I think that just adds layers to it. The fight is not over directly relates to the history of these two. O’Ren started this fight, but now the Bride gets to finish it
I think what really makes this fight, for me at least, is that, in a way, O-Ren isn't afraid of Kiddo because O-Ren believes that she is all that superior. Both woman are incredibly strong. But O-Ren, more than anyone in the film, understands the power and desperation of revenge, as she killed the man who murdered her parents when she was at a very young age. I think that when she saw Kiddo for the first time in four years, she knew that it was revenge that brought Kiddo to her.
XOXOLADIDA O-Ren is scared shitless. From her expression when Kiddo first reveals herself, to her shock when she cuts of Sophie’s arm to her worrying expression as Kiddo approaches. She’s afraid.
pok3rfacReturns O-Ren wasn’t afraid. Actually O-Ren was the most skilled out of all the Vipers. The look on her face was not fear when Kiddo called her out. She knew it was her from her voice, she called her out in Chinese and when you’re the most powerful boss and someone calls you out and says they have unfinished business, then you know you’re about to fight. O-Ren underestimated Kiddo’s skills.
@@pok3rfacReturns O-Ren underestimated Kiddo the whole time and I can see why. Kiddo may have been the best of all of them, but that was years ago and she'd been in a coma for so long O-Ren thought she's lost all her skills, and in a way she was right. The Kiddo that Pai Mei respected wouldn't have gotten hit by her in their final sword fight. Kiddo lost a lot of her skills, but even then she proved to be the best out of all of them.
that death rides a horse is pure poetry in this scene. Uma's expression when she steps out from behind Sofie like "yep, bitch, guess who!" is my favorite part of this movie. Also love that as cool as O-Ren tries to be you can see she's a little scared shitless at finding her here.
Yeah its subtle but Lucy Liu is such an amazing actress here. O-Ren knew the moment she saw Black Mamba and the intensity in her eyes that there was a chance she wasn't leaving alive, despite her backup. She knew what they did to her and from personal experience what kind of woman Beatrice was from their time with Bill. That slight moment of fear from someone who knew they fucked up by not finishing the job when they had the chance.
This felt extra personal - because it was. O-Ren's betrayal ran almost as deep as that of Bill's, because she and Beatrix were very close prior to the Two Pines massacre. The look on Beatrix's face as she walked out from behind Sofie was downright chilling.
@@imkool51391 It is heavily implied during the first volume, the fact that she only knows Oren's backstory and what happened to her in all the squad because it is something they shared as friends, the fact they had that line "Tricks are for kids" as an inside joke, the fact that in the final battle before Beatrix kills Oren, Beatrix cries and both women look somber, neither of them wanted this... the only time Beatrix cries after killing someone is Bill and after she kills O-ren, she hesitates and decides not to turn around to see the corpse of her dead friend.
So many layers to this scene. 1. The chaos inside the room and the tension about what could happen to “Charlie Brown” 2. Oren Ishiiii - Beatrix’s war cry and that moment of reckoning in Oren’s eyes . 3. The thugs storming out of the room, and visibly perplexed , that it seems for a moment , they’ve forgotten protocol and have to remind themselves to slide the doors open; and Oren’s ceremonious walk out of the room. 4. The close up to Beatrix’s eyes, perfectly synched with the “Death rides a horse” boom. 5. Beatrix’s rage at seeing Oren, and reliving the past, which climaxes in a swift slicing of Sofie’s arm. 6. Oren’s surprise as Sofie’s arm gets sliced….Oren has seen a lot of things, but witnessing Sofie being mutilated and Beatrix bathing in her blood does a job on her. 7. The perfect transition of Death Rides a Horse, as the bar’s patrons storm towards the exit , and Beatrix menacingly walks towards Oren, then the shots of the Crazy 88’s faces in a state of shock and rage thinking to themselves “who is this crazy b****h?” This scene is l poetry in motion. One of my favorites ever. I didn’t understand the genius of Tarantino until Kill Bill.
