About this film:
KIRAC was asked by Rotary club to make a little promo-video for collecting art. Frieze Art Fair was very supportive of giving KIRAC acces. We were allowed to film from 1 till 5, but they wanted us to leave after 30 minutes because a gallery owner got upset.
Involved and tagged people:
Tarik Sadouma, Kate Sinha, Stefan Ruitenbeek, Mara McCarthy, Wally Hedrick, Simone Forti, David Hoyland, Jon Rafman, Stefan Simchowitz.

I’ve watched a couple of episodes of KIRAC to see what the fuss is about and although they try to make some relevant points (deconstructing superficiality and facades), the form is often bullying, their own ego trips and a lot of toxicity. Idem for this video. They give a strong vibe of failed artists / failed art critics with sad lives :(((( Not sure their goal justifies their means either

Also, you going after her for her red hair and green dress is odd. Is it supposed to be an aspect of her hypocrisy? Or do you just think it's ugly, not fashionable? You went for it immediately. It was very low brow without the joyfulness that should come with low brow. It was like you were a caveman and could only utter two syllables. You maybe wanted to provoke her into an unstable, back-sliding position, but there are cleverer ways of doing that. And I think you'd get more answers, and more interesting content, and more depth, by striking with more deliberation.
@carpediem8655
@carpediem8655 6 лет назад
I also watched it. But I think the joke about her red hair came from another place. The frist thing the interviewer said was I need help. She replied with do you need therapy or something like that? That question is very down grading and disrespectful. It's disrespectful towards the interviewer, because it's an assumption that he might have mental problems. And it's disrespectful for people who're going through therapy, because not everyone that's asking for help directly needs therapy. Her question of, do you need therapy ?, was an act of looking down on him, making a fool of him. It also states that she is in a superior position. She's acting like a savior, the one with knowledge and the interviewer is in this case the stupid person that needs to listen to her advice's. So he responded with a joke about her red hair. Now they both were looking down on each other so their positions in the discussion are equal again.

Am intrigued by the play. Questions I keep asking myself are: is this real or not. First time I saw an artist interviewing a gallery owner. Usually it's the other way around. As someone who is an art maker I have to say that I feel empowered by this video. She sells art made by dead or almost dead artists (with Parkinson's ), but the artist that is still alive triggers her, simply by asking questions, to kick him out. And the art fair's choice to follow commands of the gallery owner without opting to moderate fairly between the two parties (gallery owner v.s artist) shows how much power gallery owners have over 'Art' and how little power artists have in this 'Art-game'. If this is so, is (western) Art then, as its exhibited in art fairs and galleries - dead ?

I think in this case it is more about the gallery having a place in this event while they are just people visiting. If the artists had their spot and a gallerist would ask them lots of uncomfortable questions it would not be weird if the artists were to send the gallerist away. However, I do think that an artist would/should be able to respond to such questions while the gallerist did not.

Oh look, it's the wine bar snob's version of internet culture's favorite bitter comedian bully Sam Hyde. You know, it's interesting how none of the actual analysis may actually occur inside the conversation with the woman, who is really the only one trying to engage in a debate. Better regale that to the safe space of minute long bits of white on black text. I also love how you conclude "protest art is necessarily stupid and simplistic" from finding one supposed example of art that you yourself claim isn't really fulfilling its stated protest mission. It's basically like saying "I bought a vacuum cleaner from a man at my door once but it turned out it didn't even work. This is why vacuum cleaners are necessarily stupid and simplistic"

