I have the 20cm square book, have been using it for ages and do not feel precious about it as it is such good value (was even better when I bought it around three years ago). My 15 x 15 bought at the same time is still untouched. I love this paper, do most of my swatching on it because of the way it accepts the pigment. I just get a better indication of the quality of the paints from using this paper. I also have loose sheets in a3, 4 and 5, in two different whites and some mixed grey blues, all equally nice to work on. One of the things I like best about this paper is that it is very irregular due to its handmade nature, so once painted it also has a very pleasing appearance and actually refracts the pigment beautifully, making whatever you paint rather more lively, and the contrast between it and a smooth mat when framed enhances the effect. The darker toned papers take all mediums well, except oil, and I dare say if you gessoes the surface it would take that as well! I particularly like the way it takes oil pastel, the iridescents look really lovely as well, as do any gold and silver water based inks and paints. I have never used the smooth or rough but hope to try them sometime. Thanks for a really well made video, that Jackson’s info is confusing! I have tried several times to buy the larger book, is it 30x35, but it never seems to be in stock. I think they do huge loose sheets too for the really adventurous! I certainly value an alternative to the hugely expensive machine made alternatives, which are a little intimidating to use given the cost. Even the little imperfections in the khadi paper range make for a kind of encouragement to paint. It is maybe not the best paper for those who like to paint very delicately or who are very perfectionist in their techniques, and definitely not for anyone wanting flat even washes with no unevenness at all. For everyone else it is a paper you can get to work on!

I also have such a Khadi block, I do 't really consider it a sketchbook, I just rip the pages out as I use them. Don't really trust such a glued spine. It's very soft paper, and you can forget using masking tape or fluid, it will rip. ✌️✌️✌️

so glad to see this! you know i have a mixed relationship with my khadi. i also would love to see even just a quick painting/swatching video and how water behaves for you. maybe i got an odd batch or maybe that's just how it is. i totally love the rough texture and gorgeous granulation... but it really behaves odd for me, like it has no sizing. water doesn't flow, it just immediately absorbs. i'm learning how to work with it and have fun regardless! i find the pigments stay pretty bright. i've done a lot of swatching in it and while i struggle to get gradation with the lack of flow, the colors are just gorgeous - turned out to be some of my favorite swatch samples.

Thank you for the review ^_^ I understand how you mean that khadi paper is like cloth, at least the one that is thinner than 300gsm. I have used 300, 600 and 150 gsm from khadi. Honestly I prefer the thin paper because of how pliable it is and how easy it is to use in a sketchbook and in finished works. I have found the 300 and 600 gsm very thick and not...comfortable enough to paint, not sure why. It is very different than standard watercolor paper, both cellulose and cotton, at least in my experience. It is one of my favorite papers for handmade paints and granulation because of how organic the result it.

I have 20 sheets of Khadi but I find them waaaaay to soft for my references. So I mostly use them for ink and paint sketch where I mainly paint wet on dry. On the flip side, the granulation on Khadi is beautifuuuul, of all the papers I've tried, I like Khadi the most for granulation. What is your favourite watercolour paper? Mine are Saunders and Arches, I might like Arches a tad better as Arches can take a lot of scrubbing and abuse. I'm rough and abusive toward my painting hahaha.
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding 2 года назад
ahh yeah i guess since it’s more cloth-like it is softer than regular cotton paper. agreed on granulation 😆👍🏻 my fave would have to be khadi but it’s not cheap for the 210gsm ones. so my second option would be Baohong. it’s affordable enough. and 🤣 do u scrub using watercolour too? or is it for mixed media? any paper pilling?

