Eliud Kipchoge is the greatest marathoner of all time. He is the marathon world record holder and two times Olympic gold medalist. He has been my hero and personal inspiration for many years. A few days ago I sat down for a 15 minute Zoom interview. Yesterday I got an opportunity to join my friend Lewis for a coffee with Eliud in Eugene, OR. We had another great conversation and I shot some photos of Eliud.
We discuss Eliud’s training, running advice for non elite runners looking to improve and his new Universal Pictures movie, "The Last Milestone”. This is an incredible film that documents his journey of successfully attempting to break the 2 hour marathon mark and leave his place in history.
More than 500 million people watched this event live, most people said Sub 2 was impossible.
Although Eliud has achieved everything in running, he is such a humble and kind person.

Wow. This is an incredible testament to your dedication to this project over the years, Floris. Ever since I took your advice from your running sub-3 marathon video years ago, they have been serving me as the pillars of my marathon strategy every time. Please keep on going. Kipchoge was there to prove that you are doing it right, my friend.

That's 100% spot on. I've kept a training diary since day 1. I aggregate mileage---improve volume,speed & repetition #'s based on knowledge of trends & protocols that worked fantasticly well. 1 caveat though---don't become a "slave" to #'s. I call it The Tyranny of Numbers. Numbers are NOT important. Running for time can result in serendipitous PR's because you're not preprogrammed expected outcomes.

Were forgetting, Eliud does most of his base endurance mileage, at around 6 minutes per mile, or faster. We forget, an athlete who regularly runs well under 2-04 for the full 44k distance, is training at a pace, few runners can achieve for one mile, let alone 26.2. To race faster, you have to train faster, which is an easy prospect when your young, such as your early thirties. When your a middle aged runner, past aged 50 or so, training harder and faster can lead to injury. Its just best to admire the supreme running talents of Mr Kipchoge, as trying to emulate his workouts would spell disaster for most good runners
@FlorisGierman
@FlorisGierman 3 года назад
Copying the training of elite athletes as a non elite runner can absolutely lead to injury. There are other ways to become faster, by training mostly at lower intensity and with a good amount of training volume.
