----------
There is no shortage of reprehensible people making popular music. Everyone got their moment of righteousness with that last Chris Brown album, but let's not forget that John Lennon, Axl Rose, and Yanni all have histories of domestic violence. It can make listening to their music complicated.
But what about murderers? What about real murder music?
Our story begins in 1560 -- Carlo Gesualdo was the Prince of Venosa and a composer whose work influenced Stravinsky and, later, Aldous Huxley and Werner Herzog. He also murdered his wife, her lover, his father-in-law, and infant son.
Admittedly, the son and father-in-law have been the invention of an over-zealous press, but he definitely still strung up the mutilated bodies of his wife -- who was also this cousin -- and her lover in front of his palace.
The early days of the blues and R&B are littered with supposed criminals, maybe none more infamous than the Prisonaires.Formed in the Tennessee State Penitentiary, they featured two convicted murderers, recorded at Sun Records and were an early, critical influence of Elvis Presley.
The Prisonaires regularly and controversially performed at the governor's mansion. But like many black men in the American south at that time -- including artists like Buddy Moss and Son House -- it's unlikely they were guilty as charged.
X-Raided is a Sacremento rapper currently serving 31 years for first degree murder -- and the lyrics to his track "Still Shooting," where he seems to be describing the killing of a rival gang member's grandmother, played a critical role in his conviction.
X-Raided has continued to record from prison -- his 1999 album, the Unforgiven Vol. 1, reached #54 on Billboard's rap chart -- but he's resorted to smuggled DAT machines and collect phone calls to record vocals.
His notoriety has brought some unwanted attention -- like getting stabbed seven times.
But the use of X-Raided's lyrics in a courtroom was controversial, and set a dangerous precedent -- there's currently a non-lethal shooting case before the New Jersey Supreme Court where a defendant's four year-old rhymes are being used by prosecutors to suggest intent in a way no one would attempt with, say, country music.
Richard McCroskey, or Syko Sam, was an aspiring horrorcore rapper from castro Valley who murdered his girlfriend, her parents and another friend in what became known as the Farmville murders.
The vicious 2009 killings game McCroskey a new audience for his sub-ICP music -- the kind of people who become penpals with serial killers in prison. And, as always, turned the media's attention on the evil influence of music.
Artists like Syko Sam and X-Raided made violence a core part of their image -- but what about, you know, hippies?
Charles Manson is one of America's most notorious serial killers and the wirter of an album full of jangly weirdo fold called LIE: The Love and Terror Cult. A year before the Family's infamous string of murders, Dennis Wilson, brother of Brian, befriended Manson -- it's how the Beach Boys came to one of his songs.

tobias andreasen nope, I'm scanning all my local record shops for that album. It would be a really big show-piece as well as a piece of true musical history to own one. Amazon has them for $200, but my local record stores are not that well read on rare pieces of vinyl ;p

+Austin Campbell Yeah totally did it out of self defense that's why he stalked the guy to his apartment, brutally murdered him wanted it to look like a break in and then laughed like an arrogant little boy in court. Totally self defense. Also not like Varg is a neo-nazi hiding in the woods with his bat shit crazy family or anything. He's legit fucking Norway's B-rated version of Charles Manson. I personally don't give a shit that he's crazy or a murderer, but I don't get why so many of his fans and followers try to cover up his bull shit and say he's misunderstood or that he really truly felt threatened by every person he's threatened or attacked.

Charles Manson was not a hippie. He was taking advantage of hippies. I can't judge every single person on a crime. Some people murder people in self defense, came from a troubled past, were young, some did it cause cops wouldn't help them. Part of why I like Johnny Cash for doing concerts at prisons.

@@georgekostis5403 Kinda. He's since become very vocal about the fact he isn't actually a Christian and just took a gig in a Christian Metal band to milk money out of Christian metalheads he knew are starved for content. So he's really just a scumbag exploiting people's faith for money like a televangelist.

Relevant to the topic of liking music from people who have a not so sound mental stance on some topics, lostprophets was my first introduction to music that was not country music as a kid, and this lead to me really opening up and listening to anything that could be considered music. I really lost interest in the band after their second studio album in 2002 but still had a place for them in my heart, and then all that crap went down with the lead singer/songwriter in 2012, I feel guilty for still liking some of their earlier music.

I think this is kind of why separating art from the artist is something we need to discuss as a society and where lines are drawn by doing so. There's some objectively awful people who were unrepentant to the day they died but that were also geniuses in their mediums and had a far reaching influence on their craft.

I place musicians who kill in the same category as actors who kill or commit some other serious crime; I separate the Artist from the Person. In other words, when I watch a movie with a actor who has become notorious for a crime I make a distinction between the character the actor portrays and the actual of person of the actor. For example, there is no reason to suddenly hate the character Cliff Huxtable because of the notoriety surrounding Bill Cosby. Thus, I will listen to music my a musician in a similar situation. That said, there is a difference when listening to a musician who continually composes music about certain murderous acts. If that musician is bragging or making light of the victim I probably would not support the music(once I am aware of the fact) but if the music is just music...then I see no reason not listen, enjoy and/or support the music.

