I'm going to play Mexican gangster rap at a party and see how many people unknowingly dance happily to it.
@IzSaru
@IzSaru 9 лет назад
Fun fact about La Bestia. Mexican politicians wondered how could they reduce the number of deaths occurring among those who climb on it. So they decided to prevent people from climbing. Did they think of a social program to improve people's lives or something really, really smart and productive? Nope... they decided to speed up the train at the places where most people climb, so as to discourage them from doing so. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is Mexican politics.

They said "a centaur who loves to party" like it's outragous and never heard of. Apart from Chiron, centaurs were depicted as and known to be party loving drunks. So that ad seemed pretty spot on.

Narco corridos are everywhere, when I go to parties or family reunions people get very hyped up, dance to it and sing along to these songs and I really get uncomfortable. Not too long ago a corrido singer was killed and it's been told that a lot of these singers are linked to Mexican mafias. I must admit that the songs are catchy and I can see why a lot of people enjoy the music. By the way I'm a new subscriber here and will be binge watching your videos now ! +This Exists Hey, Sam, not sure if you'll see this comment, but I wanted to tell you that a very similar genre of music exists in Russia/Ukraine (and probably in other post-Soviet countries and Russian speaking communities around the world). The so called "Russian chanson" or blatnyak (блатняк=crime songs) which is a story driven style telling tales and glorifying the life of a criminal in and out prison.

+Numbuh 5 Many Mexican musicians these days are too explicit. Los Canelos De Durango are a little more tame than the majority of these guys.They don't blirt it out, but they put it out there for people to connect the dots.That is what music composition is missing: Creativity. The guys today remind me of studio gangsters. They talk "cuerno de chivos" and "lanza granadas", but when shit goes bad in their concerts, they bitch out. I like Chalino and Los Tigres De Norte, and I would also add Los Incomparables De Tijuana, Los Terribles Del Norte, and Los Tucanes De Tijuana to the list of classic "Corrido-Norteno bands". Theres definately way more out there, so feel free to add to it. Saludos!

Hi! I´m from Mexico, from the capital City. After watching the first part of your video, i remembered that as a society we recently entered a discussion about "Narco-Corridos", if it was to be legal or completly banned for it being an "apology of crime". There's no actual regulation, but the discussion still continues. BTW, great video

Great episode! An addendum: Charlie & His Orchestra, created by propaganda minister Goebbels, should be mentioned. It was a swing band whose lyrics would mix typical swing stuff and spoken bits. It was aimed at US and British radio in order to demoralise the troops and citizens. It was most likely also listened by Germans since they were crazy about it (though swing music was forbidden). Two thirds of the songs were issued on CD in two volumes. A whole bunch is covers and the musicians are competent, having been in the German underground jazz scene during the 30s.

@ZombieDragQueen
@ZombieDragQueen 10 лет назад
This Exists Reports on the effectiveness of Charlie & His Orchestra as a propaganda tool are shrouded in the mist of time; that is, there aren't really any of them. The propaganda was so overt that I imagine British soldiers singing along while relaxing, smoking and drinking and having a laugh at those crazy "Fritzes" and their attempt to demoralise them. The CDs were issued by Harlequin Records who specialise in jazz, tango and Latin American music and there is one more LP with songs not featured on those releases that was published by TNA Record from Singapore. And really it's no surprise since Asia has a huge hard on for Hitler. Just search for "Soldatenkaffee", a coffee shop/bakery in Indonesia where its staff were dressed as SS-officers, Taiwanese 7-Eleven selling keychains with a cartoonish vampire-Hitler (he had fangs basically). And young subcultural Japanese cosplaying in SS-uniforms with swastikas and everything (and by cosplaying I don't mean they re-enacted a WW2 battle, they just think those uniforms with their insignias and symbols look awesome).

Hi! I'm from México, and all i have to say is that "corridos" but most likely "narco corridos" are liked by the majority. But in the other hand there are people that despises this kind of so called music. Because it just takes a little look to the lirycs and you'll notice that they are praising the ones that are killing and stealing them wich it's actually kind of stupid.

