Knee hyperextension is a problem, It is major dysfunction in posture and Gait function, It is not just a point of discomfort, for many it has been the cause of injury, such as ACL tears.
Knee hyperextension, may be considered as a display of hyper flexibility, but it is not, it actually is a sign of weak of muscle activation.
In this Video I will show you how I fixed it.
In direct terms. Muscles should be considered as pulleys for the body but, unlike a mechanical pulley where the rope runs end to end.
Reciprocal inhibition describes the process of muscles on one side of a joint relaxing to accommodate contraction on the other side of that joint. ... Joints are controlled by two opposing sets of muscles, extensors and flexors, which must work in synchrony for smooth movement.
The Muscle insertion points are located on one side of the joint, there are The body uses signals from the nervous system to supplant the lack of direct connection.
The majority of these cases suffer from
Weak leg extension anteriorly and a weak posterior mainly hamstring lengthening for activaton within the hinging of the hip.. Forcing the knee to float between end points to compensate.
That is why our knees lock back and are bent with ease, but are unable to isometrically hold the neutral position as easily.

I am 36, and have had my knees like this since I can remember. I have no pain. And I can walk for miles. But standing up for long periods of time hurts. I didn't know this was not normal, since I've had it for ever. Here I thought it was some kind of normalty, and just good flexibility.

I’m seventeen and I just found out this year that I’ve had this. I also tend to be able to stand without discomfort for longer periods of time than my peers. And yes, I lock my knees all the time when standing… never knew it was supposedly bad. I don’t do any sports.

@@sophiaredwood5825 Im of the same age, I do alot of sports, both my knees were hyperextended since birth, I have had absolutely no problems. My peers thought that it was actually a condition helping me with sports due to my performance in most sports. Just recently I had an acl reconstruction surgery due to a severe sports injury, as a result of it, my right leg is no longer hyperextended but my left still is, I am in an even bigger dilemma than ever, should I just leave it as it is or should I try and fix it with exercises? Even though one of my legs is hyperextended and one isn't, I feel almost no difference.

Oh yeah it sure is a problem I’ve had since my teens; it never occurred to me until realized it a few years ago when researching about fallen arches (or flat feet) which is another problem I’ve had. I think both of those issues are connected, followed by hips, then back, then neck and even posture, each overcompensating for the one before it. This has lead me to work one or two, starting with arches and maybe knees to eventually fix the whole domino effect of the body that’s quite remarkable but also sucks. I wish my parents helped to address my arches while I was still young as it’s much mores solvable then, but at least it’s still possible to do so.

I have a lot of minor back pain, nothing debilitating, but it’s kept me from working out lately. I have a prominent arch in my lower back, but because I have an appropriate pelvic tilt and pay attention to my posture, I thought it was normal for me. Then last week I randomly put together that locking/ hyperextending my knees is the culprit. I’ve been trying to keep some bend in them since noticing, and it feels SO funny, like I’m getting ready to do a squat 😂

@ColynKirkland

Look, from what I've been advised by an actual Physical Therapist, you want to shift your focus to your hamstrings (knee flexors) by strengthening them via some form of a hamstring curl. With the combination of hip flexion and knee extension -- which is what you see in the video --, you are activating your quads and hip flexors, and **STRETCHING** your hamstrings, thus, you are doing the exact opposite of what may need to be performed in order to address the problem. To reiterate, hyperextension can be a result of tight quads, and weak hamstrings. As you've discovered, when you do this exercise, you are only going to make your hamstrings more loose.

Any tips for having only 1 badly hyper extended knee?
@luisrbled3844

Is this excercise enough to bring the knees back into the normal position? So that it doesn’t bend. Ack anymore
@GrownandHealthy
@GrownandHealthy 4 года назад
Yes, when performing the exercise, attempt to lockout your knees back while attempting to contact your thighs with your abdominals..you will find it very difficult, indicating end range weakness. Once you have built the strength up to perform the lockout with ease, your knees won't hyperextend unless you direct them.

Grown and Healthy thanks one more question, before my injury my legs would be in a normal position, then I hyperextended my left leg and now the left one bends back further than the other one, if I do this exercise will it return to the normal posture like before?

Does this exercise/stretch make Anterior Pelvic Tilt worse? Which do you think I should fix first, APT or hyperextended knee.
@GrownandHealthy
@GrownandHealthy 4 года назад
You may gain more from focusing on your ATP, if you have pain..but this exercise, performed properly, will not make your ATP worse.

Hey! I've been doing calf raises for an achilles injury, but have been doing them with hyperextension of my knees, leading to pain. Have had a problem with knee hyperextension all my life. Did 2 sets of the 2nd exercise and immediately felt a lot of pain relief! What is the 2nd exercise called? Thanks so much!

I was told by my orthopedic surgeon that my knees just have more ROM than normal. I did heavy barbell lifts and Olympic lifts, with lots of stretching and accessory exercises, for years during and after college and my knees always have had this extra range of movement. How exactly are some body weight or lightly weighted exercises supposed to remove that?

So I got hyperextended legs from stretching to much but what I don’t understand is when Im doing the excercises it feels like my legs are just being stretched further. (I start with bent knees)

Thank you so much. It helps me. But, what if my legs not wanting to stay straight?
@GrownandHealthy
@GrownandHealthy 4 года назад
When does it not want to stay straight? During the exercise or when standing? This is actually an end range strength exercise and if you find it a struggle to keep the legs straight at the bottom, you will develop the strength with practice.

Mine is caused by one leg being a half centimetre shorter, and I have always had it. It makes it very difficult to do things like dancing, any bending leg exercises (especially squats) because the knee will always twist inward and trying to make it face straight when I bend actually causes discomfort. Now that I want to try to improve my strength overall this is causing me much frustration during workouts. Trying to find any useful information to help mitigate it at least or how to modify my exercises. I will give this one a try as well.

I want to ask, doesn't this exercise cause rounded shoulders?
@GrownandHealthy
@GrownandHealthy 4 года назад
Not when done correctly, if you raise your shoulders off the ground you your hands should be in the same position as your overhead press. This is a fundamental gymnastics drill and gymnasts are not known for rounded shoulders. If you find it hard to keep the hands outstretched without rounding, try the regressions until your core strengthens.

While you are doing the excercise should your legs be hyperextended?
@GrownandHealthy
@GrownandHealthy 3 года назад
No, begin the exercise with slightly bent forward knees and then attempt to push knees backwards when fully folded over.
@KM-xn4us
@KM-xn4us 4 года назад
arent you lengthening your hamstring to much with this streatch, though hyperextended knees were cause of to lose and sometimes weak hamstring and you needed to streangthem them and make them and make them a little thighter and more active. I would understand it on a athelete that have a very strong and tight hamstring, whats ur opinion on this :)
@GrownandHealthy
@GrownandHealthy 4 года назад
The concept in this exercise is to develop the reciprocal muscles, the hamstrings never actually lengthen... they are inhibited, because your hip flexor aren't contributing to the effort (end range strength) the more you practice this with the intention of pulling your abs to your thighs through the compression of the hip flexor, you will find the hamstrings extend further.
