Hi. I have a mystery for you. Have you seen 1960s made movie Anqelika de marquise de anges movie starring Michele Mercer and Robert Hossein? In the scene where Joffrey de peyrac gives his wife Anqelika a golden emerald diamond necklace, i would like to know more about the jewelry. I have tried to find out about it myself but i have not getting anywhere and i would like to have some help finding out if the necklace still exists, was it made specifically in that movie and who designed it and how much it is worth today? You probably have more connections to get the information than me. The reason i want to know about it is that the necklace is so stunning and beautiful that i want to know more about it. And the Anqelika series is one of my favorite period movies all time so can you help me💐💐🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

The idea that people shouldn’t care about “a dress they didn’t even know existed before” is so….baffling to me? Like, if I found out a historical building I’d never heard of burned down, I’d feel upset. If I found out the work of some artist whose name I’d never heard before got trashed, I’d feel upset. I don’t have to have a deep understanding of the history and importance of something and have it in my life before to understand that it’s important and feel outrage at its destruction. The fact that something historically significant and completely irreplaceable was irreversibly damaged-either through ignorance, carelessness, greed, or deliberate malice, it doesn’t matter-is enough for me to be upset.

@whoreforlore4878

It also just compeltely shits over people who took the time and effort to preserve the dress. Take a restoration artist who spends hours to restore a historical piece of art. The fact that all it takes is for someone rich enough to buy it, alter it, and present it to the public knowing it can permanently damage the piece, is completely disrespectful. The people who make it their career to research and restore historical pieces have their efforts being completely shat on but because the pieces concern a section of history people don't care about, it all doesn't matter in the end. Destroy a historical statue? Burn a painting? That's wrong. But destroy a dress of significance? Doesn't matter. And not too long ago people were getting upset over people taking down statues of racist figures. The absolute inconsistency just because they don't respect ALL of history, only parts of it.

My biggest problem is with this fetishization of Marilyn that we have in popular media. Kim Kardashian went to the lengths of wearing the actual dress for the red carpet, even though a. it did not fit her and b. it did not fit the theme. The dress was not made for anyone else, it was made for Marilyn. Bob Mackie, who designed the dress, made it for Marilyn in her image. the fabric matched her skin tone, which made it all the more scandalous, it gave the impression that Marilyn was naked, dripping in diamonds. If we look at the history of who Marilyn Monroe was, and what the dress meant, not just for her, but for her image as well, it's horrific that we have allowed the dress to be commercialized in such a manner. Everyone is at fault here-Ripley's, who lent the dress to Kim (also why the fuck is that dress at Ripley's Believe it or not, instead of a costume museum), Kim K, who wore the dress, despite knowing that it was a fragile historical piece, Anna Wintour, who personally oversees every costume people wear at the Met Gala, and most of all, us, who have reduced the image of a wonderful human being and an equally wonderful actress to this public circus.

You are right on point. I have been talking about these two points too here online and to people face-face. The moment I saw her in the dress, I knew it was not to honour anyone's memory. It was for self-advertisement [KK] and promotion for Ripley's museum. She got it. The damage is done. What else can we do for future generations? American history is constantly being destroyed by unrestrained capitalism, greed, etc. Our oldest cathedrals (of which there are few), torn down for super malls that no one wants. Our oldest buildings torn down for apartment complexes that no one can afford during a time when the population isn't even growing much. Homes from 1800s-1960s being demolished and replaced with bland, stale, minimalist housing complexes with no yard space, no view and no originality. Tik tokers find 1800s clothes and cut them up to "repurpose" them into "chic" fashion and then they never wear them again. RU-vidrs too. I saw a youtuber SAND OFF THE ORIGINAL GRAIN AND SIGNATURE on a 150 year old cabinet that she then painted lime green. It no longer looked original, it looked like something bought at ikea. She could have just done so but instead she had to destroy a historical item.

As a person who's never watched a single Marilyn Monroe movie, this still makes me mad. Marilyn Monroe is an American icon, a worldwide icon (whether you care about her or not), and as such, a piece of history. Some may argue that the movies aren't that important to history, but entertainment is one of the best ways to showcase what life was like during that time. Do we toss out copies of Shakespeare's First Folio because his plays were hundreds of years ago, and "just plays?" _Absolutely_ not. Even something like a dress some actress wore for some movie has historical value, and should be treated with care.