@@PaintinHiding hahaha by scrubbing I mean lifting off the colour using a hard bristle brush. I find only hard papers like Arches or Baohong take scrubbing/lifting well. Haha, I stuck around 'til the end. ☺️ I have a few of their sketchbooks. Their soft cover ones have larger papers than the hardcover ones of the same size, for them the cover is the stated measurement and the pages inside a couple of cm smaller to fit inside. The softcover ones are 20 sheets (whole, folded papers) total, including the back and front, so that is 40 pages x 2 sides. The hardbacks have the same amount of papers inside, and you also have a front and back sheet that's likely not meant to be painted on, but just part of the construction of the sketchbook. I find the 150 gsm ones rougher or as rough as the 210 gsm sketchbooks labelled "rough". And Jackson's listings also call the 150 gsm sketchbooks "rough" in the title, which I find appropriate. ☺️ I've just started painting some on their 210 gsm paper so I can't say anything about that yet, but for the 150 gsm paper I find that the quality differs somewhat from sheet to sheet, which is to be expected in handmade paper. On some the color stays beautifully vibrant, and on a few it dulls down. I haven't had sizing trouble with them. I don't find them great with layers, especially with granulating paint, though granulation shows up beautifully in a single layer, and the paper can't withstand work (which is also expected since it's so thin). I think that might be a pro for practing not fussing about, but it's for sure a downside when you actually need to be able to layer a bit. I really love these, they are great for beginners (being one myself) who want to use cotton paper, in my opinion. And I agree that they take water well, and the buckling is surprisingly acceptable considering the weight. Stay away from The Fat Book! There is sizing issues with some of them that make me sad to think about. 😭

hannahhhh! i got the the log book by the way ;P haha! anywayyyyy.... ok so you have pretty much ALL the khadi books! AMAZING! 😆😆😆 ok, i definitely did NOT know the hardcover ones come with smaller pages, that's very good info. is the softcover and hardcover ones you mentioned, are they both SMOOTH or ROUGH? and thank you so much for confirming the number of sheets/pages. [for anyone reading hannah's comment, her 20 folded sheets = 20 folios, 40 pages = 40 individual sheets, x2 sides = 80 pages --- so hannah is indeed confirming that my suspicious are correct]. waaaitt... u think 150 gsm that khadi labeled as MEDIUM is as rough as their 210gsm ROUGH? 🤯 absolutely amazing info!! you're like the walking khadi encyclopedia :D thank you so much for taking the time to write a lengthy comment. i'm sure many people will find this useful :D awww noooo~ i was looking to get the fat book later 😭 would u say it's the same as the log book? i tried the log book and there's so much paper pilling even as i make simple swatches.😭

@@PaintinHiding Haha, I'm glad I could help! ☺️ And yes, the 15x15 cm 150 gsm books as well as the 20x20 cm version are as rough as the rough 210 gsm paper, but their paper vary some since it's handmade. I have softcover sketchbooks in both smooth and rough and a hardcover one that's smooth, plus a landscape hardcover that's smooth and a large one (30x35 cm or something like it) that's rough, the last one having the most rough surface, but it's very close. I'm really excited to start painting in them for real! 🥰 The Fat Book has pages similar to the 150 gsm ones (though they're thinner), and works beautifully when the sizing is alright, but unfortunately just a few pages were problem free. What happens is that the paper gets blotchy as you paint on it, and the paint seeps through the pages, so I'd avoid it at pretty much all costs. It's unusable for watercolors. Perhaps if you use gesso on it and work with acrylics or something it would work. If someone has ideas I'm all ears! ☺️ Perhaps watercolor ground or something could work, but then you'd have to factor in the cost of that. The log book's pages actually take the paint, though yeah, you can forget doing anything but a very quick swatch and no layers. 🙈 I like that Irit Landgraf compared it to newspaper, because it does feel like the watercolor equivalent of that. Cool that you tried it! ☺️

