Hey man! Just wanted to drop a comment saying a few weeks ago I had a pretty frustrating day, and coming to your channel and listening to your improvs was one of the most calming things I experienced that day. So, thank you so much for doing what you do! If your channel was filled with just improvs, I'd come over to listen all the time hahha. But the reviews are great and very in depth, which is hard to do with such an extensive library, but the only way to do it justice. So thanks a bunch for everything you do man!
Although I just started learning piano recently (at the age of 34), I love watching your videos. The amount of knowledge you have is fascinating and the sounds you create are beautiful. Hoping I can get good enough one day to understand the more advanced parts of your lessons, even if I can't learn to play them!
This was the my main Rhodes plugin for a few years but I have to say... after I discovered the Rhodes Affair 2, I've never looked back. I love it far more than Keyscape. Incredible playing by the way! Wow!
Hee man, jesus it sounds like you've been playing for 150 years. How did you get so good man. I just started this year, 30 yrs old wished I started earlier. I admire your skills. And yeah live streams sound like a great idea! Cheers man
Wow your improv is just amazing, how well you just develop good ideas throughout your keys man. Keep up the good work, gonna deep dive into your content lol
MKS-20 was not a card, it was a 2U rack version of the RD-1000 stage piano, with analog chorus. It used SA synthesis, not samples, somewhat related to today’s SuperNatural acoustic synthesis.
That's great to know, thank you. I didn't spend a ton of time researching the exact origins of each one. They were all created before I was born haha. Thanks for watching!
I used the MKS-20 on the Tiffany record back in ‘88, it had an interesting sound. I midied it to a DX-7 on the world tour and it held up great, never a problem..a very solid road worthy unit. I still have my ‘68 suitcase & ‘72 stage in their cartage cases, you’ve inspired me to drag them out and take them for a spin around the block. btw: I sprayed Lysol all over my TV screen after you sneezed on it for an hour & a half..and still I caught your sniffles! Thanks a lot!! (haha!) Always enjoy your playing & videos.
Great video again buddy. Keyscape seems to be what I always come back to. Cannot wait for the next update. Eric said some exciting updates are coming for all Spectrasonics products. Cannot wait. What is it you do for work?
Thanks for watching. I'm pretty busy these days. I work at 2 different school, do a lot of church gigs, DJ weddings, record stuff in my studio, just a lot. But I'm grateful for the work.
Hi Sam. Brilliant playing and great demo of the great Keyscape EPs. The passion and joy in your playing is obvious, and it’s a pleasure to watch and listen. I came late to the Keyscape party, but have just ordered it. I’ve been using Komplete Ultimate pianos, EPs, synths, etc. for the last several years and there’s lots of great stuff in that package. However, the Rhodes and other EPs leave a bit to be desired, IMO. I really wanted some better Rhodes and Wurlies and I think Keyscape is going to give me that (and a lot more!). This video helped clinch the decision to buy for me. Thanks for the great videos and please keep them coming.
@@SamTheBeardGuy BTW, Sam, the song you started playing around the 42 minute mark (song starts on a G half dim) is Cole Porter's "I Love You." He wrote it in 1944 for a stage production called Mexican Hayride. Bit of useless trivia for you.
Fantastic channel dude. Really helping me and I'm guessing many other dudes. Have you ever considered doing a Bill Evans lesson? How much did Bill influence you?
Seriously. Love being an adult but there was something sweet about those Ghost Recon days. I remember being in middle school playing the original Ghost Recon, one of the best games of all time. I miss having the map and being able to draw routes out for everyone. Even some of the original Rainbow Six games where you could draw out the whole mission and create checkpoints or whtaever they were called, those were fun days.
@@SamTheBeardGuy Yes Sam I remember those as well. Rainbow 6 as a bit too sharp for me playing against the game. As soon as I'd poke my head out I'd get it blown off!
Hi Sam ... good review man It is funny that the Keyscape Piano's are not at all work out in a live environment (compared to my Nord Stage Piano's). But the EP's do in a stunning way. So I use Keyscape mostly in the Studio.
Oh man, a big fan of your playing! The Rhodes sound is one of the biggest reason why I want to play the keys --it just speaks a lot more to me than the guitar, as of the moment of course. Any tips where and what I can get started on?
@@SamTheBeardGuy oh man, I appreciate the reply! I am trying to learn both the scales and the progression through the Circle right now 😆. I am also trying to learn the proper lh and rh techniques.