As an archaeologist, the part about how fashion history is devalued for being a mostly feminine field is so true. But i think especially stuff like this, where the garment was specifically a womans, and she was "just" a hollywood actress, and the piece is not particularly old (speaking from my perspective as the artifacts I deal with are several thousand years old). I can just imagine someone trying to borrow Tutankhamun golden deathmask - they wouldnt just be laughed out of the museum, they would be forcibly kicked out (as they should), because the piece is old, famous, worn by a man, a PHARAO no less. Arguably something like a 3000 year old piece of greek pottery or a roman statue are more durable than this dress, and even if chips fall off, these can be glued back on, but those would NEVER get rented out to be paraded around as an accessory to a rich person because theyre "respected" artifacts. The hypocrisy sucks because imo all historical artifacts should be treated with the same amount of respect and care, regardless of how old they are or who they belonged to. Historical clothing is such a rare and beautiful type of artifact and it sucks that we dont have more of them, and now apparently we dont even respect the ones we do have

The thought is so absurd that it's just puzzling to see how they actually think they're coming across as being logical.

To be fair, some people just don't care about historical preservation at all. I remember getting into a debate with someone after Notre Dame burned down because he was saying that people shouldn't care about some building burning down when there's forests burning in South America. Clearly this played into both not caring about historical preservation and the idea of only caring about one issue at a time but I was particularly upset as a French person to have the history and symbolism of Notre Dame boiled down to "just a building" simply because HE wasn't interested in it. I do think that a portion of the people who are mad that anyone cares about the dress are absolutely playing into sexist ideas though, I'm just saying some people don't care no matter what it is. IMO this is an extension of people not understanding the value art (in any form) plays in our society. As if caring about anything aside from the bare necessities of survival is somehow trivial.

It’s frustrating that so many people care so little about preserving irreplaceable pieces of history, and the idea that you can’t care about preserving historical things because there are other issues in the world is especially awful. It’s entirely possible to care about and contribute to multiple issues at a time, and honestly what is the point of a life lived caring only about basic necessities?

I think the thing that gets me about the dress is that it was worn and damaged at an event meant to help fund the Costume department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. So. The whole point of the event is the preservation of fashion and garment history. They didn't just damage an historic garment, or disrespect the wishes of that garment's owner, but they did so, supposedly in service of... preserving historic garments, and the memories of the people who wore them. Also, the argument that 'you're mad but you didn't know about the dress until x months ago' is... a bad take. We sometimes don't know about whole ass species of animals until they're extinct, or we've got literally one individual, but that doesn't mean we can't be mad about it. Her preparing for this event was very strange considering she isn't new to the met gala. Like she has the resources and people to help her, and they failed big time. Other than shock value, why wear an expensive dress that you can't even pull off? She had to have known she didn't look great in it.

I didn't even know it was THE dress at first, not just because of the skin tone mismatch, but because the silhouette was so different on a body it wasn't custom-made for. The way it hugged Marilyn's body was a big part of the naked illusion- even if KK wore the exact same silhouette matched to her skin tone, it wouldn't look quite right. Britney Spears got the effect spot-on in her Toxic video.

Right, I think Kim K wore skims (her brand of shapewear) under it when the whole point is that the gossamer fabric clings to your naked body and makes you look like you're dressed in floating crystals. You're supposed to kinda jiggle under it. But Kim had to squeeze everything in to get it on and her body is so modified anyway that the allure of the nude female form under the gown is lost.

The “Gala” is a fundraiser for the Met’s “Costume Institute”. they are ALL about the conservation of historic dress and fashion. They have a huge collection with items from the 15th Century to the present day, each requiring expert conservation and a dedicated team of conservators and curators etcetera. The key word here is “conservation”. I’m sure that besides the celebrity guests, they would have invited many people involved in the fields of conservation of historic garments and curation of historic fashion collections, from all over the world, both public and private. Experts in their particular field. I can only imagine how these guests felt and reacted when they saw this particular historic fashion item being worn. I’m absolutely dumbfounded that this was even allowed to happen. I’m not sure, but I’m assuming that outfit and designer information is submitted prior to the event - but I’m not sure about this. I also sadly suspect that a large donation was involved. The whole thing just blows my mind. She could have had a beautiful replica (that fitted perfectly) created and sewn for her by a local crafts person, worn that all night and given that artist some exposure.