Jason M did you just find out about the Manga or something ? Tarantino makes tribute cinema, Kill Bill is his tribute to 70s martial arts films. He made people on set watch Lady SB in between takes, not new info lol
Jason M Blatantly "ripping off" previously-made content ≠ using said content as inspiration for any modern-day interpretation of the same thing. Not a difficult concept to comprehend.
0:28 “Hey! You know who you look like? AH! Charlie Brown!” “Yes yes he looks just like Charlie Brown!” “Hey! Charlie Brown... eight pepperoni pizzas!” “We don’t make pizza here sir!” “I don’t give a damn! Order the pizzas then!” “Hey hey Charlie could you give me a kiss?” “O-ren ishii! You and I have unfinished business!!!” *arm is chopped, jntense staring ensues* “Charlie Brown... beat it!”
The most funny thing here is that Charlie Brown, has the same color code than the original Charlie Brown and he's bold like him, he looks exactly like him ^^
I like how most of the time O’Ren is very stoic and calculated with her demeanor and attacks. But that brief break in her coldness at 1:42 really says how much she was actually caught off guard by her former friend and member.
Beatrix pulled The Tanaka on O-Ren 😆 I've noticed everything that happens to O-Ren is all sins she committed in the past against others - her family get killed by yakuza, she kills them, she becomes yakuza boss who dies after hurting innocent family to be. She cuts Tanaka's head off and watches her friend being disfigured in the same intimidating. She's Chinese American playing Japanese samurai murderer, gets killed by white American with better sword 😆 she got what she asked for since age of 11
My favorite part of this scene is during 1:22 where the Bride shows herself from behind Sofia and the background music just intensifies as the Bride and O-ren see each other once again.
2:05 You can actually see O-Ren gradually becoming slightly intimidated, like it just dawned on her that this was once a woman feared as the most lethal in the world, and she crossed her.
she's the most poised actually (O-Ren_ you can see the Asian warriors are not intimidated easily, she just got surpised to see a dead person back alive or comatosed, waken up...Vernita begged for her life, Ellle was mouthy all throughout their fight, Budd did the least noble & shot her..
@@angel91485 nah it was fear. Remember no one else knows what real vengeance besides o-renishii ....until this moment. Thats why its fear, Beatrix is coming for her the same way she went after her family's murderer when she was 14. Revenge comea full circle so they say.
I know O-Ren was a villain, but she's always been my favorite character. Love how she was such an elegant badass in this movie. The confrontation between her and Beatrix was so beautiful and iconic too. I like to think that O-Ren definitely recognized the level of threat this situation posed for her and just how much she'd screwed up, given her own background with revenge. Would totally watch a movie following O-Ren's rise in the yakuza, or when she worked together with Beatrix.
Yeah, I saw both volumes in the theatre and it was epic. And don’t get me started on how that coffin scene in vol2 played in the theatre. Pitch black and you hear nothing but dirt in surround sound??? Traumatic. Lol.
2:15 Love that bit of Orans face. The queen of the underworld who seemed like her whole life unbothered after the murder of her parents. She saw her own death walked into that room on her happiest time. Lucy n Uma did a hell of a job on their roll. Wish she was second last to face, but the bride got the hard stuff out the way first.
O-Ren spent some of her life pursuing then brutally killing the man who killed her mother and father. She is no stranger to revenge and vengeance and knows how it makes people. O-Ren and Beatrix aren't too different and Beatrix seems to know the most about O-Ren knowing her entire life's story. This was the second most personal fight for Beatrix besides Bill himself.
