I test drove this last fall and it's a fantastic urban crossover. Great features with a nice drivetrain. In Korea though, we get real two tone leather seats that are heated and ventilated, as well as the heated wheel. I think you guys are gonna like this!
My only complaint against Kia/Hyundai is their quality. I had a 2012 Sonata Turbo in Limited trim. Engine seized due to quality issues they had. Hyundai refused to repair the engine on warranty (the car had only 52k miles and 2.5 years of use) because I was using an aftermarket oil filter. That is illegal under the Magnuson Miss Warranty Act. Even after they recalled the engine they refused to repair it to like new standards or change it. How can I trust a company that touts people into buying their cars because they had a huge warranty but then refuse to live up to the expectation? They are simply dead to me as a customer. My father has a Santa Fe...I can't tell you how many things he's had to fix in five years...power window mechanism, 4 brake sensors, electrical issues....and so on...Kias are mechanically speaking Hyundais...based on our experience they aren't worth the money if you are a keeper.... I'd rather pay a bit more for a Toyota or Honda and save the money in the long run.
The seltos actually gives more leg and headroom in the front and back seats than the Rav4… only a little less wide, and a smaller trunk. But the amount of money you save for the seltos over the RAV4 makes losing a little trunk space worth it, and gaining some leg room.
Excellent job, Alex! Love that color, and the cabin seems to be pretty versatile. The styling is really attractive in my eyes, too. One of the better looking offerings in the class, and driving performance seems pretty fun. Keep it up!
If you are stuck in stop and go traffic all the time get a #Hybrid . I have to congratulate Kia/Hyundai for keeping things boxy as this is the most efficient shape for passengers and cargo. Finally, the lock of the center coupling for the AWD system should be mandatory on all AWD CUVs.
The 2021 Kia Sorento really looks nice. This Seltos is pretty nice too. All they need now is an all new, redesigned Sportage and Kia will be the segment leader in all categories. Love what Kia is doing right now.
After watching for well over a year, your reviews are at the top. You tell the truth without bias and you don't sound like a used car salesman. I think KIA has another home run with the Seltos!
Hi Alex. There is a lot of variation between manufacturers when it comes to engine automatic engine start/stop. It would be great to know what models have it, how smooth it performs, and how easy it is to disable (hard button or on-screen). Your reviews have tons of data, but this would be a great addition because shoppers want to know.
I saw this same Kia (color and trim) at the Cincinnati Auto Expo last week. It was my wife's favorite SUV. She loved the color, me no so much, but it could grow on me. My 6'3, 295 lbs fit quite nicely, and even had room in the back to sit behind myself. I did not feel like a Fat Guy in a Little Car. Interestingly, the Chevy stand was across the aisle from Kia's. The interior quality and feel of the $29.000 Seltos bested the $50,000 Blazer. (And don't get me started about the interior quality gulf between the Traverse and Telluride!) My only disappointments were the lack of dual climate control, paddle shifters, heated steering wheel, and cooled seats. But even so, this is the front runner to replace her Mazda3.
Kia is killing it in terms of the design! This is a very handsome looking car. Gr8 job Kia! In terms of size and inner space, how does it compare to Nero?
I like the dashboard layout in the top-end trim with auto-climate control and also like the boxy design which has a similar looking side profile to the Volvo XC40. The head light and grille upfront looks grown-up and upscale too. Nice CUV
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I agree. It just seems like a missed opportunity to not execute the launch without this package. For those of us who are currently in the market, many of these features would be considered deal breakers/makers and there's no time to wait.
The Canadian trim has an available heated steering wheel apparently. It also has a heads up display on the top trim which I am not sure is included in the US trim either. Extra stuff is indeed available, just not the launch year I guess down in the States.
It seems to drive well on open roads, but how does it perform in stop/start traffic? This is where most DTC's, etc really show their performance limits and no reviewers seem to test this at all.
My sister just got this. EX trim. Nice pretty car. Roomy. Good price. Only problem is road noise. Maybe better wheel and tires will fix that. But other than that, I think it’s a good daily!
