Whoa there! Im a fan as much as anybody (been through the series a couple dozen times) and idk if i can agree with that statement. I think Seinfeld is #1. Its even referenced in koth at least a couple times. During the pilot or first few episodes and then again when hank finds out he wasn't born in texas. Damn i hope those reboot rumors bear fruit.
The thing about KoTH that is so great, is if you grew up in Texas, we all knew someone like these people. I swear to God, All-mighty, my neighbor across the street was Hank Hill, but looked and even dressed like Bill (yes, he wore that damn jeans and wifebeater shirt EVERYDAY too). He was also obsessed with lawn care, he would actually mow everyone's lawn on the street for free. At night, he and his buddies would stand outside drinking beer. Then king of the hill came out and blew my mind.
I think that it not only applies to texas, but other southern states as well. for example, my dad's friend Jeff sounds and looks a lot like dale, some of my teachers remind me of peggy, etc.
What makes Mike great is he doesnt treat these characters badly, in someone elses hands they would be making fun of and belittling the hills, instead he creates affection and heart
@@Mitchisable Peggy makes me hate her at times but I wouldn’t have her any other way... except for the episode about Bobby’s turkey. I’ll never forgive her for Bobby’s turkey.
I would say it's because he satirizes all aspects of the human experience. Regardless of any idpol category, he aims to have his world relatable to as many people as possible.
As someone who was born and raised in rural Texas, I can tell you that nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever come close to being as accurate as King of the Hill.
2 shows saved me from depression at 2 different stages of my young life...in 2008 it was family guy and in 2011 it was king of the hill...one for comedy one for relaxation and those feels...family guy was just funny when i needed to laugh...i just like how king of the hill makes you feel by the end of a good ep like when dale is happy hugging his wife or hank and ladybird bonded or khan and hank...it just feels good...
Peter Griffin ugly awful character designs, terrible animation that hasn't improved much despite all the years it's been on air and all the money it's made, incredibly heartless, and relies on the three most bottom of the barrel easy humor possible: shock, random, and reference.
I always felt silly being a grown man fan of a cartoon. When I see how much thought and creativity that goes into it, I feel less guilty for the pleasure .... Thank you Mike Judge and your talented team .....
@Paul Martin You’re not alone. Still a fan of the show too as I am THE SIMPSONS from 1989 - 2007, SPITTING IMAGE, FAMILY GUY, SPACE GHOST COAST TO COAST, DEXTER’S LABORATORY, JOHNNY BRAVO, etc.
this show first aired when I was 12 years old. By this point, I'd been raised on MTV during summer vacations, so Beavis and Butt-head had been around for a few years, and their old neighbor was my first introduction to Hank Hill. Once KOTH aired, I already felt like I'd been acquainted with Hank, but as a pre-teen I related more to Bobby in those days. Now, I'm 37, and my wife and I watch KOTH in the evenings and it's like watching the show all over again for the first time. My ability to relate to Hank, his friends, being a homeowner with a yard that needs mowing... ALL of it has come full circle, further solidifying my love for this show. The writers really crafted something special with this series, and most of today's entertainment fall short of the creative genius' of Mike Judge and Greg Daniels.. The clever quips, one liners, and outrageous-yet-completely-common everyday shenanigans the Arlen gang finds themselves in will forever be one of my all time favorite shows. I'm really glad I got to grow up in the times I did. "It's just got'dang quality entertainment, I tell you whhat. Dammit Bobbeh!"
Seth Macfarlane is a douchebag... and he copies a lot of shit from other shows. "faster than the speed of love" copied from King of the Hill, "finger bang" copied from South Park
These were our neighbors, our local restaurants, how the towns were ran, how school was looked at. Seeing the towns i go to, the schools i went to and played against, the same stories I was told as a kid. This was central Texas down to the even the weather. Greatest show ever.
I love how he casually says "this movie Office Space" as if it's just some throwaway line and not one of the most iconic comedies of the past 30 years. I know this interview is from years ago, but it's funny how much longevity he's had.
Daniels talking about Judge's style being based on observing real life is spot on when it comes to KOTH. The writing absolutely blows me away because of just how well Judge captures and portrays all these nuances you encounter in people/situations in southern small-town USA. Only someone who's lived it and observed it as much as Judge clearly has could've written King of the Hill. I hope we get that long-rumored reboot sometime in the future.
I'm pretty confident in stating Mike Judge is my favorite cartoonist. Even his live action films are awesome. Beavis and Butthead was a fucking masterful piece of art, as was King Of The Hill. I love the way he thinks and works, and the way he presents his interpretation of reality and of society. This guy is the shit.