For those interested in some theory, a response I posted to someone's comment on another video: The idea about honor is nice. I always thought that O-Ren allowed Beatrix to get up because killing her in a fashion similar to how she killed Matsumoto is beneath her. If you pay attention, every one of O-Ren's kills since Matsumoto has shown her either decapitating or headshotting her targets. When O-Ren said "Silly Caucasian girl who likes to play with samurai swords. You may not be able to fight like a samurai, but you can at least die like a samurai." To me, this is what decided the fight. It is a loaded piece of monologue for multiple reasons: 1. If what I am saying is correct and O-Ren believes that killing any other way that decapitation is evidence for lack of skill then we can understand why O-Ren did not kill Beatrix on the ground. 2. Per an interview with Lucy Liu on her role in Kill Bill and the script for Kill Bill, we find out that O-Ren has always wanted a Hanzo, but was rejected when she tried to obtain one. O-Ren took this rejection as a personal insult, but as we find out from Beatrix's encounter with Hanzo, Hattori took an oath to never forge or give away another weapon. Upon finding out that Beatrix possessed a Hanzo, O-Ren likely felt insulted and this is the cause of the insult that she said to Beatrix. Referring to (1), Beatrix slaughtered her guards, true, but not in any organized manner. Beatrix cut people in half and tore out their eyes -- this is not the mark of a warrior who should be wielding a Hanzo, it is the work of a "Silly Caucasian girl who likes to play with samurai swords." Little did O-Ren know, Beatrix was not granted a Hanzo due to remarkable skills but rather because Hanzo felt an obligation to help right a wrong he felt he made possible (he trained Bill). 3. As I referenced in (2), the original script for Kill Bill is available to the public, you need only google "Kill Bill script" to find it. In the script, we find that both Beatrix, along with Bill, inducted O-Ren Ishii into the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. This is very crucial information, as it was at age 20 that O-Ren was one of the greatest assassins in the world (per Beatrix's narration) but it was not until age 23 that O-Ren joined the squad. O-Ren already had a reputation upon her induction, and it is with that notoriety that the words, "but you can at least die like a samurai" result in the death of O-Ren. In essence, what O-Ren said was, "I am not going to lower myself by killing like you, instead I will collect your head as a mark of superiority." It is at that point that Beatrix put herself one step ahead -- she knew O-Ren's next move. As you can see when the fight resumes, O-Ren is cut after she attempts to behead Beatrix, and Beatrix having correctly predicted O-Ren's killing pattern was able to score a hit and limit Cottonmouth's mobility. This was a fight between old comrades and was not a fight Beatrix could simply power her way through. It almost seems as though the Hanzo sword was a requisite for O-Ren's death. Even if Beatrix managed to get through the Crazy 88 with another sword, the psychological trigger that pushed O-Ren to reveal her cards would be unaccounted for. Also, the killing blow in this fight was a toss-up between a 360-degree decapitation vs a 180-degree slash through the skull, decided by the quality of the weapons in use.
Absolutely beautiful dissection, a true attention to detail. To be honest, I did not realize that O ren went for the head as her final attack, but extremely fitting (for the multitude of reasons you listed) truly an exceptional film, and what a final showdown. Quick, flashy but not over the top, very real, and very brutal
Yuuki Hyuuga sweetie, they look poker-faced and relaxed with the gum. I don't smell fear in them.....Oren's perhaps displaying too much boldness with her upright posture as she is walking...
1:41 is really what sells this cene to me. Knowing O-Rens backstory, she doesn't fear anyone or anything. To see her holding back how scared/horrified she is really shows what a threat Beatrix is.
Sophie deserved that and worse. The expression of her face as she held her arm out to grip the pillar she knew things would forever change. The look of Beatrice when she first sees Cotton Mouth I don’t think I blink the entire time.
The greatness in this entire scene is where the fun, music and Japanese quirkiness ends and the audience is reminded of why we’re here in the first place. The music when O-ren is called out and Sophie gets her arm chopped off makes me feel like I’m in the jungle. It’s so animalistic compared to the fun earlier in the scene.
So much to say about this fuckin scene it's ridiculous!!!! Loooove When she calls out to Oren bold asf ready to battle and did it in her language to make it absolutely clear her purpose! Her cutting Sophie's arm to let everyone know she meant business. The look in Oren's eyes when her name is first called and when she first sees Beatrix...the song... everything!!!!!!!! Oren recognized that same revenge in Beatrix that she herself had as a child and knew shit was goonna get real. Beatrix knew exactly how many people she had to go up against and still showed up! Its subtle but that had Oren shook 😂😂
Oh man I remembered watching this the first time and I was left speechless. The way she screamed, “you and I have unfinished business” sent chills down my spine. I just wish I saw it in theaters. I wonder what that would have been like
I saw it in the theaters. About 1 min into the movie the main character gets a bullet through her skull! I looked at my friend, "Damn, . . . short movie."