I am sure that you've heard about how politicians are now trying to outright outlaw the Confederate Flag after the shooting in the church, and I remembered your views on that particular flag and what it represents(ed?), I got to re-watch quite a few of your videos looking for it because it perfectly summed up my thoughts, but as a white New Yorker, if I say it, it's pretty much shot down instantly because I am not from the south.. So it answers your question, yes. This is still a big deal in America and it is ridiculous. Thanks again for your videos and the time and effort you put into making them. I enjoy them even though I don't relate to most of your other fans because I've never heard of most of the bands on your backdrop, nor have I heard of any of the "non-traditional" types of music that you have talked about in a few of your episodes. I am one person who has benefited a lot from all the knowledge which I have gained on your channel.

Wow, thank you for showing me this Narco-Credo music. Although unintentional, this maybe a pinnacle for comedy music. Such a jarring juxtaposition between the credo / traditional instrumental and such aggressive lyrics. Some people say that clipping and Death Grips try to "parody" hip-hop tropes, but I think NarcoCredo blows them out of the water in that regard. Instead of taking the music to the most violent extreme, it does a 180 and makes it all sound silly.

I am sure there are people that use the "state's rights" platform for those uses, but there are some people that just do not like big government having too much of a hold on states. States used to make their decisions about policies on a more, on their own foothold, and topics like decriminalization of marijuana is one of those many important policies.

Narco Corridos and Drake are my guilty pleasures. Now that I got that out of the way...The stories behind some corridos are captivating, even more so when you know permission has to be given before writing about someone. Which then begs the question, are these merely fantastical stories of guns and drugs, or is there some truth behind them? All in all, narco corridos are catchy, and with their success it is allowing for singers to make the transition to main stream Mexican media outlets more easily. Plus, they're a great way to scare white folks that pull up next to you. Lol

Jonathan Trejo That's true - I didn't even include that in the video, but the idea that the cartels grant permission to songwriters is pretty wild.

I remember my parents use to listen to these songs all the time. I never knew what they were saying and witness family members dance to this cheerful music with dark lyrics. O.O

the appeal of music can be several fold from the lyrics to the beat to the delivery and anything can be said in between all of those and the population will suck it up. if you put a good beat to a song like "move bitch (get out the way)" then people will listen to it.

In The Salmon of Doubt, a collection of short articles by Douglas Adams and an unfinished Dirk Gently novel from which the book gets its title, Adams writes about how well written he thought a 007 novel was. Any serious critic of literature would not bother reading a 007 novel for the same reason they wouldn't bother reading a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book, these things tend to be considered 'trashy' literature. It's worth mentioning at this point that Kurt Vonnegut got started by sending short stories to 'trashy' magazines just to pay the bills. What I'm getting at is what people mean when they say 'art' depends largely on how pretentious they are. Art derives from an old word that has sadly fallen out of fashion: 'Artisan'. An artisan is an expert times five. You may have heard it takes ten years to become an expert? Well, an artisan is presumably someone with a lifelong dedication to their craft who likely had a similarly dedicated teacher. All that being said: I imagine heads of states would be able to find, manage and produce the best artisans in the world. It seems strange to ask 'Would you listen to a song that's intentionally designed to be propaganda?'. What, like you mean "Power to the People" and "Give Peace a Chance" by John Lennon? He admitted freely these were propaganda, and then added 'All You Need is Love' to the list when being interviewed in the seventies. Finally, Casablanca, an anti-axis propaganda film celebrated as one of the greatest cultural achievements of the last century. 'Art' and 'propaganda' are not mutually incompatible. This much seems so obvious to me but it's an idea that just won't go away. The same goes for placement advertising (speaking of Breaking Bad).

I think there is a certain credence to be given to this music. It's coming from a culture and way of life that I myself can't even begin to fathom. What's part of the social normative for one culture can be completely backwards and rejected as degenerate by another. Being Canadian myself, I've never had to deal with a culture dominated by gang culture and strict catholic heteronormative upbringings, and to me this seems extreme and unconscionable, but I grew up between suburbs and trailer parks in Ontario. Yes it's violent and extreme, but is not a lot of street rap genre music also as violent? They just portray a different antagonist.

Josh Davidson I totally agree. I think the parallel to the panic over gangsta rap, which was depicting a very specific experience in one part of the world, is useful.
