Kia's 2023 Niro Is The Affordable 53 MPG "Crossover" You've Been Looking For

OK, so the Niro is more of a boxy hatch, but at least this time it *looks* like a crossover. For 2023 Kia has completely redesigned the Niro for better handling, a roomier interior (now with more legroom than a RAV4) and even more fuel economy than before. Be gentle with the go-pedal and you should expect up to 53 MPG combined if you select the skinny tires.

There's a little blip at 17:28 that we're working on with the YT Editor, sorry about that, somehow it escaped our proof-viewing team

As for your EV6 question I would ditch it for the plug-in hybrid Niro because that’s where the majority of your viewers are going to go who don’t have the extra $7500 in their budget to purchase and relatively fat MSRP. The all electric use for short lunch runs while at work and average MPG to and from starting with full charge at either end will be key points to a buyer who have similar driving senecios. Not to mention skipping the CCS infrastructure. So how does the Plug-In compare to the Lighter Hybrid?

My 2018 Niro LX converted me to hybrids. It will be 5 years old in July (end of bumper-to-bumper warranty), with zero - ZERO - maintenance issues and superb fuel mileage. I've taken it on multiple lengthy trips (3,000+ miles), and even though 75 mph on the interstate is not the car's strong suit, it still gets 46+ mpg. I normally get around 53 mpg around town in warm weather, around 42 mpg in the Minnesota winter. It's faster than the Crosstrek that preceded it, not as fast as the Mazda3 that preceded the Subaru, but my days of street racing are long over, so I'm OK with performance that's just "adequate." I hope to replace my 2018 with a 2023 when they're available around here.

U can get a 90s or 2000s car very cheap if you dont want to pay for the new car tech
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 Год назад
It starts well below that. $40k gets a vehicle with features only luxury cars had until recently - dual-zone climate control, a big infotainment screen and electronic instrument panel, heated and ventilated seats, rear vents, USB ports for all passengers, wireless charging mat, etc. All that plus a highly sophisticated and very efficient powertrain that works very well. This is pretty much a perfect vehicle for many people, with room for four adults plus decent cargo space, and nice amenities. Yeah, it's kind of slow by modern standards, but by the standards of any previous decade 8.5 seconds 0-60 would be considered quite decent, or even quick if you go back to the last century. The lack of AWD will be a negative for people in cold climates, but half the country doesn't need it ever, and even in snowy places a modern FWD car can go most places perfectly safely. AWD is nice, but only essential if you drive on poorly maintained roads. There are plenty of other crossovers if you insist on having it. For the rest, this is a very well-rounded vehicle. It's nicer and better equipped than most competitors, even in its base trim, and the competition is mostly pretty dull and a lot less efficient than this, Corolla Cross Hybrid excepted.

2020 Niro PHEV owner here. I have been overall very happy with the Niro. I get great fuel economy in mine. I have, on average an 85 mile round trip commute so I drain the battery fully every day. I do not like the interior in these new Niro. I love the physical buttons in my Niro, I feel they did it correct in the last generation with real buttons. Everything Kia seems to have these damn touch buttons and I do not care for it. I do not mind the DCT transmission I like the way it feels, with a very large caveat. I have a shifting "issue" at highway speeds, sometimes. Its common to have bad shifts in these Niro's from time to time. I have tried to have it repaired, but of course the repair center knows nothing about it. This does cause concerns for long term reliability. But in reality, I will most likely trade this off to something else in a year or 2 before 100k miles so I am not to concerned. When it shifts correctly (which is most of the time) it shifts smooth as butter. and from the view point of an engineer, its amazing how well the transitions from EV to HEV at every speed. It must have taken alot of time with tuning to get it to shift this well. I personally am keeping an eye on the new Escape PHEV as an alternative to the Niro PHEV. I do wish the corolla hatch came in a PHEV version.

It's nice, though some Toyotas are slightly better. I wish the highway mileage were a little better, but this is a relatively tall vehicle and aerodynamics is key at highway speeds. The Prius being so low helps it a lot. Still, this is very impressive, and it doesn't wheeze and whine like the Toyota hybrids do under acceleration. I'm rarely bothered by engine noise, but the Prius is unpleasant.

