I love this game. When I upgraded my Tandy 3200 Computer with a CD-Rom drive(1993-1994)My dad got me one of those 10 packs that had games and software and KQ5 was one ofthe first I even played in the series and was hooked and had to go collect the whole series. I love this game and the series. Thank you for posting.
YES! The whole thing! Thanks for posting this! I think it was a clip last time I saw the EGA version. Ah memories. My dad's machine had VGA, but my brother's only had EGA and he planned to play it in his room so he got the EGA version. We shared a room so this was the version I remember seeing/playing through until we got the King's Quest collection years later. Thanks again for posting this
Regrettably, although GOG does a fantastic job at most things, the one thing I will say they lack is providing all versions of a game. GOG Loom for example is 256 colors only (the canonical 16-color version is not included). I have no idea where to get KQ5 EGA.
> the canonical 16-color version is not included You mean the voiced CD version? The FM Towns version of Loom had both the enhanced graphics and the complete script.
Also, FYI there is an EGA version of KQ6, but it's not a separate release. The DOS floppy version supports both EGA and VGA, you have to select EGA in the installation.
Actually the original VGA floppy didn't have speech either so you didn't have to hear Cedric. It was the CD-ROM version from 1991 that featured speech and only available in VGA.
Although it looks like they did some kind of straight conversion from the VGA art, maybe with a little bit of touch-up, this is... surprisingly good for EGA! They must have done something specific, because if you convert the art manually in eg. Photoshop to an EGA (well... technically 16 colour CGA) palette, it looks way worse than this. I remember when I convinced my parents to buy KQV, I almost accidentally ended up with the EGA version. We'd gotten back to the car, when I was excitedly reading the specs label and I noticed it was the 16 colour version. A quick duck back into the store, and we swapped it for the VGA (floppy disk) version. Lucky!
Im looking for a digital copy of the ega version. I have a physical vga copy but my handheld only runs the 16 color version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would also appreciate it if someone could put this up somewhere to download. I found the FM Towns version but can't find this anywhere. Also can't find the PC-98 version.
PSA: If anyone is having trouble finding the Japanese ports (ie. MSX, NEC, Sharp, Fujitsu) of American games on the usual ROM sites, archive.org has a bunch of really huge, authoritative collections available for download. Unfortunately the best FM Towns collection is around 90 gigs and is an all-or-nothing download because it's a multi-part zip. I've been able to find just about everything I want except for the 16-color version of Ultima Underworld on the PC-98. Also, if anyone doesn't know already, the FM Towns version of King's Quest V is fully voiced in Japanese and is well worth tracking down and playing. You can run it in ScummVM. For Ultima fans, The FM Towns version of Ultima VI is fully voiced in both English and Japanese, even though none of the Western releases had English voice acting, and is also worth getting. The fan-made Nuvie engine also supports the voice tracks if you don't want to bother with Towns emulation.
Yeah, and it's bilingual. They just ported over the EGA graphics, though, and I think they could done a much better job adapting the visuals to the PC-9801 since it can show 16 out of 4096 colors versus EGA's 16 out of only 64 colors.
