That brought back fun memories. When I was a teenager I discovered a Kingdom Hearts fanfic writer that I really liked. They were fairly competent (at least for that medium), and liked writting long, poetic and flowery descriptions. At some point, for the fun of it, they made a piece of erotica about a keyblade and a keyhole, in that over-descriptive style. It was one of the funniest thing I had seen on the Internet at the time.

As a Concerned Parent, I have a Parental Concern: what if my child is too stupid or ignorant or willfully, stubbornly misinformed that they refuse to grasp that the binary abstractions and heuristics which work reasonably well for the majority of our interpersonal interactions in more conservative-leaning communities are not themselves the underlying reality, and thus confuses the oversimplified and culturally-encoded artificial dichotomy with the true way of things? And what if every single person in their life including myself is so bad at explaining, so hamstrung by the unjust laws I support, or so dependent on this binary construction to provide their own sense of self and justify the way the world is, that none of us can explain the very simple concept that sometimes there’s more than two options, and also sometimes a concept such as “gender is a binary” has a prescriptive effect rather than a purely descriptive effect. Or, what if it turns out that I’m a bigot, or that something is true that makes me uncomfortable? That’d be bad, right? And also someone else’s fault? It’s important to note that it would not in any event be my fault, or cause me to have to re-evaluate any of the beliefs I hold about the world, or really have to experience any personal growth at all, really. Or, what if my kid doesn’t like the needlessly-constrictive role which they’ve had placed upon them, and God gets mad because if there’s three things the New Testament is about, it’s unquestioningly accepting existing patriarchal religious authority, judging people, and also genitals.