Hey Alex, I just saw Redline's review of the Seltos. Imagine my surprise when you showed up in the front passenger seat. And THIS time around you didn't look like you were kidnapped and forcibly held against your will. I loved the cameo. Fun times.
Alex is so smart! So many idiots out there calling the gear shifting turbo lag. Thank god there are actually car reviewers like Alex who know what they're talking about! Thanks Alex!
I was told that I would be the first one to test drive one of these in Alabama. I test drove a Red Seltos S, and that thing is a dream. Bigger than the soul, gas milage almost like a Sedan, lots of cargo room, smooth and comfortable. I'm not paid by Kia to say this, but this is going to be my next vehicle.
We mad an "out the door offer" on a Kona limited three weeks ago and the dealer didn't take it. We landed the same way as you, Seltos EX just came in and we may buy it tomorrow
The middle trim would be the best choice to review as most people would be more interested of buying and from there they could add their personal add on features
The 2.0 engine is Multi-Port injected if you don't like direct injected. If you want reliability, I go with the 2.0 engine if you can deal with a slow car.
@Jean Toronto Raptors talking about that, yes HR-V may be a better car solely for the reason that it is almost 5 years old now and has all it's bugs sorted out by now, Seltos being an all new vehicle will need at least 1 year of refresh to be actually able as a blindly recommendable small SUV. But CH-R on the other side my friend, though may have the compatibility of a Toyota, but a daily using car, it is way too compromising especially those back seats are very uncomfortable and that trunk area is abysmal for a vehicle which likes to call itself an "SUV"
@Jean Toronto Raptors The CH-R is front drive only, and no optional engine, with the base engine quite underpowered. It should at least get the 2.0NA from the Corolla hatch that makes more power, and a better CVT. The HRV is quite outdated, and also underpowered. When Autoblog did their subcompact comparo, it came in dead last.
@Jean Toronto Raptors Not sure what the big attraction for a FWD only, 141 hp nonturbo, CVT model is, that is the the slowest in the class. What am I missing here?
Thanks Alex. Had to buy the SX T-GDI AWD, the price was so good for what we get. I first wanted the CX-30 but the 250 hp motor was 4k more than the top trim Seltos, I could get the new Bronco for that. When I first drove it I tried to kill it, I was not expecting the handling to be anywhere as good as it is for not being a Mazda in fact the mazda did not have as sharp a handling as this SX seltos. If you are driving in and around traffic and people asleep at the wheel a lot like me, you will notice how easy this Seltos is to dart through and around sleepers, intown and on the highway. I drive hard and this thing can be driven. I think this is the first vehicle in my life that I purchased and actually like the tires that it comes with. The 235 45 18 Kumho Majesty tires are so much nicer than what other brands are throwing on their SUVs. Drive the non turbo Seltos back to back with the SX turbo and you will notice the better ride and quieter tires on the sx, this vehicle is louder inside than what I am used to especially in base trim. Mine is all pearl white with the sun roof option and the Costco discount ,loaded 28,333. out the door. 0 buyers remorse for the first time in my life.
@@SWEETVENOM100 MPG is as advertised i use 91 octane so for the long stretch highway trips i can get over 400 miles to the tank a little better than advertised. road noise is not good but its tolerable, i did some extra things for the road noise that has helped. The tiers aren't bad its wind noise you will notice and under body noise , I added 2 pieces of light weight noise canceling material under the spare tire in the back , cut one bug piece to cover the whole bottom and one long piece along the floor board front of back seat cut to go under the front seats. I also have good quality tint all the way around with a thick sun shade. So now a jeep wrangler is definitely louder than this seltos now but before id say seltos was about the same. depending on the highway speed you go. FYI the Bronco is just as loud at 80 MPH id do the same things to that if I bought it. Quietest was I think the CX30 or cross trek, wasent really something I had much attention to at the time. I hear the little buick is most quiet if its something you need.
