Mr. Sides handled the Navajo women question great. The plains tribes do have a habit of overlooking or denying the fact that their people lived in a culture of the 'Warrior Society'. Kidnnapping, rape, murder and theft was the stock in trade, inter-tribal war and the conflict between the Navajo and the Latino's of the South Western part of the USA. The Navajo war bought peace to this area where there had only been violence, bloodshed and grief on all sides. The Federal government had to stop it. Bravo, Mr Sides.
This was a really great talk. Thank you. I especially appreciated the Native American woman who asked about the representation of Native Americans in his book. Having read the book, I thought that Mr. Sides did a wonderful job bringing to life the leaders and heros on Navajo side in particular. The way he described Narbona and Manuelito was tremendous. I wouldnt say there are any "heros" in his book, but just wonderful characters who represented such an interesting time in history. (note, I did not say American history as there are many different people and histories involved.)
Great book. You guys should read the story about the expedition to The arctic. I can’t remember what it’s called but should be pretty easy to find he’s only got a few books that he’s written because he put so much effort into each one
I have always thought that there should have been a movie about Kit Carson, and that he should have been played by Audie Murphy A great view of Kit Carson was, in the book Flashgun and the Redskins, by George MacDonald Fraser!
That would depend on your perspective. There probably aren't too many portraits of the man hanging in Navajo hogans, but his life was complex enough that branding him a "bad man" is a bit unfair in the context of the mid-19th century.
As the woman in the audience suggested. He executed campaigns of terror that led to death of thousands and generations of suffering. Attempts to diminish this by trying to talk about the framework of the times is shameful. the author showed he knew this in how he squirmed and stammered when confronted by her. Why were those oral histories given so limited weight when written materials were often so tainted. The woman had visited Germany and commented on how they continue to diminish the Holocaust. Lincoln never showed to fortitude of putting these murderers on trial as he did for Andersonville. There were no Nuremberg Trials. What happened was shameful and there are no arguments to diminish that though I’m sure there are those who feel a need to argue and continue to romantacize this the way victors do rather than own it.
@@freebooterbiker nonsense. He and his wife bought a Navajo slave for a donkey. He called various Native peoples the worst racist slurs, in addition to killing them by hundreds. He asked for permission to let the Utes keep Navajo women and children as a reward for their service. Horrible man, even by the standards of the time.
My uncle got sent to do the shit from kit Karon. He began friend with the Indian. So he sent major Vasquez from chocon new mexico. Mr Vasquez ended up doing post office and doing a lot with property. Also they were married to the married to both sister that took care of Mable dodge
Yup, but at least Hampton ultimately didn’t advocate for the further removal of historical statues. I was just at Carson park in Taos last week and enjoyed spending time at Kit & Josephina’s grave amongst others.
Indians are from India.!!!. Of course the Navajo People were are war... War was thrust upon them you would be at war too if you had wave after wave of illegal intrusion and invasion upon your homeland of course you are going to respond in kind. The Navajo people had no choice but to engage in its cycle of war for defending its society. And it wasn't always war between Sovereign Native Nations. Did you Americans just sit back and do nothing when Pearl Harbor was attacked and on Sept 11th ..?? .. no you responded in kind!!! Typical white Colonizer perspective of fake news history. I'm sure that's the lie that makes Hampton sleep at night!.. NATIVE INDEPENDENCE !!!!
