Good video, but I'd think your forearms need to touch the floor for full contraction? Perhaps there's variability here depending on how heavy the weight you're using is.

Thank you! I can get full abdominal contraction with the range of motion shown. During the exercise, I'm only thinking about shortening the distance from my rib cage to my navel (spinal flexion). To go any lower, I would have to bend forward at the waist (hip flexion). You certainly could increase the range of motion by touching the floor with your forearms, but I don't believe that is necessary to get a full contraction.

I was told to turn around and do them the other way for more tension, was that correct?

You can do rope crunches facing the other direction. However, tension is greatest when the cable is perpendicular to the working muscle (abdomen). That means facing the pulley generally puts more tension on the abs in the contracted position, while facing away results in more tension in the stretched position. This also depends on the height of the pulley, the length of the handle, and how far away you are from the pulley. But the way I demonstrate in the video is great for maximizing tension on the abs in the contracted position.

@@AArmijo-jd6mj Yeah, you could definitely do both exercises or alternate variations each week. You could also perform some reps with rotation to target your obliques.

Your core should be engaged and under tension throughout the exercise, but really try to contract your abs at the bottom of the crunch.