I was not happy with Kim wearing the dress. One thing that annoyed me was that most people who asked my opinion on it would respond with ‘you didn’t know it existed before this’. EXCUUUUUSE ME!? I have extensively studied historical fashion, and plan on working in that field, but even more so, I’ve known about Marilyn for years. I have scrapbooks of her photos, all her movies on DVD, books, merchandise of all kind, CDs, even a drawing of her that took me months to complete, most of my coursework focusing on her, wearing clothes reminiscent of her era. Of course I knew it was a thing, and I remember hearing that Marilyn herself said that she didn’t want it to be worn at any other time, by anyone else. It was made specifically for her, it was made to match her skin tone so she would have that naked effect, she was literally sewn into the dress. It was worn during one of the most famous moments in pop culture history. It’s sad to see a gown I love be tarnished like that, especially one that holds so much memory, and even worse, it’s another example of how people exploit Marilyn’s image, taking her things just to not even fit in the theme. Kim even said she stopped eating for a while to fit in the dress. This really did not help anyone, and now Marilyn’s memory is being taken away, something she worked so hard for.

Sometimes respect to historical heritage is a huge problem when you have a whole city centre of mostly XVIII century and sometimes XIX century bulidings. Like Saint-Petersburg. You can't turn it into a museum - that's a whole city! Literally a whole capital bulit in XVIII century in the middle of nowhere, you can walk for an hour straight in any direction given counting baroque, classic, empire and sometimes modern bulidings, nothing younger than 100 y.o. only some of the baroque palaces are museums (more than 20 big museums, mostly former palaces), everything else is fully operating city with several millions of people. Houses are flats, shops and even sometimes offices, churches are churches. You can't use half of them or use it well, they stand in a bad climate through several wars, there are crumbling bricks, cracks, plumbing problems, planning mess, molds etc. High storeys of most of them are already uninhabitable. You can't demolish them - they're all precious historical heritage all together, as being planned as one piece. A 387 square kilometers - large heritage site. Fasadism is utilised, but it's half a measure, both results in the destruction of the historical building and doesn't make something useful as the climate is VERY bad for construction materials (due to the constant shifts around the freeze, strong winds and high humidity) and the results of fasadism start decaying fast... In places the facade is stuck to the concrete box.

@@acmulhern these are 300 years old brick buildings (not stone, brick) in an area that historically was exposed to floods and bombshells. The youngest bulidings are 120-140 years old or so I think, but most of them are over 200. Restore them better is better said then done. There's 357 square kilometers of them in one place. Imagine how expensive it is to maintain them ALL? Trillions of dollars. Even a very big country can't afford that. When you're restoring one or two at a time all the rest start new cracks again (because water gets into cracks, freezes and makes it worse.) I've been to there several times, there are always restoration works on numerous bulidings, especially in the summer and mainly focused on the most valuable ones. That's just not enough. The problem also is the 300 y.o. bricks sometimes don't want to keep the shape and integrity of a brick, they decay and turn into pieces. They're not strong enough anymore to hold all the storeys above. Steel poles are installed to hold the buliding together... It's more comparable to Venice, but in a much worse climate and a bit less tourists. They have the same problems in Venice. I know that things about brick building, my school (grammar school) was a 140.yo. brick building, it's beautiful with all that columns, the walls are 80 cm thick, it's generally too hot with modern heating (but very good when it's below -20 and cool in the summer when the heating is off), the tall windows and shelves under them are stunning overall, but needs a lot of expensive restoration done regularly to continue functioning properly. And of course the body positivity movement is jumping on this as an opportunity to shame us for "body shaming" Kim k. It literally has nothing to do with that. She knew that dress would not fit her, yet she broke it to try to make it fit her body. I don't care whose dress it was originally, you do not damage a priceless, one of a kind item just because you really want to wear it. I don't care if you're a size 0 or a size 30. You do not do that!

I just realized the dress would’ve at least matched her skin tone if she hadn’t fake tanned. Cuz it was made to give the nude impression. Wearing it like she did didn’t even match her skin and the hair also looked out of place

