Garbage cars... These kids are doing nothing new, just exploiting a problem that was sort of solved in 1985 in other cars, where it wasn't exactly child's play to smash the ignition off and use a screwdriver or stick to turn the ignition switch. The "smash the ignition" problem was eliminated around 05 when practically all cars came standard with immobilizers (chip keys) but kia didn't do that... So with a poor ignition key assembly this is what you get.

@Tom the problem with Hyundai and Kia is that it's SO easy. 90's Hondas (and other 90's cars) are also a similar target, but they are harder to find and the ignitions are not as weak as a twig. These are very basic cars... I'm not being biased, it's just how it is. The tools required to steal any other modern car aren't a viral video away, the tools and skills (computer skills and wireless communication skills) are too extensive for random joyriders. These people aren't even picking the ignition locks, (which is a skill that could be used on all 90's cars) they are just smashing them off, showing how weak the ignition lock is. The media makes it seem like only a USB cable is required, but that's not true, that's after the ignition is smashed off. A stick could do the same thing. these cars simply have extremely easy to break ignitions. If you gave me (or a competent mechanic) an 80's car with no key, it would be harder to get running than a modern kia or Hyundai. The ignitions were very reinforced, (with a steering lock) and the process to bust them out was way longer. Yes you could become a pro at it if you specialized in a car, but it was still much more work most of the time than these Korean cars. .

@@volvo09 Good info thanks. So in one of the demo videos it looks like it's a push button that this hack works on but comments on this video are saying it affects Kia's with non push button, regular keys. What's the truth on which cars are vulnerable, one, the other or both?

@Tom Because those cars are the most common cars in america. They’ll most likely be chopped up and sold, stripped and frankenstein reassembled, or just straight out used as a crime car. Kia’s and hyundai’s are common but not popular, so you could see why stupid teens would want to joyride it and ditch it, rather than actual criminals trying to take your car and you never see it again

So true because they won't know if the device has been installed or not, insurance company suggested get rid of vehicle after it is repaired. But then the value has decreased because of the risk of it being stolen no-win situation to the consumer at all

@@rr6202 back in the day we would race, no screw driver, outside of a locked car, using only the seatbelt, on a Chevy celebrity my buddy had the record of 15 seconds, just cuz he was lanky af.. I could do it in 22 flat.. the 90’s were great, these dudes had nothin on us, crash up derby in brand new Cherokee Eddie Bauers, Us in West End Pgh and Trenton NJ went back and forth with most stolen.. They all did Hondas wit) dent pullers, we just had screw drivers and Chevies and Jeeps were pretty much made to be stolen.. smh.

They have. All that did was stop them from taking the car. It didn’t stop them from trying so now I have a busted window and ignition. Whole steering wheel column is effed up. Thousands in damage but they didn’t steal it.

They tried stealing by Kia soul 2012 twice now. First time, they broke the passenger window and ruined the ignition. Had to get it towed. The parts were in bake order so took 4 weeks to get it back. I drove it for like 6 -8 weeks and they tried to steal it. Fortunately again they couldn’t and didn’t ruin the ignition so I was able to insert the key and drive it. But it’s getting ridiculous. Gotta fix the window again . I’m afraid to even park it in the street anymore

even my 2004 hyundai tiburon had PATS system, so it disables fuel pump if it can't read chip inside the key. I wonder how old these stolen vehicles are.

they break the ignition lock,remove it and simply insert a usb cable to the electrical part. I fix cars for a living, i haven't seen one of these yet, but if that's simple to break the lock, this cars should all be recalled. This should not be happening. I own a 13 Accent.