@@PedroomSessions I'm in the same situation, coming from the guitar & just fell in love with 4 note chords on a Rhodes. This video describes a cool 30min practice drill that helped me progress a lot. Basically its what Sam already recommended to you, but with specific examples on how to practice the scales, 7th chords, 2-5-1 progressions in all keys: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0vjFo3_hMs4.html
I'd say the Kronos/Nautilus EP-1 engine still trumps it for both Rhodes and Wurlitzers. The Clavinet is another story. IMO the Keyscape Clavinet library- with the included effects- has no rival whatsoever.
by any chance do you have a youtube video in mind that you think best shows off the EP from those Korgs? I know the SV "engine" is different, im not a huge fan. But I have recently found out that the Kronos Rhodes at least is hybrid modeled/sampled. Also, do you think Kronos EP is better then, say, Lounge Lizard?
Resisting the urge to time stamp all the Liccs. Nice playing man. Wish I could play like that. Im a trombonanist trying to learn keys and struggling with left hand coordination as well as both hands at once. Its easy enough to coordinate right hand and transfer over a whole heap of jazz theory into melodies, but having a lot of trouble with doing both at once. Any tips to help out?
Nice playing I recently bought Keyscape and SL88. I feel the SL88 stiff and swampy. Has Korg D1 better action? Have you compared SL88 and D1 to P125 and M Audio Hammer 88?
Not using the Studiologic SL88 anymore Sam? What was the problem with it? Really thinking about getting one so your experience would be really helpful. Also, if you only had money to buy either one of Omnisphere or Keyscape which would it be? Awesome vid and playing as usual!
The action was way too heavy for me. Like, unnaturally heavy. I've never played on a grand that was as heavy as that. It really depends on what kind of music youre playing or producing. If you're producing stuff, Omnisphere, but if you're playing a lot of piano, Keyscape is the way to go. Just depends on the genre. They're different enough that the decision should be easy enough going off what you mainly are involved with.
@@SamTheBeardGuy That's a real bummer, i sold my Studiologic VMK61 and it had a really nice feel. So i thought studiologic would keep the same mechanics and key action. What are you using now?
@@SamTheBeardGuy I love my SL88 grand, I bought and sold several midi keyboards before ultimately settling on it. But each person's playing comfort is different.
I bought keyscape specifically for the Rhodes, and from day one I’ve been a bit disappointed with it. I realise it’s a quality but of software, and I want to love it, but it just doesn’t sound like the Rhodes I remember from the ‘70’s. I’ve never played a real Rhodes, and I’m happy to be told I’m wrong, but it sounds too “tinkly” metallic etc. I don’t remember Rhodes in the 70’s sounding like that??? Am I wrong? Yes you can turn the treble down and the mechanical thing off, but it still sounds “metallic” etc. I don’t know, maybe I’ve become obsessed with it and now can’t see the wood for the trees. Any input you might have would be gratefully received. Thanks. Chris. Ps. I wish my best playing was a tenth as good as your rusty!
Thanks for watching. There are so many rhodes out there, and they all feel different and sound different, so sometimes when I play a virtual Rhodes, I make the mistake of thinking it sounds good or doesn't sound good compared to a real Rhodes I played, but they're actually completely different models.
I def prefer the modeled Rhodes personally. That particular Rhodes sound they went with on Keyscape appeals to me less, personally, then some others. I like the Isaac Hayes, mid-70s Herbie Rhodes types a bit more.
I agree. Although I can tell Keyscape is a quality product, I’ve never jelled with the Rhodes sound. It just doesn’t sound like the Rhodes I remember hearing every day on every record in the ‘70’s. It seems to “jangly” and trebbley. Yes you can turn down the trebble etc. But it still seems too “metallic” Maybe what I’m used to hearing is a processed sound rather than the sound you get actually sitting at the keyboard. It’s frustrating, because I want to love it!!!
Mainly Mass Effect legendary edition. Played a little PGA as well, and some WOW with my brother. Just anything I could do to be as nerdy as possible haha.
As far as the sound of the instrument, I'd say Production Voices Electric V wins over this. However, in terms of effects that come with it, Keyscape wins.
Just listening to this now, looking for best rhodes to buy. 30:40 moment, if you don't have that, or something like that recorded and published, I honestly think you should, cause it's great. And by the way, I'm a music nazi, I don't like 99,5 percent of music today (actually that makes me a normal person, haha). All and all, great stuff from you alltogether.