A guitar museum lent a 1870s guitar for a film and kurt Russell unknowingly smashed it. The thing is, i dont see the value in any of this other than publicity. Why not just wear the replica? Were really good at making those, even warts and all. The Rosetta stone actually has a carefully crafted replica on display in the museum its housed. Unlike the real thing that is under glass, the replica is in the open and people can actually touch it, its to scale and incredibly well replicated. They have to replace it every couple of years because of all the wear, but the thing is, its actually much more enjoyable this way. People can interact wat better with it. Theres a whole replica CAVE in france, based on one that had some very old cave paintings, because if the original is entered too many times, history has shown from similar caves, the art is damaged. Not even by touching, just external mold coming in and stuff. The replica they made is created specifically in such a way to give the same feeling of being underground, the art is viewed the same way. And i really dont think it matters in these cases. Having her wear the real dress was worse than a replica that would have fit nicely (and they did that anyway) its just for the purpose of going "look i touched thus priceless thing". There are objects out there that actually have an issue of not being able to be enjoyed just by looking. The VandA has a program for ceramic artists to come and handle parts of the collection. As a ceramic artist i understand this. Mugs and pots are objects made to be handled, when we make them, we think about a lot of things you wouldnt expect. The weight, the fit in your hands, how it feels against your skin, how slippery it is, how a rim feels on your lip, even the thickness of the wall and how it will feel after a mug is full of hot tea. We talk about a pot not having a front and a back and a thousand little other things that really do matter to us as ceramicists and can ONLY be experienced by handling the piece. But this isnt that. There isnt anything extra to be gained by wearing the original rather than the replica. It fits worse, you can age a replica to look the same. It doesnt even feel like the way it did when Marilyn wore it, if thats what youre in to. I personally hadn't heard of this dress and dont care about it, but i get the indignation of ruining a historical object for no other reason than bragging rights. If she wanted to make a statement about history, wearing a replica and talking about how it was constructed with the techniques of the period when it was made for example, would have had much the same effect of bringing attention to it. But the statement she wanted to make wasnt "look at this amazing piece of American fashion and celebrity history", it was "look at me im Kim Kardashian, let me do a bunch of pointless tasteless shit with my money so people talk about me"

She also said that “no one wants to work anymore”, implying that poor people are lazy and that’s why we’re poor, which brings on the whole myth of poor people deserving to be poor. As a billionaire. One of the richest people in the world, playing into harmful myths about money and who deserves what treatment. And yes, it was read into, but a lot of philosophy has already been done about meritocracy and bootstraps, and the working hard rags to riches mythology of the modern day, and how each implication leads on from the last, as well as how harmful it all is. My point being, you can justify animosity toward her for more than just this one thing! There was also her bragging about flying her entire family to a private island for a birthday party in the middle of a pandemic. So many reasons to dislike that woman, really.

The idea that "its just a dress who cares" sentiment is so ignorant to the importance of preserving history, of course many people are upset regardless if they were fans of Marilyn or not. You don't need to live in St. Petersburg to cringe at the loss of the Amber Room during WW2, or a fan of a certain historical artist to be upset about their lost art. The fact that we were able to maintain something that could have been lost to time but we get the chance to still view it in modern day is beautiful and I feel that these type of people dont understand that there are people who find this stuff fascinating.

It’s like saying nobody knew about the suit Jackie wore the day JFK was assassinated. They might not have known the importance of the suit itself (hugely important, she refused to take it off and even appeared next to LBJ getting sworn in on the plane while still wearing it). But they sure as sugar knew about the historical event and it’s importance!

Dudes that's why you need communism. In the Soviet Union, artifacts stayed at the museums mostly, they could be used for something (e.g. antique furniture standing on the set for a period drama without any stress, permitted by the conservationists) - but nothing that could damage them. Culture is public property. There were no celebrity monetizing gossip, gossip wasn't considered news...

@@annasolovyeva1013 No... that's not why we need communism. I hope hope this is a joke but in we not, there are a lot of reasons why we fucking don't need communism, but specifically how museums work is the first thing. Then things like people's culture that is specific to them would be taken from them. Natives wouldn't be allowed to own their cultures. Museums dedicated to collections of things like Racism wouldn't exist due to the fact that it doesn't make the government look good. You do know in communist China that the government controls all artifacts, and destroys shit, right? Things that don't fit the historical narrative they tell get destroyed or hidden. Especially if it's about recently passed (in the last 100 years) political figures) Second of all, a ton of museums are based on a LENDING system. People who've owned things in their families for generations often lend things to museums for display. So, tell me, are you just going to let all these people keep their family valuables, or are they the government property now? Oh, grandma's wedding dress is being shown at the local museum for fashion appreciation, and suddenly, grandma's dress is the governments now. I mean, it's insulting to think this way. Yeah, certain artifacts are apart of the public and should never be taken away, and that's in the law dude, but you can't just say let the government own everything. They can't. It's impossible. If Marilyn had kids, they'd be entitled to her clothes. What? Are you going to have the government come rip the fabric from these fake kids hands because their mom is famous? No. That's not how it works. And antique furniture? Don't make me laugh. Do you know how much of that exists now? Too much to be in a museum. And too much that's worthless. You also seem to ignore the very blatant fact that the Soviets were not lovers of history and art. They destroy thousands of royal artifacts. So much shit that can never be retrieved because they didn't like someone (AND GUESS WHAT POINT THAT RELATES TO). You would never see any of these artifacts because your precious government would have destroyed them to make a point. Six of the faberge eggs, for example, are still fucking lost. And guess what? The rest didn't even stay in Russia after the revolution. They were sold. So don't talk about the museums when they sold their own culture. I could literally sit here and go on all day about the disrespect the Soviets had for the culture of their people, but I won't, because either you're a troll or a blind-sided idealist who doesn't understand what it means to be forced on an island to eat your neighbors.

