Lol you keyboard warriors are funny. These are all ways that work. It's not grandpa's stone. But if you needed to it works just fine. I used the drill and the cup method for years up in Delta here in Alaska and I worked fine skinning moose. I have high quality knifes and it didn't ruin anything. As for the spark plug, I just tried it and it in fact works, same with using the back or the toilet and lid. Use your brain and keep your angle and your fine

@Akhazmat907 ur full of shìt! If your doing 20,000+ cuts per day, that technique will make you're life a misery. Nice try with you're 'one x Moose'...anyone can pull that off with a butter knife or a stone age adze made of stone. Try it on an industrial scale brah! Think 2000 Moose per day. That 'Keyboard Warrior Slaying' mentality you think u have is just mere wannabe...

Instead of a porcelain cup or a spark plug, it is better and smarter to use a grinding stone at a price of €1 Namiesto porcelánového pohára alebo zapaľovacej sviečky je lepšie a šikovnejšie použiť brúsny kameň v cene 1€

@einundsiebenziger5488

A) the steel of the bolt and nuts is way too soft to sharpen any knife steel. As you can see, the tomato still gets squished during cutting even after "sharpening" B) it is pretty dangerous to repurpose a power drill like this C) putting all the parts together takes much longer than using a measly 5-bucks drag-though sharpener that also will get you a better result. D) The botton-of-a-ceramic-cup-hack does work as the material is basically the same as that of a whetstone E) it works even better when you don't drag the blade in a radial motion (blade tip pointing towards the center of the cup) as shown here, but perpendicular to the coarse rim of the cup. F) While the ceramic part of the spark plug works as an abrasive, this method is a waste of time, effort and material.
@KendrasEdge757
@KendrasEdge757 Месяц назад
100%, just buy a ceramic rod to hone the edge or a basic 20• carbide pocket sharpener. Hell; the edge of your car/truck window glass will hone the edge like a ceramic rod will. Every tractor supply or Walmart sells those pull through carbide sharpeners for $10. Makes all this in the video a complete waste of time.

If you cut out the ceramic part of a spark plug you are left with a tool that is useful for engine mechanics to find a cylinder's compression stroke . If the metal remains of the spark plug are screwed into an engine cylinder and a balloon is attached to where the ceramic fitted and the engine crank is slowly revolved the balloon will inflate . This will show the compression stroke , but not top dead centre ; it saves removing the valve covers to check for the compression stroke . It might also act as a rough guide to compression differences between cylinders , but that might be pushing the technique a bit far , I am not too sure ! Nothing to do with knife sharpening , but we are here to learn !

I have several good knives, gifts from my son. But I have a very cheap 5" santoku that I keep really sharp with a $6 honing steel, I use it for every day tasks. I plan on getting a nice one like this, it's light and very easy to use, but can't justify the expense.

From a very dull knife to a somewhat dull knife. No, the only way is to learn how to sharpen your knife with a stone and polish it thereafter.
@steinlaus2072
@steinlaus2072 Месяц назад
Polished blade, razor sharp is ideal for hair and paper, but will not cut perfectly tomato skin. Even with a razor blade it’s hard to cut tomato skin. For tomato skin you need it bit rough, fine micro sawtooth structure, like he did it with the spark plug ceramic grind. The micro edges better penetrates that tomato skin. But yes, in general for knifes I prefer also razor sharp ones with polished blades. Works for most applications as best choice in doubt. But not ideal for tomato skin.

Depends on the hardness of the steel and the ceramic type of the mug. With very hard knife steel above 62 HRC, some ceramics are too soft. Then it needs diamond coated grinding surfaces.

You can probably get the same result with a pass through sharpener. I agree ceramic on a plate or cup could sharpen a knife but it's going to take a while and not worth you're time. Buy a electric sharpener or a set whetstones is probably the best way to go. The small investment will probably last you for decades. Unless you live in the woods and all you have is a ceramic cup this is not the way to go💯
