King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's 21st album, "Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava", has seven tracks and each one makes use of one of the seven modes of the major scale! So today we're going to work our way through this track list and examine how King Gizzard utilised each mode's distinctive flavour.
The outro music to this video is my track "The Longest March" which you can hear in full on Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/0wKKJ... 🎶

@DavidBennettPiano Dear David, I have a question regarding Ice Five (Dorian). I understand that you wanted to highlight the difference between the natural minor and dorian scale, but isn't interpreting the song in the 'parent key' of Bb really confusing? If we see it as being in F (so G dorian) we would simply have a ii - iii and have no need to raise the b5 of the vii chord. We would also have one accidental less in the key signature. Why did you interpret it this way?

The most fantastic thing about KG&LW is that, despite their ginormous output and despite their ability to go full-on theoretical with albums like this (Or Microtonal Banana or Polygondwanaland), their songs are still great to listen to, earworms even, and they still convey messages. If you had no idea that this record goes through all the modes, and were just listening it for the songs, the lyrics, the feel, the soundscapes, it's still a great, rewarding listen - and not, what it easily could have become, a boring contrived lesson in music theory. My fave is Butterfly 3000 which, to me, is like pulling Kraftwerk into the Gizzverse.

Kinda, they have some albums with strong music theory background, like the album from this video, or "changes", where the whole album is based limiting all the harmony to only two key changes and have some kind of hypnotic synth jazz pop sound. Other interesting thing are the microtonal albums trilogy, very interesting musically. But even more interesting than the music theory themed albums, are their concept driven releases, each album is unique trying something new.

I’ve never understood the “Nobody plays in Locrian” thing. I did it, it was nothing, like any mode. You tell the bass player to play B-roots and everybody else plays in C-Major and occasionally just pretend that B is the tonic. 😊

It's not necessary for the tonic chord of Locrian to be diminished since it can also be a minor 7 flat 5 chord, also known as a half-diminished chord. That said, when it comes to Locrian, it's often best to embrace its dissonance and weirdness rather than try to mask it.

@@TityretupatulaeNow why do you and @unknown6390 feel the need to try and convince everyone that this band is terrible and unimpressive? If you, personally, don't like it, that's fine. But here's the thing, you can just say _that_ instead! It's so easy! Sure it's hippie music, often listened to by hippies, but they clearly know what they're doing and can write a great song. Again, if they're not your thing, fine by me, but just say that and stop trying to make people feel bad for enjoying something! Unless you're both just doing this to garner attention or reactions. In that case, here you go!

Question: Why instead of using g min/Bflat maj key signatures with a raised E to an E natural, we don't use F major key signature? G dorian is the second mode of the F maj/ionian so its more reasonable and we don't have to raise anything p.s. its the same with D phrygian...using B flat maj key sig. is better than F maj key sig. , innit?

I love this band. I'm not too knowledgeable about music theory (getting more knowledgeable thanks to David Bennet!), but I appreciate King Gizz giving us a good sounding example of each mode. I get people often aren't into this, calling it boring or uninteresting, but I am the exact opposite, I find this album captivating and interesting. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of modern radio pop music. I still like The Beatles, but they're from the 60s, not really modern.

Locrian is one of those scales that exist in theory but not in reality. Doing Am7(omit5) is still Am7, the 5 is actually heard through the harmonics. The use of the Eb here is obviously ornamental. I would try to use an Eb chord maybe...

So I have seen this before and I am always a bit perplexed by this: so whenever you have a non-Ionian or non-Aeolian scale/mode you still seem to have the same fixed accidentals as the Ionian or Aeolian counterpart. So the G dorian example has two flats and the D phrgian has one flat whereas whenever I play things notated and in these modes a G dorian would have only one flat and D phrygian would have two flats. Now interestingly, the F lydian example had no accidental but D mixolydian has two sharps instead of one and A locrian has no accidentals instead of two flats. Although I see what they did there by omitting the 5 in that A(di)m chord. :) So what gives? For me, the natural thing would be to indicate G mixolydian with no accidentals, C# phrygian with 3 sharps, C dorian with two flats etc. So again, what gives?

@@weepingscorpion8739 It’s more than sus, though. The b5 is literally the defining/signature scale degree of Locrian. About the Locrian mode - did they just "cheat" by leaving the flat5 out? I think they did a bit. Also you talk about the one needs to be "resolved or resolving chord". No it does not. In my mind, music does not need to resolve into anything. It is ok if it resolves, but it doesn't have to. Or am I just too dumb to understand this "claim"?

I find that writing in any mode of the diatonic scale other than Ionian (including, to some degree, even aeolian), ends up being a process of resistance and avoidance of the inexorable gravity of the Ionian mode - avoiding making any move that the Ionian note/chord will take as an opportunity to assert itself as the new tonic. Ionian is the schoolyard bully of modes. It doesn’t play well with the other children, and given an inch it will barge in and assert itself to be in charge. The moment that Ionian chord arrives, or even its fifth with that Ionian leading tone in it, it WANTS to be the tonic so badly you have to consciously fight against it. Even Aeolian will happily give you an A section that’s fairly stable in its minor tonality, but as soon as you develop it further into a B section, the temptation to make a move that will end up finding you flipped into the relative major is something you need to consciously avoid if you want it to remain in its original mode.

@prepcoin_nl4362 6 месяцев назад
Starting out, it can certainly feel that way. But with a bit of practice, it's not actually very difficult to stay in any diatonic (or chromatically altered diatonic) mode. The main problem is that people tend to look at writing in terms of chord progressions and they try to apply the same stock chord progressions they learn in Ionian/major to any mode only to find it doesn't work. There are stock chord progressions that you can memorize for every diatonic mode, but it's honestly better just to think it terms of melodic tendencies. The biggest tendency to look out are minor second motions. Obviously, we know this as 'leading tone tendencies' for the major scale but they work for any mode. So for example, you can easily stay grounded in Phyrgian with a lot of bii - I motions. The biimaj7 - i(min7) is also quite a common chord progression for this reason. Another is the #iv - V motion over the tonic in Lydian, which is also quite strong. In general, emphasizing minor second motions into a chord tone of the tonic (or a consonant-ish chord on I) is an easy and effective way to stay in any mode. A lot of working with modes is learning to think linearly rather than vertically and just creating vertical harmonies that emphasize these strong melodic characteristics of modes.