@@maddiewhatever441 And yes, communism is here not in the sence that historical and cultural heritage is the humanity's property from a certain point. Note that it touches only things over a century old unless they have documented historical significance. Not a single person's. not of the sence soviet union (it's marxism-leninism, it tried to reach real communism, but wasn't even close. They - soviet communists, especially in the 1950s-70s were still right in many things today's society has problems with. Recycling to breeding dogs to race problems to selebrity ghossip). antique furniture... Not much in my country - most of it was destroyed through civil or WWII wars. I was talking about early XIX century furniture here - you are VERY unlikely to find a chair 200 years old in a good conservation state in Russia. It's museum exclusive, i've never seen it out of there. There's plenty of vintage furniture, but no real antiques. Everything pre-WWII is rare and almost 'pre Great Flood'. As for inheriting something - you can have it unless it needs specific conditions to be conserved (e.g. an old book to be stored in controlled humidity and temperature environment. It can also formally belong to you, but may be stored in museum only, with a tag "N's donation". ). Have something very old and fragile - get it to your local museum, they could take care about it. I personally took several very old religious books to my local museum, I'm not attached emotionally to any of them, and now they're safe. The oldest thing I own are WWII medals, they're not one of a kind, they don't have any conservation issues, they're not big, they're ok residing in a box on my bookshelf, they have emotional value and meaning to me, I'm not going to destroy them - it means they can stay with me. Generally what the communists have left us is nearly a shinto-like approach to antiques. There are local museums in every district, and accepting antiques from people, studying and conserving them is a part of their job. We are taught that very old things should be residing peacefully in the museums.

Does that mean rich people should just get a pass to destroy irreplaceable pieces of history? NO!! I would say the two arguments are much more connected than people want to admit. I've never understood the sort of the people who try to invalidate other people caring about something, that meme at 11:47 absolutely hits the nail on the head. I can be concerned about _many_ things, ranging from the most trivial first world gripe to the most abject and harrowing sources of existential despair - and every other bit of searing injustice, mild-to-major anxiety or personal bugbear between those two extremes. When did we collectively decide that we're incapable of caring (or even not caring) about many different things, in different degrees, for different reasons? I might worry about the wellbeing of my widowed younger sister and her two children, the increasing frailty of my elderly parents, the mental state of my beleaguered older brother and his wife caring for two teenage neurodivergent daughters who are both going through a rather tough time. These are things I'm palpably worried about on a daily basis. But you're damn right I'm going to conceptually pissed off with Kim Kardashian being allowed to fuck up an antique for her own self-aggrandizement! Clearly not to same degree as immediate familial problems, but I can still be cheesed off by many things I'm not directly affected by. Same way I can get a bee in my bonnet about Boris Johnson's total lack of accountability in office, or that Jeff Bee-Sauce twat going to space whilst his wage slaves grift the mill of his horrible company, or even gaze in incredulous nihilistic horror upon the so-called "gun debate" or the pro-life/pro-choice schism in America - aka normal people asking for the most basic of legal measures and rights VS. a revanchist death cult. Something doesn't need to directly affect me for me to care in whatever degree. My lily-white heterosexual man ass isn't LGBT, but I still get furious about homophobia and transphobia - neither of which _directly_ affect me. My offensively atheistic world-weary view isn't religious either, but I still find attacks against religious minorities by religious extremists equally grotesque. And you can toss racism, misogyny and ableism onto that hate speech spewing bonfire too. Who in their right mind isn't angry about this stuff? Feeling like you're helpless to do something about these injustices, or dismissing their validity because of the greater existential terrors of climate change, disease, famine, war, etc, is the weirdest response to folks anger at these things.