@@darvelbidenisapuppet7275 I’m in Canada and we have smoother roads than the USA, so it should be better but to hear you say the road noise is not good is worrisome. I am looking for a quieter ride but willing to make a little compromise if I gain other things. My orders SX doesn’t get here for another few weeks, I’m indecisive about buying it now🥴
@@SWEETVENOM100 Well I did commute in a BMW 535 I for 5 years so K have ben a little spoiled like I said, road noise may not be great but it's not worse than almost every other SUV under 30k. Nothing in that price range is great for road noise. Also I'm almost always at 80+MPH on highways
@@darvelbidenisapuppet7275 ahhh makes sense, Our highway speeds here are 65MPH. Ok well I won’t cancel my order and hope for the best. I’ve heard the Bose stereo is laughable but I guess it is what it is at this price point. Here it’s about 40K OTD
I would lovvvvve a video of this vs Kona. I personally loved the Kona ...so much that I almost bought one. I ended with a Santa Fe because I’m moving out the city and gonna start popping out some babies.
I fully support the stand up infotainment systems on volume brands since it allows them to swap in and out screens very easily on higher/lower trims across the whole lineup, lowering cost in more ways than one. On more premium/luxury brands thought, they should just make the better screen standard and integrate it. One thing people have to remember is they have a "volume model" which is what sells the most. For this thing it will likely be the FWD model with the standard safety features. AWD is nice but for snow, which is what most people want AWD for, FWD is just as good. On the note of the "tweener" comment, the telluride (and palisade) are full size crossovers, just there are only a few others which is why they're usually called large mid size crossovers. The chevy traverse, buick enclave, and arguably the subaru ascent are really the only other full size crossovers. The mercedes GLS and bmw X7 also apply but are completely in a different category of luxury.
And you know this from a video? Kia had a really bad rep, and if they keep putting out cheap cars with a thin veneer, it won't change. Every time I mention Kia to a friend, they say don't buy. Too many long term problems. I'm not into super-expensive three year leases.
@@SaraK_69 All recent cars and many of them. Just to confirm, I went to the NHTSA site to read the kinds of complaints that are being made against Kia. They just don't stand behind their cars and the lawsuits against them which they lost further underscore the problem.
@@rich3419 bought a brand new kia rio 2013...over 100.000 on it Change oil 11 times 2 brand new set of tires That it...never have a problem with this little car
@@rich3419 I don't know where you get your news from but KIA has always stood by my 2015 Forte5 SX, also ALL of my dozens of friends who have KIA's love them! They are reliable, and the dealership network at least in the Midwest is absolutely amazing. Maybe you're getting them confused with Honda. GM, Ford, or BMW who stick it to you when their engines start on fire or blow up even though they are still under warranty.
I finally test drove some of the smaller suv's -kona,hrv,seltos and I really find the engine of the 140'ish horsepower trim levels on all of them really struggles when taking off from a stop . I would suggest really getting to know the vehicles quirks before pulling out to pass an 18 wheeler on a regular highway with oncoming traffic . once you get up to regular street speed or highway speed they cruise along nicely but I dont think I could get past that struggling off the start on a daily basis .
Best looking car in the segment, along with the Mazda CX30, imo. What takes it out of the running for me is the drivetrain in the top spec AWD version; there have been many reports of premature DCT failures on other models and I would rather have a naturally aspirated engine. Offering the only naturally aspirated engine with a CVT in a decontented base version is not the smartest move!
@@sir_john_hammond I'd much sooner think it 'fails' because it's poorly designed. Besides, I'd like to have a transmission that just works, like regular autos do, without me worrying about using certain techniques to avoid having it fail!
Which one will you pick? Kia Seltos SX Turbo or Toyota RAV4 XLE (similar price model)? Does Kia has a good liability comparing to Toyota? But the RAV4 XLE has much less stuff comparing to Seltos SX turbo
Hyundai/Kia are both behind the game in terms of adaptive cruise, Japanese brands have adaptive cruise standard but with Hyundai/Kia need to get the top trims
It depends on the model. But, in general terms H/K will add blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic as standard while Toyota and Honda make it optional. It's a matter of preference at that point. You also have to factor in pricing, the Japanese entries are likely more expensive comparably equipped.
Great review as always. When will you do a review on your home course. I’m interested in the acceleration and noise levels comparing the EX and SX trim
Really compelling package but I would wait a few years for confirmation that the DCT is reliable. DCTs in cheaper vehicles don't have the best track record.