Terrific review. Having just owed a Niro touring 2019 I can compare the difference as I just got a 2023 Niro EX last week. I loved the 2019 but it had these drawbacks. Cabin noise and lack of a good passenger front seat , My wife is happy with seating in 2023 roomier and quieter. Front passenger seat toggles higher, head rest adjusts and cabin noise is significantly less! .I test drove the base model niro with 16" wheels it was improved over the 2019 but I choose the EX, 18" tires to have better feel of the road. The handling is worth the expense in my opinion. I drove my 2019 in sports mode about 35% of the time and still never got less than 480 miles of driving with 11 gallon fuel tank. The best gas mileage i got was 46 overall. I never got less than 41 miles per gallon and I live in a hilly neighborhood. The 2023 is suppose to get about 4 more miles per gallon can't answer that with only 1 week of ownership. I love everything about this car but I don't really care for change to rear tail lights going up like on the Volvo S60 90. The front of the Niro is much better looking so i guess I'll get use to the new look. . H

Thanks so much for the review! I was considering the new model, but right now I'm staying with my Niro HEV MY2020. I prefer the "rugged" matte look of the plastic at the bottom of the car's body instead of the glossy one here. The interior looks great, the exterior is very nice too, but I prefer more subdued look. The features that I find tempting are the updated "auto" regen and Cruise Control with the option to read the road speed signs and adjust the speed accordingly. But that's not enough justification to make the jump.

I ADORE my 2017 NIRO -- got it when they'd only been in the States for three weeks. (Actually bought the one I test drove!) I average 52 mpg, nearly all local driving; and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that I can fit 20 bags of mulch in the back!! (I call it my baby sport-ute...) It's a delight to drive -- even in heavy ATL rush-hour traffic (thankfully, I rarely have to drive in THAT!). I replaced a (4-yr-old) Sonata; very good car but the NIRO was/is SO pretty! I look askance at the 2023 because of a few things -- that stupid-weird headrest, and if I want the top-line, I don't want the Harmon Kardon thing taking up storage space! I WLL be going up to my dealer to sit in, and maybe drive, the new one... This was a GREAT review -- covered so much stuff!

I would say that the Toyota engines are probably more reliable.. They use Dual injection vs just GDI in the Kia / Hyundai engines. the GDi engines tend to have issues with carbon buildup on the intake valves. That will require periodic cleaning.. maybe every 100K or so. Also Toyota uses a very simple planetary split device in there Transmissions.. vs a Dual Clutch. Thought this is a DRY dual clutch.. probably more reliable than the Wet dual clutch in the other cars he mentioned. Glad we have all these choices.. @@kens97sto171 Actually, the wet-clutch trannies tend to be more reliable, because they minimize clutch wear. The fluid helps the clutch slip smoothly until it engages. That's why higher-powered applications use wet clutches, so they don't fry the clutches. The early Hyundai dry-clutch DCT had some reliability problems, especially in bigger and more powerful vehicles, so they developed the wet-clutch eight-speed. Not sure what this six-speed is, though I suspect it's a dry-clutch design, as it isn't handling that much power here.

The ones I went to around the LA area are all awful… compared to Toyota dealerships… it’s such a horrible brand experience I hope that Kia can take this into account

This also a common complaint about dealerships and service. Not doing correct oil changes and seemingly trying to get out of warranty work. Some nice vehicles and great warranties in theory but Toyota still has a dealer/corporation advantage but less EV's. They do have many hybrids though. If it were me i'd sell a KIA or trade in before warranties run out, they do have some nice cars but a shame about the dealer/corp.

@Hallowsaw
@Hallowsaw Год назад
Those power numbers are actually really good. You dont need tons of hp to drive on the road. 150hp can get you to 100mph. That being said, you need high torque rating to have adequate acceleration. Keeping hp as low as possible will result in much better gas mileage. Hence why this thing is as big as a rav 4 essentially but way more efficient.

Thanks Alex. What I'm noticing after watch several different car videos is that the basic layout of the cars in this category are all pretty much the same. While the interior dimensions are slightly different something like a Chevy Bolt EV/EUV isn't much different overall. The thing I don't like is the cross platform, you really can't beat a built from ground up EV as opposed to an EV/Hybrid/gas vehicle. I understand manufacturers are doing this to save but I consider it transitional as EV's are the future of travel.
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 Год назад
True, though this is more convincing as an EV than many multi-powertrain models, with generous range in EV form and relatively few packaging compromises (slightly less rear seat space). I agree that it makes more sense as a hybrid, though. It's just packaged to have an ICE up front.
