations. I'm much more interested in the mechanistic side of things, but overall outcomes i.e. healthspan must be considered also. I wish the discussion on keto would have gotten more technical, since it wasn't even mentioned that ketones are a source of fuel and also act as hormones, and that fats can also be used by many cells directly as fuel. It paints the overall discussion with a heavy slant. Hopefully the book goes into more detail. I like how Rich often brings up the opposing view (in this case, keto) but I can't tell why he's so often satisfied with a shallow exploration and then just moves on. It doesn't seem to be deliberate, but more like confirmation bias. We're only human, though.

Many people don't know that hypoglycemia can eventually turn into type 2 diabetes. I am currently morphing from being very hypoglycemic years ago to diabetic, but I'm putting up a fight. My numbers are mostly pre-diabetic now. But, in my family line, those who've eaten bad diets ended up on insulin a decade younger than I am now.
@lisaadams780
@lisaadams780 Год назад
Yes, as a young person in my 20’s I also began struggling with hypoglycemia. No doctor actually told me then that this was a major problem that would lead to diabetes later in life. I was only told not to wait too long to eat between meals because my blood sugar would drop. Eat something sugary real quick to get my blood sugar back up. It often made me sick for the rest of the day. Then in my 30’s pregnant with my daughter, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and told I would likely become type 2 diabetic later because of the now gestational diabetes diagnosis. Well by the time I was going through menopause symptoms I was also diagnosed with diabetes. I was in my late 40’s. Doctors has 3 decades to teach me about diet and how to change what was going on in my body so that I never became a diabetic despite hypoglycemia and gestational diabetes. They just let it take it’s course and then ordered me into dietary classes and classes about diabetes. Learning how I got there. I was thinking wow, why didn’t the doctors put me in these classes when I was in my 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. They knew I was spiraling out of control because of my American diet and they all just let it happen so that some doctor later would have me as diabetic patient seeing them every three to six months for the rest of my life. Pathetic to say the least! Where am I now? I was able to bring my A1C down to 5.6 two years ago with Ozempic. I had already lost 30 lbs years before and had A1C numbers below 7. I stopped taking Ozempic because of a side affect related to the pancreas if a person has something wrong with it. I have a benign cyst on my pancreas and do not want Ozempic to cause inflammation there. So my numbers are back up again though I’m working out 5 days a week. It is my diet 100% because I have rigorous classes including swimming and walking. Can we please get the truth behind what we are eating. This all starts from the time a baby begins eating table food. I wish I knew when I was having my children. Now I’m trying to get them to read about diabetes and listen to videos like this. I feel like it takes a lifetime for people to listen and learn and make drastic changes.

@@incifisenk9945 Hi colleague! Same thing here in Finland. I irritate nutritionists and health professionals, who (for the reason I can´t figure out) don´t want to hear/read/discover about the different health effects between animal and plant proteins. Fortunately patients are more open minded. In what country do you live?

Soili Kasanen Hi🙋🏻Thank you for your kind sharing of experiences and observation on your country. I live in Turkey. My mother was an MD, too. For many decades, medical academic authorities had lynched even prestigious scientists who had alternative perspectives on nutrition and medicine. On the other side, for about 20 years my country has been ruled by an islamic government which gives extreme credit to abusive, nonscience, traditional practices. Briefly everything is getting worse for us who hold on scientific methods and rely on science based literature on medical practice. As a clinical microbiology specialist I am lucky; this abusive point of view can not approach to laboratory practices.

I am so confused that I really don`t know what to eat anymore. Been following a gluten free, dairy free paleoish diet with great results both in weight and energy/performance. Then I come across these guys and I seriously start questioning everything. Again. It`s exausting when every confident expert tells you something different. These guys are telling me that what I eat now will kill me. While the other camp of paleo guys/low carbers are telling me that I will become lathargic and most likely be defficent in various vitamins/minereals if I follow a vegan diet. I am just done.

I understand. I'm a staunch vegan but keep trying different types of veganism. Right now I'm doing lower carb, higher fat. Some things are better, but some things are worse. :-/

you don't need carbs or fruit. nutrient requirements change on lower carb diets. your abortion rate also increases, which means you get adequate mineral levels. meat has the same vitamins you can get from fruit, to prevent scurvy. the reason pirates got scurvy is cause they were eating dried meat(with deteriorated mineral/vitamin content) and biscuits(which are high in carbs). they were not on low-carb diets at all. so don't listen to anyone who talks about pirates and scurvy.

Did people ever agreed on political or religious issues anywhere? Still my take is Whole Food Plant based diet with Intermittent Fasting. Only add Vit. B12.

I had the same confusion then every 3 months after my blood work I changed my diet to see the impact on my general health and next quarterly blood and urine tests. Finally I got rid of all chronic illnesses by eating healthy Vegan, I mean Plant based Whole Foods with Vit. B12 as a supplement. Let me know if you have any questions.

I totally agree, I've noticed this with EVERYTHING, it seems like people usually follow the guy who is the most confident, where my confusion is, is that BOTH ARE VERY CONFIDENT. I love the internet because you can find out anything you want to, it's fascinating and sucks all at the same time because depending on where you live you adopt what you've always been told. (More so when we didn't have the internet) I live in a world of confusion because honestly I don't know who to trust anymore, it's almost like you loose part of your identity, nothing is as solid anymore. At least that is the way it is with me..