The poor Sportage is the overlooked crossover in Kia's lineup now with the new Seltos and Telluride grabbing headlines. The new Sorento will probably generate buzz as well later this year. The Sportage is the Jan Brady of Kia crossovers.
Always love and watch your videos but the second cam and fade effects were disorienting. Much rather the jump cuts especially watching on a 60 inch tv.
Like Mazda's CX-3 and CX-30 one has to wonder about KIA's decision to offer two subcompact crossovers, the Soul and the Seltos. But while I suspect that the CX-3 won't last too much longer in the American market, KIA's ability to divide a market segment into slices so thin they would make Kramer proud I suspect that the Soul and the Seltos will each do well with somewhat different groups of customers. The Soul has an amazingly broad appeal to demographic groups ranging from 20 something hipsters to young families and downsizing seniors. The Seltos, on the other hand is focused more precisely on the entry level SUV customers who currently consider the Honda HRV and Toyota CH-R.
Thank you, Alex. Excellent presentation. Very detailed until your hands-on drive review. In the market now and looking at the Kia and the Hyundai comparable models.
Great review overall like normal, yes. Unfortunately there's also weird camera angles and some audio sync issues. Prefer the older format with just looking into camera or looking at components, don't need the drone footage/from the side/etc.
So, Kia says their CVT should have the same long-term durability as a conventional automatic transmission? If true, that's good to know. I'd like to know what their engineers would say about their DCT's lifespan (and the expense of replacing its clutches)?
The DCT clutch packs should last well beyond 100,000 miles. DCT clutches last far longer than a standard manual because the robot is never going to "roast the clutch"
Another nail in the coffin of the sedan segment. Cute little station wagon. Would be fun with a 6 speed manual. You'd think Kia could squeeze 40 mpg on the highway in this small vehicle. If you think this is cute, check out all the other neat Kia models you can get in Europe and Asia. I'd like an Optima Sportswagon with a diesel engine and 6 speed manual transmission.
Very interesting car, the point is that in UE we don't have the Seltos but the Stonic and actually the US version of Kia's compact crossover is much better than ours...
Despite the chain, the IVT does not appear to be reliable so far. The rubber belts on other CVTs don’t seem to be prematurely breaking anyway. They had other issues. Do a search on KIA forums for IVT problems and you will see there have been several threads about transmission failures in other KIA models using the same IVT. It remains to be seen whether this is all from manufacturing defects of early builds that will be corrected on newer builds or if it is an inherent design flaw that will remain for years.
We'll have to see what the metrics bring in. So far my connections at Consumer Reports are showing above average reliability. There will always be some fringe issues but we won't know until about 2 years in. That said, the long powertrain warranty will cover any issues in the average ownership cycle.
Alex on Autos There is always risk in buying new cars with new powertrains. Kia Forums are showing several people having complete transmission failures in their IVT-equipped Fortes and 2020 Souls. Maybe Kia has found and corrected the major issues by now. Or maybe these people are not participating in Consumer Reports reliability surveys. However, Kia/Hyundai does not appear to have ever fixed a cylinder design flaw in the 2.4 litter Theta II engine used across many of their late model vehicles. Owners just have to rely on the warranty to fix it if it fails before 100K miles for the original owner only. Powertrain warranty expires after 60K miles as soon as the original owners sells the vehicle unless the vehicle is resold though the CPO program. Kind of makes those vehicles disposable at an early age and destroys resale value of out of warranty Kias and Hyundai’s with a reputation of short-lived powertrains.
@@webcomment8895 I think CR stops surveying cars more than 5 years old. THAT is when things start really falling apart. Manufacturers know how to game the game. Modern cars are overflowing with planned obsolescence which is why 3 year leases are so popular. No one wants to hold after the warranty. You have to know when to fold them. Really expensive implied lifestyle.
moving to Colorado at the end of the summer and looking at a good AWD vehicle for mountain driving. I have a 30k budget, so this is up there on the list. Also looking at the 3.6 liter Outback (would have to get that one used) as well as the Crosstrek. This one seems like the most bang for the buck. Decisions...decisions.
I am still confused how this car came out at the beginning of the year and was a 2021 model. Cars that are made to have the following year are usually manufactured after the halfway mark of the year. That means, they are manufactured after June.