Great review, I have often put these in my cart at Jackson's but never actually bought one. I take it the paper has very soft sizing, and since sizing is starch, it makes things stiffer. So that might be why the paper is more flexible. I had the Stillman & Birn Alpha and finally finished it, I hated it, the only thing good about it was the color :-) I used it as a color mixing journal, but it really washed the colors out and made the paints look bad! I'm pretty sure it was just an oversight on Jackson's part. Companies often only count one side of the page to make the book sound bigger than it is. I guess Khadi just tells you how many pages it really has!
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding 2 года назад
soft sizing... hmmm i never thought about that. i guess that could definitely be why. wait, sizing is starch? i thought it's gelatine? i'm so confused (insert confused emoji) regarding stillman, YEAAHH i agree. i'm glad i was able to get the sample pack because i really don't like their papers/textures. i love how stark white alpha and beta are though.
@jennw6809
@jennw6809 2 года назад
@@PaintinHiding Vegan sizing is plant starch... gelatine is also used. But think about gelatine dessert - it thickens and stiffens, like starch. Both provide a coating to control how fast the water penetrates the paper. Hard sized paper, the water will bead up on the surface. Soft sized paper, it absorbs more easily. Unsized paper just absorbs the paint instantly and doesn't allow for blending.

@@PaintinHiding Of course! I'm glad my obsessive research is benefiting someone LOL. I know you got the St. Cuthberts samples, and that one contained a sample of "Milford," which is very hard sized. I guess you can create snow effects and water effects quite well by sweeping a big wet brush across the surface (it beads up and leaves a pattern of white spots). In the US, Strathmore brand cellulose paper is very common, and I find the 300 and 400 series to be sized very hard as well. (Although it might be more about the cellulose and its absorbency, more than the sizing). Either way, it's very difficult for the paint to soak into the paper. But it gives great color separating effects when using mixes! I actually like Strathmore 200 as practice paper (even though it's only 200 gsm) because it takes the paint more like cotton. Not good for serious wet on wet, but for quick wet on dry sketches it's ok. It's in the 90 lb Visual Journals. I also happen to like the Strathmore Mixed Media visual journals, which are 100% cotton paper, but it's unsized. I had to try it, cause it was cheap and I was curious. And then I was like, oh, I see, you can't blend on it at all, and it does not do wet on wet well. Although it's really nice for other medias. I decided to use it as an art journal and make ugly drawings expressing all my bad feelings, LOL. So I started drawing some ink drawings from my imagination... and then I started painting some of them... and I realized it's very fun to paint on! You can layer instantly, so if you paint in a style where it's ok that you see all the brush strokes, it works great. It's perfect for making very quick & "messy" line and wash illustrations. It got me drawing and painting from my imagination (which is a miracle!) and in a style I never would have done otherwise. I'm nearly finished with my first book, and I bought another one! So what I'm coming to realize is that almost any art supply can be used to wonderful effect if you accept its limitations. So are the Khadi sketchbooks good for watercolor? Well yeah, they are great, if you realize they won't act like western style paper. Hey I forgot to say before, I really appreciated the breakdown of the different kinds of books Khadi makes -- that was SUPER helpful. I've never bought one before, mostly because it's quite confusing how many styles they offer. Not to mention that some are vegan and some not!! Also, it turns out that they are twice as thick as we all thought, so that's REALLY important! Thank you so much for that, I'm sure I will refer back to this the next time I order from Jackson's.

YES! i did notice that with the millford! definitely hard-sized. ohh i think i know what you mean with the strathmores. we have some local cellulose paper here too that seems to be sized very hard as well. i definitely prefer hardsized over no sizing at all. awww thank you very much Jenn! :D yeah, it took some time to make the table of the different khadi books but i figured even i'll be referring to it every now again too.

Hey Arches makes 2 colors too! It should be noted that some High White papers are bleached and may not be archival. vvvvvv

@@PaintinHiding I don't, I'm sorry I can't tell on camera! It does say on the packaging if you still have it. Also, I noticed you have the Saunders Waterford samples in this video. One of them is High White and the others are their Natural White. You could compare your Arches to that and see.

@@PaintinHiding I just looked into it and discovered that Arches only makes the Bright White in loose sheets. All the blocks, pads and rolls are Natural White. Also, I don't think I told you but I went to my local art store the other day -- and came home with a sheet of Arches Elephant size paper, 102cm x65cm! I had no idea they had more loose sheets in the back of the store! 🤣
