This episode is an exploration into a unique stone. This whetstone has its own reputation. Naniwa has always been a fantastic company. This whetstone is an opportunity for them to show that you only need one whetstone stone. Let there only be one. It has been around for a while. It is 2 1/2 inches thicker than your average whetstone. It straddles the line between sharpening and polishing. In this video, we use the infamous, Masamoto KS Shirogami (White Paper) #2. I felt it was important to test this theory on a knife that I had sharpened many times before. I don't believe that the stone is good for sharpening something that is extremely dull. I do believe, by the video evidence presents that you can use this stone to maintain your knives and bring them back to a sharpness that is above and beyond. Enjoy our demonstration. I have used the Green Brick on and off for several years. I like it, but it does have its quirks. My take: It performs and polishes much higher than it's stated grit -- more like a 5K stone. I use it as a splash & go; there's no need to soak. It is, however, VERY soft and loads up and dishes out easily. For that reason edge leading strokes must be done with care to avoid gashing into the stone. I generally use an edge trailing stroke. If one can live with all that, it's a very nice stone.

I've used the Green Brick of Joy and for me it's kind of a litmus test for getting my bevel set right. I use a USB microscope (I know - "training wheels"). I can get what looks like a perfectly even bevel on a Naniwa pro (Chosera) 400, and 1K. then go to the Green Brick and uh-oh, the bevel wasn't as good as I had thought! The 2K really polishes it up fast and shows mistakes. When I get it clean with the 2K, I can go to a 10k and a strop and I have sub-100 Bess. The 2k is a difficult stone to learn to use correctly, is my take on it. A Chosera 400 is almost a beginner's stone, it's so easy. But like the man said, he's going with a knife he knows. The 2k is the same - it requires knowing. Then, it's a terrific stone.

I agree that if you don’t know what the burr feels like then it’s hard to do it on the 2K. You gotta know first and then you can mess around

@@nadm hunt for it, the prices are all over the place! Also make sure to check sizing as they come in a very small size that is great for smaller knives but a pain for larger.

I love big stones, so this has been on my radar for some time. I have a 25 year old 1200 grit stone that has definitely seen better days and could be a candidate for retirement. It’s much smaller now than when new lol. Good thing you flattened it first as synthetic stones have a reputation for having a “skin” that performs differently than the rest of the stone. Speaking of cork, you could cut a piece of cork to fit under your bridge there under the middle to stop the bridge from flexing up and down.

Great recommendation I will look out for that stone. This stone plus my 6000 natural stone (Belgium Brick) would be a nice combination for complete knife maintenace.

Since naniwa sink bridge already has a mechanism that locks the stone in place, is there a special reason to use a stone holder on top of it?

It is a very bi-polar stone that can do a lot of things very well - but it can also frustrate you to the extreme.

@@nadm Pressure seems the key to me as it is a slow stone....With high pressure it will create a very high polish...untill you press so hard that it bites into the edge....It works great but like said - its either slow or unforgiving....IMHO

What coarse stone (400 - 600 grit) would bridge the gap between extra coarse stones (100s - 200s grit) and Naniwa's 2k stone (NP and NA/GBJ)?

It definitely should. This stone has been incredible every time we’ve ever used it. We are still messing around with the different types of stones for the type of steel you’re referring to. You definitely have a reason to be concerned because of the hardness of the steel. I have not found that anything has prevented me from sharpening it. Sometimes it just takes a little longer. This stone has been just an incredible performer and some thing I think everyone should have in their arsenal.

Thanks for that take on the green brick of joy 🤩 I’m probably thinking cerax/rika 1000/5000 or cho 800/3000, but have been curious where this soaker 2000 would exist just cause it’s so cool. I need it. Just not sure why. (This doesn’t slow me down usually 😂) Great teamwork- us guys who are survivors know the pecking order!