(I don't see your response here but will quote it in case somebody wonders). - Keeping It Real Art Critics: Many! But tell me about your interpretations! What do you think? Well first I think it's a cool idea for a channel, it's the first "art critics channel" I've come across and would love to see more videos like this one so keep the good work! But also, I'm very skeptical about art and probably even more about art critics, overall what I didn't like about this is the approach of your artist friend Tarik Sadouma, starting by the "I'm not the one with red hair" comment and many more that I don't think help out on the mission you guys had. I liked much better the approach of the girl who was respectful and said a very powerful sentence about "having the freedom to talk to a gallery about art on an art fair". It was also very interesting the comment Sadouma made while eating pizza "when you dehumanize a gallery owner and you make her into an object, herself, next to the work, she becomes your artwork with the work she is in, with her faulty ways of thinking, and then she cried, which is wonderful, she was looking for some kind of empathy, and I didn't give her any, and I'm very proud of it" well that sound to me like an "art God" talking and I'm not into it. But hey, I enjoyed the video and will surely keep watching them, so keep them coming!

You're specifically saying that protest art is stupid because where is the controversy in hanging art that was made to protest a war that is already completed, but surely that doesn't represent the whole of protest art. There is plenty of art made protesting current wars. Maybe not something that Paul McCartney's daughter would be curating (or that you, for example, would be invited to attend,) but it's out there. I think you're just kind of trying to seem relevant by calling out others on their supposed hypocrisy, but it's kind of boring? like what are you actually offering to the world by pointing out that the official art world is full of phonies? like, duh? we knew that? maybe that woman is just living in her delusion, just like you are. maybe her delusion made her cry, just like your delusion made you proud. You seem to be trying to change the art world from the inside but you are going about it in a way that just looks like kind of juvenile and inefficient and expressionless and joyless. You say "we're just mercenaries, it's not personal" and ignore the irony of that statement.

And if you actually stayed polite then you'd remove their reaction and intention to remove you. You could then have lots of film of pointing out their flaws. And allow them time to process their flaws, maybe even discuss how they feel about those flaws, perhaps you would also discuss yours. This movie was going to an interesting place, you had a serious point and you were making that point well. But you insulted and were rude. I would like to see you skillfully having the difficult conversation with the person who is going to be feeling vulnerable as you point out their flaws, and you being able to navigate that conversation with them, allowing them to open, be honest, not defensive. That's where the real wow will be. They themselves will have the Eureka moment.

This is was a bit bully episode, as if they were somehow neutral "talking about art", but starting with a nasty comment like that. Clearly confrontational and having already their own agenda isn't really the best way to analyze anything. Also playing this role of innocent art critics is bs since they're pointing at their camera to people and acting as if it's a normal power relation in a social situation. Also, supporting a politician that was pro-war might put the gallerist in an awkward situation, but their reasoning would then mean that we would have to 100% aligned with politicians all the time.

Why you hate imagine? The video is a response to imagine? Imagine there's no heaven, because he talk about a mudane world with no God, are you Christian?

So, it doesn't matter that the war has ended, because the paintings by itself has an historical value, as they once were paintings made with the intention to provoke some kind of discussion, or esthetical experience about the war and are part of determined cultural moment. Now, you come and ask, how about the wars happening right, now? What this question has to do with anything? It is completely idiotic. Another question, from your stupid arguments, how any painting can address the theme of war without using semiotics? Despite of debating the quality of the art works, the random attacks and anti-ethic approach to the interview, what really stands outs, is the stupidity, the idiocy of these lunatics "art critics". You can see in their eyes sheer dementia.

Yes, they provoked a discussion back then. That is the historical value. So, to restore that value you provoke the same kind of discussion again!
@heitorcaramez
@heitorcaramez 2 года назад
@@timgeurts Which historical value? His whole point was that the painting had no more historical value, due to the war being over, and therefore makes no sense to the present. (that phrase in itself has no logic.

oh my god. how thin is the skin of the people in the art world? what i saw was someone not agreeing with their view and challenging theirs. the reaction on this is so childish i had to crinch. it is what is wrong with the "higher educated". they realy need to get out of their save bubble and go be in the real world. if i talk to my neighbour i get more challenged than that.

Good argument. But their approach is cynical, they are not for a discussion but for a happening, a show off. It is never a fair discussion they intend, but a trap where they get to be as superior or clever.