The CX-30 is 173" in length while the Seltos is 172". But the Seltos has 26.6 cubic ft of cargo room behind the rear seat compared to 20 cubic ft in the Toyota and over 63 cubic ft of overall storage compared to the CX-3's 46 cubic ft.
"How far we've come" indeed. I don't know if Peter Schreyer is still there but his styling has made KIAs some of the best-styled cars around. I see more people looking at the KIA Optima than just about anything in its segment. Honda is a client of mine and I still cringe every time I see a Civic.
Im curious you say you are in San Antonio Texas to test thi model but the license plate is from California. Are we suppose to believe that Kia shipped already plated vehicles to Texas for these test drives??? Something does not make sense.
My biggest gripe with Kia/Hyundai has nothing to do with the quality or execution, it's the resale value. Unlike a Honda or Toyota, they loose value astoundingly fast. We've got our 2016 Kia Sedona SX rust proofed every year to keep it in great condition and we were looking at selling it or trading it in for a small awd suv for my wife and it's simply not worth any money. We found that if we had spent another $4000 at purchase for a comparable Honda or Toyota, we would of had $8000-$9000 more in trade in value. We can't even get reasonable trade in value from the Kia dealer. I'm afraid it will not be Kia/Hyundai for me anymore.
How many miles?? What did they offer? I find that dealers totally hose you on any trade in no matter the brand. Better off driving them until they are worn out and getting your moneys worth. With the stock market on fire you will have a lot more for your retirement
@@hamerplayer1229 120,000 km about $43,000 new and valued at $18,000 or $14,500 trade in. These are rough numbers. We had intended to keep the vehicle for a very long time and I was insisting on an AWD suv when we purchased it but the wife said the van made more sense at the time. Now she is thinking awd suv and I'm like....you chose the van and now you have to use it until there's 300,000 km on it. After that, used vehicles only, just like before. I'm due a new-to-me vehicle in another couple of years as mine is 4 years older. I'm thinking used Tacoma or Ridgeline.
During the European presentation in Austria the Russian bloggers from Clickoncar took it off the road for like 10 minutes and on the way back the CVT completely died on them. I guess for now the reliability of the proprietary Kia - Hyundai CVT is questionable until they will figure out what was wrong with it.
Now that some time has passed since this review, this isn’t really capable off-roader. It’s good enough for dirt roads, but the clutch on the Seltos burns up quickly for anything mildly challenging. In contract the CX-30 and Crosstrek are much more capable.
I like the styling but the price doesn't scream bargain like the Telluride. If Kia is trying to push the higher-trim versions, one should consider sensibly-equipped models from premium brands like the Mini Countryman.
Kia, congratulations, very nice styling this model should do well. Very unique and different. If you are on a budget or want to save a few dollars in gas, the small engine with turbo will do just fine. Some people will like this color and some will hate it. Personally, I like the blue with white top. With such small engines, I wonder how it does passing uphill on a mountain road. Sometimes you need rush of power to avoid problems on the road.
Engine start/stop feature! No thanks....to bad because it is a nice looking vehicle. (Nice camera work hiding the disable button above the drivers left knee).
Not having adaptive cruise control and Lane keep assist standard on all models so I can make it self drive like a Honda or Rav4 with OpenPilot is a deal killer. Also I dont see it competing with the Rav4 at 33mpg with AWD or the hybrid AWD at 40mpg, Kia did well as early on with the Soul, as entry level but decent sub compact, but they need to step up to compete with honda and toyota in this segment now. Yah its a cheap supcompact suv but its just that.. Cant argue with Kia's 100k warrantee, all cars should be the same for what they cost today.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide yes it's less expensive, my sample locally, a gas LE RAV4 AWD is 28k, 23k for a Seltos LX AWD but has a lot less features, it's smaller and less mpg. You get what you pay for I guess.
Looks really sharp in that upper trim. I think they should’ve went the Accord route and offered full LED headlights and taillights and active safety features across the trim levels. Charge more for awd, content and features. If I was in the market for a CUV in this segment, I would pick this over everything else. Hats off Kia!