The thing I appreciate about koth is that it takes it's plots seriously like other shows they'll joke about it but the concepts are really like something that would happen in real life it can make you relate and give you something still funny
Pamela Adlon won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for playing various characters in Bobby Goes Nuts. She's the only actress in the series to have won one.
Dale is supposed to look like Johnny Hardwick, but I agree Mike looks like Dale (a handsome version) There's a RU-vid clip of him on Conan Obrien. He walked into the set and I swear to God it was Dale coming out. First time I ever noticed the similarity
What I always found so brilliant about koth was that he was able to make it funny without it being filthy. I’m not a prude, I think Family Guy is funny but McFarlain goes for shock. I think it takes more talent to be funny without being overly crude. All the characters were quirky and great. God, I miss that show!
Show was awesome as a kid. Exciting opening music funny characters different from how i grew up. As an adult rewatching it. Definitely love and appreciate it much more. It aged so well.
He dated my aunt during the Beavis and Butthead days which at the time I was just 9yrs old!.. He was a really nice guy honestly and I wish they had stayed together!. He used to do all the voices for me and I would laugh non stop at it mainly because I didn't get it but still lol. So if him doing all those voices helped him in any way I'm so glad because it made me really want to be a voice over actor myself who had half the talent he's got!. So Mr. Judge thanks for sharing your world with me and teaching me a little bit about the voice over community!.. Bring back King of the Hill because you really have plenty of material to keep it funny and give those other animation shows a run for their money especially nowadays!. Thanks again Mike and I miss hearing all those voices first hand they really made my childhood memories hilarious and worth remembering!. 🙏🙏🙏
The reason they actually ended the show was because Brittany Murphy had passed away. There is a dedication to her at the end of the last episode. Mike Judge basically said, we can't do the show without LuAnn. So, it was over.
A lot of people don't like King of the Hill but it's one of my favorite shows. In my opinion it's a very subtle and acquired humor that most people can't be bothered to take the time to enjoy
How can you say a lot of people don't like it when it went 13 seasons (that proves that quite a few people liked it a lot and watched it) and it's still on reruns and Hulu. Clearly it's a pretty beloved show.
I LOVE YOU MIKE!!! You were a huge part of me and my sisters childhood both bevis and butthead and later king of the hill, your still a huge part in my life i watch you king of the hill every night , please bring it back.
This is what the making of * almost every* t.v show used to be like Those people took their job seriously and did the work that needed to be done. Even back further they used to hire an actual "native of that world" paid him to tell of the culture...
KOTH is an adult cartoon for a reason, it is simply not interesting enough for younger kids, not because it is bombarded by dirty jokes like south park.
Been watching KotH every night for months now lol. I smoke a bowl, watch some episodes, and im out like a light (I typically have terrible sleep issues)
Mike's regular voice is just eloquent Boomhaur. It's weird how funny I find his regular speaking when picturing Boomhour just talking to Fox execs as a normal dude.
I watched this as a kid for a long time but didnt fully become engrossed with it cuz i didnt understand it. Im watching episodes now and realize koth is probably the most live action- type of cartoon and it's a breath of fresh air
I really enjoy the subtlety in King of the Hill‘s humor- Hank having lifelong aspirations to be a propane salesman, his son deviating so much from typical boy hood, The wife of a propane salesman branding herself as an intellectual elite. This is all already so funny. By contrast, the elements introduced in the rewrites have always stood out to me and it makes sense to find out they weren’t part of judges original idea for the show. He said these characters were introduced to balance out hanks “stick in the mud” attitude, I guess you might call it, but honestly I’ve always felt like his wife, son, and neighbors already already serve to develop him as a character so well already. I definitely tune out more when episodes center around Luanne or cotton or when dale goes off the deep end. Just seems so wacky in comparison
King of the hill was the best show of the nineties.. Incredible writing, fantastic characters and brilliant actors.. A reboot to adress today's issues would be epic
I have lived in Texas my entire life and I can attest I have met every single one of the KoTH characters at some point. Even boomhaur. The show is hilariously accurate.
A show I think generally every viewer would love, but many never gave it a chance. I have always advocated for the show and I think it is fair to say I have turned on a good many to it’s greatness.
Could you imagine being married to that woman who does Bobby's voice for the show? I mean, just imagine you're her husband and an intimate moment in bed, at night with the lights off - and you hear 'Bobby Hill's' voice telling you to be gentle -NOOOoooooo!!!!!!!!
I didn't like KOTH when it first came out but years later as I got older and had my own family and experience in life I finally watched an episode and liked it and then I was a huge fan because I could actually relate to the show and knew many friends and people I knew that resembled the characters etc. as it was a more realistic show so I was sold. To this day I'm a huge fan and it's my favorite modern cartoon and much respect and love to everyone who worked on it especially Mike Judge. A+++++++
