KeyShot Material Study: Procedural Clear Coated Carbon Fiber. In this KeyShot tutorial I'll walk you through how to create the look of a clear coated carbon fiber material. It is not a 100% realistic carbon fiber look, but I think this tutorial is quite useful nevertheless. I am showing how to create a perfect checker pattern and use it as a opacity map for layering two anisotropic materials. Furthermore you’ll learn how to add the look of a clear coat on top of any material using a shiny plastic material made transparent using the vertex color node in the material graph.

1:40 : Create and layer two anisotropic materials
3:30 : Create a perfect checker pattern and use it as an opacity map
5:08 : Create threads using the brushed texture
8:18 : Add a clear coating on top of everything

Another awesome tutorial for customizing material in Keyshot. Excellent work out there! :)

Great tutorial. Thank you for the trick with the vertex colour for the clear coat.

It is incredibly perfect. You are the best artist I know. The best artist like you should be a professor at all design schools around the world. If you were a professor at my school, I could raise my quality 100 times more than now.

I was so close not to see it because of lack of interest in carbon fiber. BUT! I I am so glad I did. This was one of my favorites so far

Awesome tutorial! Trying it myself right now :D btw I thought the pattern would be like the other procedural materials in ks that wrap around the mesh seamlessly but still this looks amazing
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 7 лет назад
Thanks! I think when the patterns are visible like this, then the wrapping can't be seamless. Not sure though.
@SebasDesign
@SebasDesign 7 лет назад
Maybe the pattern texture is not math based procedural like the wood or noise textures

Hi Esben, this is an incredible video thanks for sharing. I'm pretty new to Keyshot myself. I'm trying to follow along but am having trouble adding the layer to the material at the 3 minute mark in your video. When I try to drag the coppied material to make 2 layers it does not connect for me. Is there something I need to do to the initial material (other than make it Anisotropic) to be able to link them? Thanks

Hi there, nice work, just wondering how to adjust the size of the carbon fibre weave?? it comes out to large when applied
@tonsab.assist.master
@tonsab.assist.master 6 лет назад
Great tut! But I am having doubts about the texture mapping. What if we have a a very complex shape? Box mapping or any other mapping type seems to produce discontinuities. How can I overcome that?
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 6 лет назад
Thanks, Tony! For more complex shape where you can't accept any visible seems, you would have to look into UV-mapping. Something that is typically done in the software that you used to create the model. Hope it helps. Cheers,

I was following the tutorial until about 8 minutes, when you add the bump add utility node. The results are completely different for me in Keyshot 7 and also, they seemed to have adjusted the UI overall a bit as well...

Really leaning alot from your tutorials! Thanks. I have one question. I am using Keyshot 8 and my [material graph] is quite different. My Material starts with [Material]- surface --------(connected) -------- [Anisotropic] 1) has a [material]box already linked. And cannot link a Duplicated [Anisotropic] to the original materials label. - Geometry - label 2) also there is no "mesh(polygon)" only mesh(circle) 2-1) I can change the shape of the mesh from circle to square and make a checker pattern, but after that boxes won't link. does this difference come from pro and non pro version? or am i doing something wrong. ;(

Nice tutorial, the material looks amazing in your video but I cant get it to work in keyshot 7, half of the options you use is not there or I am doing something wrong:/ when I import this material from the cloud or from your link it looks very very bad on any model. Any help would be very apprieciated.
@esbenoxholm
@esbenoxholm 6 лет назад
Thanks, dzikbk! You're not the first one pointing that out. Seems like it would be beneficial to do a KS7 edition of this tutorial. Adding it to the list.

Good tutorial! but i have a little problem, when i try to import the material "Procedural Clear Coated Carbon Fiber" Keyshot show me a message that the program stopped working and when try to open keyshot it say the same. If i delete the file generated with extension .mtl it works like always but dont have the material ... I,ve explained well? Thanks for the tutorial !

As you stated yourself Esben, this is not a correct carbon material, and calling it the video so, is perhaps a bit misleading