Beatrix was like "Oh...so you're just going to chill in the back and talk on your phone while I get my pregnant ass jumped and my fiance and friends lay dead on the floor? Gimme yo arm bitch!" lol
She should have told Elle they have unfinished business while Beatrix and Elle have their stare off Beatrix flashback to what the vipers did to her and the music plays in the background.
I love EVERYTHING about this scene. The music building to a crescendo, the business owners placating & being humiliated by Oren Ishii’s entourage, every actor here is exactly on point & they're all wonderful, the costumes that all seem like homages to various American, French & Japanese films, the gorgeous set so perfect for a dance floor & then a massive martial arts battle. The zooms to the eyes, the two beautiful women in the middle of so much death, the exaggerated martial arts sound effects. All of it works!! I've always felt, more than any other Tarantino film, that Kill Bill One is about the pure kinetic thrill of cinema without almost anything else being involved
Just a little tid bit if people didn't notice or noticed but couldn't join the dots. The scene where she calls ORen is showing only her lips and the background is purple. Purple is the representation of snake venom/ poison in this case. Remember how all their code names are snake names and the Heroine's is Black Mamba. So, the scene represents her words are full of her venomous vengeance that befalls O'Ren , GoGo n the Crazy 88 after this.
Every time Beatrix calls O-Ren out that gives me chills. I wonder if O-Ren recognized Beatrix's voice after all these years, because her face was like "WTF? Who is this calling me?" Just for a second. And the timing is so perfect, Beatrix make everyone shut up with this one line. Look closely at O-Ren's lips in 1:28 she says the bride's first name "Beatrix." At the moment she saw her, she knew exactly why she is there without a doubt. Cutting Sofie's arm like that shocked even me, and I am not easily shocked. I love how even the body guards are shocked and pissed, they probably saw Sofie as a family by now and wanted to protect her too. I like that O-Ren had some logic and decency to send Charlie Brown away. He is innocent after all. And then a moment later sending a body guard to die, instead of fighting Beatrix by herself right there and then.
No you are mistaken. She did not send Charlie Brown because she cared about his innocence or something. She gladly sacrificed Crazy88 for a chance to beat a tired Beatrix in 1vs 1. She did that because the owner of this establishment was loyal to her... Hence she switched off lights to give Crazy88 a chance to win.... Charlie Brown here was an employee aka an uncertain factor. If you are fighting a life or death battle, you minimize uncertain factors.... And yes O-Ren was that crafty it was shown in the anime part of the film telling her life story....
@@bakairosan4126 Yeah but I was not completely wrong. Charlie Brown was innocent and had nothing to do with all of that. Even if he knew what O-Ren is all about to some extant, he still didn't deserve to die there and it was the right decision to let him go. At least on that- Do we agree?
Ohhh daysz, Oren....she's just the villainess in white. Ha! Her possy walking in was sick! Love the track when Beatrix is on her motorbike before going into the tunnel.... :)
For whole the time thought it was in Japanese 😅 He'll be comin' down the mountains He'll be comin' down the mountains He'll be drivin' all his hatred He'll be drivin' all his hatred Who'll be the first to test his gun Who'll be the last to see the ground And when appeased will be his hatred And when complete will be his revenge Who had put flowers on your grave There is no way out for you, men And also for you who always have won comes The moment of truth comes... The moment of truth comes...
Still one of the best female-centric action thrillers ever made. I cannot believe that Tarantino has never done a superhero movie (although _Kill Bill_ has all the elements of the best superhero narratives).
Julie Dreyfus did a great job screaming because her arm was cut off. It made me cringe listening to it. Everyone in this movie did a great job showing pain and were not afraid to look ugly doing it if they needed to.
