I think this was a really great review! I have it and (for watercolor) I agree with you on most points. I had a mix of colours staying bright and getting muted, and ultimately, the fact that I couldn't get a reliable representation of what the colours looked like made me not want to buy it again. Love your recipe book thought, though! It's making me think that my current system of scattered postit notes is perhaps a tad chaotic... 😬🙈

I've had one of these for a year that I use as a weekly journal. I try to do at least one sketch with every entry. It actually works very well with watercolors, and as long as you don't use super-wet washes, it handles just fine. It also works well with nylon bristle water-based pens (like Zig Clean Color real brush pens) and blending, as long as you don't do too many wet layers. But don't use felt-tipped brushes. They will drag and pill the paper. Ink also works well on the paper, but only from certain pens, like you mentioned. I wanted to use dip pen nibs, but they just scratch. But fineliners and brush pens are great. I haven't tried pencils yet (other than for under sketching), but I can imagine the satin-like, slick surface might be an issue. I'll try watercolor pencils next time to see. I've been able to do pretty detailed drawings with no issue, and watercolors layer fine. The granulation has mostly been as expected, and even got a nice, even, color-separating wash using (usually subtle) QOR's PB29 and a red. I don't think I've had to clamp the pages, either. The only pilling I've gotten was from erasing with certain erasers or using felt pens. In a nutshell: it's been pretty good so far, though I don't push it too much. Good for ink and wash, watercolor sketching, and nylon bristle brush pens. Don't erase too much, don't use heavy washes, and don't use dip nibs. And if you're worried the pages may be too small, then they probably are. It's right for me, but I work tiny.

💛 I like the idea of using it for quick studies. It’s cheap enough to not care about making “ugly” mistakes.

yes!!! that’s exactly why i got it. “if i cant do watercolor on it, at least i can use it care free”

Thanks for the review! I have the Khadi hand bound sketchbook, hot press/smooth 210gsm and I have struggled with this sketchbook so much. The paper pills, the sizing is inconsistent, and on some pages watercolours appear less vibrant. However I find it is good for gouache so that’s what I’m using it for now.
@PaintinHiding

yeah, i have the other version that’s 150gsm that is more similar to your 210gsm and have had the similar issues you’ve mentioned

I love my Khadi log book. I've had it for a year and three months and I've nearly filled it. In fact, after about three months of using it, I ordered two more! 😂 And I finally just got a Khadi fat book 😂😂(I haven't used it yet). I use the log book for planning palettes, but the thing that is the most fun is just playing with paint. I'll choose a limited palette and just paint abstract spreads, letting the colors evolve as I make changes. I can easily fill up six or so two-page spreads in one sitting. Is it the perfect paper? No. Is it totally worth it? Yes!

yep! love khadi! if u love the log book, you'll love the fatbook even more. i posted a review for the fatbook a while back and seems like everyone was going nuts for it. since u already got it, u'll know what it's all about ;D

It's similar to cloth cotton. Hand made and not highly pressed like general cotton WC paper.. I love it and didn't expect it to behave like the other papers. They do make WC Khadi w/140 gsm. I'd love to have that Logbook but they seem to be a UK item. 😕 Thanks for the information

Every point you mentioned is so perfect for what I need it for 🥰 I always paint with a lot of washes and I want to practice painting, espacially florals with minimal washes so this paper is perfect for what I need it for!

The way you describe it sound like the paper called Shizen Design. It feels like cloth, the paper pills, and colored pencils and ink doesn't work. I hate the hot press sketchbook so much! 😔

I love my other khadi pads, things always look better on it. I am interested in painting direct with no drawing and mixing on the brush, with maybe later when dry additions of dark or metallic small highlights or details. Nothing to stress the paper. I also love squirrel type brushes, so lovely and soft and gestural. I think this book would suit me! I am not that fussed about needing to support it a bit, I would either use it on a table with something underneath or hold it in one hand and just paint fast and free in midair! Your mixes are beautiful, btw, and I do not agree that the classical layering techniques are necessarily the only way to view skill in art. There is art in getting past technique and being very direct. You can see this very clearly in old master type oil painting, the developing artist is painstaking, but the mature and masterly ones achieve the effect they want easier, and in a more free way…. The visual ability to communicate in fewer strokes is quite powerful. To be able to do so without prepreparing is an art in itself. As to size I wonder if some lovely bookmaking person, maybe SeaLemon might know whether this log book could successfully be split into two, given the type of binding?
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding Год назад
thank u for your kind words Lindy~ ❤ im not sure if you could safely separate it into two. feel free to tag sealemon, i love her bookbinding content as well 🥰

The people I've seen who really like the Khadi paper use it for very, very loose painting styles, like "slap the paint on quickly and spontaneously" and incorporate a fair bit of mixed media. Very textural, very loose, not much "traditional" technique with a lot of wet washes and layering. Basically my impression is that it can be good for art that incorporates some level of water based media, but not the kind of art where you use a lot of water or work the paper a lot. I do like that kind of size though - I generally draw and paint fairly small, but the thickness is a bigger problem for me. I get very annoyed with books that thick, they're a pain to work in 😅
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding Год назад
that’s true, im not a fan of having to find a book to go underneath it all the time~ so annoying! 😤