Kinda late here; I don't know if these guys have been mentioned somewhere in the huge backlog of comments... But the first names that come to mind for me are music producers, who didn't play any instruments or sing themselves, but still had huge influence on their musicians. There's Phil Spector, who's worked with the Beatles and is credited with the "wall of sound" production style. He also had a habit of pointing guns at his girlfriends when they came over to his house. On one occasion, the gun fired, the woman died, Phil wore ridiculous wigs to the murder trial, and he was convicted. And there's Joe Meek. He was the man behind The Tornados (they of the instrumental rock hit "Telstar") and a bunch of other British musicians, one of the first auteurs of studio recording techniques, and something of an electronic music pioneer. He was also very paranoid, possibly mentally ill. (Joe was gay, and I'm sure Britain's laws outlawing homosexuality did wonders for his peace of mind.) Paranoia, combined with depression over shaky finances, led him to kill his landlady and then himself.

Huddie Leadbetter, better known as Leadbelly, was convicted of murdering a man, after he was thrown in jail he supposedly convinced the guard to let him go, by singing him a song to prove his innocence, and after he got out he attempted to kill another guy. He was also a blues icon, he recorded old slave songs and wrote songs of his own, later to be covered by legendary bands that enjoyed his work, such as Nirvana.

I think for example, when a song is «covered» ( I don't knpw if it's the same word in english cause I live in France and my english/american writong is bad & I am «limited» with some words or expressions ) ; -But I think we should watch if their is a relation with the rank of murders etc, wjen a song like the one the Beach Boys took from Manson, since it wasn't a big lapse of time beetween, and that clearly Manson is not singing the same sentence that what he used for the title . In french we call in the «language of the birds» AKA «la langue des oiseaux » to be short, but I'm hearing him say something about «taking a loaded gun» or something like that . It's like the famous «bone apple teeth» instead of «bon appétit» . If someone knows what it's called in english, please tell me. But I think it would be interesting just to see . But I don't want to imagine the work it must be LOL, but not LOL for the murders..

This reminded me of the drummer from Emperor. After killing a man after he claimed was trying to fuck him, he has later come out and said "I just woke up one day and wanted to kill someone, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time". He did his time and is now back with the band!

I refuse to listen to anything by a murderer, abuser or rapist. Not to mention pedophiles. The lead singer of Lostprophets (who you probably don't know but they had that one song on guitar hero) plead guilty to raping a child.Everytime I hear that song now I want to throw up.Knowing the horrific things these people did,how can you separate it from their art?Art,music is often made of peoples souls, from real feelings and experiences.Anything made by Manson contains part of him and he is pure evil. Why would you want to consume any bit of him?How could anyone enjoy?

Some of the greatest music and art in general, are the results of troubled minds, domestic violence is something that`s a lot more common than most people think. And rappers often come from hard neighborhoods, where you`re growing up in broken homes, forced into gangs, and killing means nothing to many. No surprises here.. Also, first time I`ve heard Charles friggin Manson referred to as a hippie.. One look at that guy and you know he`s a psycho..

About a month ago I made some negative comments about the show. Flash forward and now I'm a loyal fan who eagerly awaits each weeks new episode. Sam, I'm genuinely sorry for my hostility, but it is important to mention that I was being influenced by a 3000 year old dog named Harvey.

Fun (?) fact: Charles Manson still records music. He's releasing a tetralogy called ATWA - Air Trees Water Animals, which is supposed to be his philosophy. I think so far the first two are out (on CD and vinyl). Speaking of no goodnick hippies, my favourite soundtrack, for Kenneth Anger's film "Lucifer Rising", was recorded by Bobby Beausoleil & The Freedom Orchestra in prison. Bobby was a biker drug dealer murderer with some ties to Charles Manson. Not sure about the other inmates, but damn that is one hellova great etheric psychedelic progressive album. In the metal scene there is also Jon Nödtveidt (Dissection) and Bård Faust Eithun who've killed a homosexual man each. I read about Nödveidt's case in the Swedish book "No Tears For Queers" comprising four lengthy cases of murder on homosexuals; background stories, police reports etc. I used to think the personal stuff mattered, but now I just enjoy the pieces of art/music/film as they stand on their own. But the reverse is also true, there's no way I can enjoy a piece of work that I don't find resonates with me just because the artist is infamous/notorious or just a great, colourful, all around cool person.

Lords of Chaos is another great book about the second wave black metal scene and all the connected crimes - a strange, riveting read. Didn't have room for Bobby Beausoleil in this episode, but his story is pretty fascinating. Thanks for mentioning it here. Also wasn't up on Manson's current music, really strange to hear he's still creating.

Also forgot Phil Spector. Serving jail time for murder. Manson has been recording in prison as well with just a guitar and a tape recorder. Check out on discogs for full discography (his "Live at San Quentin" album cover even looks like Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds")

4:50 Speaking of outsiders, I'd like to recommend to y'all a nice book on outsider music, mostly of the non-murdering kind. It's called Songs in the key of Z, by Irwin Chusid, a radio speaker for WFMU. Not like I'm affiliated with the guy or anything, I was just blown away by the book, and I think a fair share of This Exists fans would enjoy it as well. It's got a website as well - and CD's! www.keyofz.com/
