Keygen music is as deliberately difficult as black metal or really esoteric mysterious guy hardcore, but so much more fun.

If I had ever used a keygen program in my youth I would have been startled by the dedication some people put to the soundscape of the brief exercise of generating numbers to access the likes of Star Wars: Republic Commando, if I had ever used one.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, I was a big member of the tracker and mod music scene. I use a tracker program called Modedit back then that I downloaded off of a dial up BBS along with a sound editing/recording program called Blaster Master back then. I made all kinds of industrial music with it. I also started an industrial metal band using mod music as the drum machine and the synthesizers back then. It was a LOT of fun. I really miss those days. The mod scene has really evolved a LOT since then, but I miss those simple days when you could just call up the dial up BBS's for everything with the mod scene. It was more... personal.
@kagitsune

BlackburnBigdragon, dude that sounds awesome. Do you still have any of that music available anywhere for us to listen to?
@BlackburnBigdragon
@BlackburnBigdragon 6 лет назад
It's all on tape cassette and it's crap quality recording. Someday, I'm probably going to have to sit down and hook up a tape player to a computer a preserve that stuff. The problem I have right now is that my old tape deck has finally crapped out and the only one that I have left is an old handheld one that still runs, but the sound quality is crap. I have yet to find a modern cassette player that isn't a piece of trash either. They don't make them at ALL like they made them back in the day. I still have most of the MOD files that I used for the band and they're still playable now on the tracker program I now use. I still dabble with a tracker called OpenMPT that can play and edit them. They wouldn't be very interesting to listen to since they're pretty much only 4 track audio industrial sounding drum tracks with some movie samples thrown in and some synth samples interspersed in. We were trying to be the bridge between Godflesh and Skinny Puppy. We were... teenagers at the time with no recording skill, no equipment, no... anything. We used a 4 channel mixer from Radio Shack to do the mixing. We did do some gigs at people's houses. But that was about the extent of it. It was more of a hobby band. I have much more equipment and stuff now that I'm a grown up and have experience. Sometimes I get nostalgic and get the urge to go back and re-do those songs I wrote as a teenager with all my modern equipment, but other times, I think back and say that they're juvenile and that they should stay in the past.
@asusmctablet9180
@asusmctablet9180 6 лет назад
BlackburnBigdragon dude, the modern technology would destroy the spirit of it. People like us would run trackers and steal samples out of other people's mods... the kids of today run Ableton and think they're creating art. That short period of fun we were part of is long gone.
@BlackburnBigdragon
@BlackburnBigdragon 6 лет назад
Screw loops. Haha! From the firs moment I started seeing "Loops" start getting popular, I was like, "What the hell is this crap? This is so... limiting compared to tracker music which what pretty much like having a wall of sampling keyboards. Trackers, to this day, STILL feel a MILLION times more versatile to me, but people still obsess over "Loops" and use "Loops" and crap. Screw "Loops". I guess why actually program samples to play at all kinds of different pitches to play at all kinds of different volumes and with different effects across different tracks to do interesting things with them when you can put a couple of "Loops" on a couple of tracks and have them playing over and over again and just turn various tracks on and off again?

As someone from the scene back in the 80's, I'd say there is a lot of current groups that embrace the chiptune style (through synth) that is far more reminiscent of the crack/demo scene than Nintendo/Sega tunes which always seemed very simplistic in comparison.

I think you’ve misunderstood the music aspect of ‘the scene’ by a vast amount. Take any scene chiptune used in a scene production. You cannot identity what type of production it came from, whether keygen, cracktro, intro, demo party invite, 64k demo, wild demo, etc. Therefore you cannot pigeonhole music used in keygens or cracks in to a made up genre for the sake of a RU-vid vid. Furthermore, keygens cracktro were NEVER a platform for distributing music, let alone the primary platform in the scene. The scene has existed on, and has communities around every online protocol. Whether BBS, IRC, FTP, etc. At best you could argue the illegal aspect of the scene is separate from the creative side, but this a personal preference on the individual rather than a hard or fast rule. Source: involved in the ST demo/intro/music/pixel art/cracktro scene, involved in the SNES demo/cractro scene, involved in the module music scene. Still, I admire you bring the scene to a greater audience, and you got many points correct. :-)

I think Camboys knew that this music was meant for a specific audience, those being very curious as to what lies in the internet, while keeping it remote as possible unlike anything on the web nowadays. It really reminds me of the more earlier times of the internet, that is to find something uncovered; something remote. I appreciate them a lot for keeping that in mind, giving out a feel you would only encounter before the internet became so widely used.

Do you only focus on music to make videos about? If not, then you should check out Markus Rothkranz, who was known for his insane ability to make miniature models of ships,houses and even entire citys in like a weekend, he got hired for multiple movies to create these enormous miniatures in a very short amount of time and he did an insane job each time. Anyways, he stopped all of that to become a crazy health/fitness guru out of nowhere! And he has actually a pretty big following, his story is super weird but super interesting. Just an idea for a future video.