While I’m here - as you see I’m in purchase mode. Basically deciding soaker vs splash n go. Been sharpening on mid/cheap stuff or systems for a while and the experience isn’t very enjoyable. Plan is one of the two mentioned and like a Shapton pro 320 in the basement or maybe an atoma plate that would double duty as flattener. Thoughts if you would please? Thank you 😊 Sub’d

@@baldwin9281 I own everything that you mentioned and I love them all. I don't know your budget but I would definitely make sure you could flatten your stones first. The 320 isn't that aggressive if you already have a 400. I would go down to the 220 to just do the work a little faster. If you're already going to be grinding that much material off might as will be a little bit more aggressive. I like splash and goes over soaking stones. I do like the stone and we're getting ready to do a whetstone war with it.

@@nadm thank you! I’m looking at probably an Atoma 140 that I can do double duty with. Budget is such that I can buy the better stones - but no free lunch. It has to make sense. Not worried about high polish. I much prefer Katsumi. Is the splash n go preference just ease of use? Thanks again! Marc

@@nadm how much of a ripper is the Atoma 400? Any experience? When I need to REALLY remove stock I have ceramic belts and 8” diamond wheels (the latter being INSANELY expensive but handy) so I’m trying to figure my best move here in the low grit space for now. Knowing me now that I’ve opened this can of worms I’ll end up owning everything eventually anyway. Just timing Thanks 🙏

If you’re not a true hard-core white stone person then you don’t need it. If you’ve got all of that then you’re fine. If you’re a Whetstone person you need it to flatten your stones. You don’t need it for your knife

Not to let on about my activities, but you can use a 6lb test monofilament Spiderwire. The calibrated Edge-On-Up filament is like $20+ bucks for 325 tests. If you allow a generous 4" per test, that's somewhere around 100 feet of line. If you've ever gone for them easily spooked fish (and tree branches), you know you get 300 YARDS of Grade A+ line for around $8 bucks. And it has low memory (if you know what that means). The 10lb. line is stronger, the 4lb. line is weaker. I have yet to run full comparisons, but I know that if I get 140 grams on 10lb test, that's likely below 100 on their calibrated line. How nerdy can one get? Testing 20 times on a 240mm knife just to be sure?

So, I get really nailed by people in videos if I don’t use something that’s BESS certified. I’ve had a lengthy conversations with people who won’t let it go. I can definitely do something like what you’re saying for my own self but I could never put it in a video. You’ve got to live up to everyone’s expectations!

Suehiro has been my favorite for a while. The Morihei Feels like you own a Porsche. You have to understand the micro bevel that it gives to be able to appreciate how great they are. I don’t know if you’re a beginner could feel that. I’m getting ready to use the king for the first time. I’m excited to see what everyone’s been saying about that. Naniwa professional has been tried and true for so long. They are super stones and professional stones are of the highest level. They have really good feedback. I think the super stones come in at a good price. Overall I really love the Suehiro product and believe that there Cerax Line can give you good results at an inexpensive price. I’m not a big fan of soaking stones anymore. They do an amazing job but you have to have time to soak them. All of them are somewhat comparable in price. You and I both know that the professional series is a little bit more of an investment but will pay off overtime. I think a person who is getting in should jump up to the professional level if they have the money

@@nadm thanks for sharing your experience ;) I fully agree that after some time it is worth investing in a good stone. Even sometimes it is worth saving a little longer what I was doing to buy something good. That's why I was looking for advice not to overpay and to have the right set. I will let you know what and how it ended. When you talk about micro bevel you are talking about doing on 15 degre extra ending on 20 degre.

@@nadm I'm really enjoying your video's, thank you for what your doing, especially the stone wars! I'm actually just getting started in the world of Japanese wetstones and hoping you can help me with a little as I am looking for a really basic setup, for home and in the field/on the go... I'm drawn to the green brick and I think it's finish, followed by a strop(at most) will suffice for my EDC pocket knives, hunting/meat processing and all our kitchen knives, my question is, do you think it would be feasible to jump from a shapton pro 1k to the brick? Trying to keep it low budget and cover all my needs with a minimal investment while garnering maximum results, so all in with only 3 items... The green brick of joy glued to the shapton pro 1000(21cm×7cm×7cm, no stone holder needed) and the atoma140 for lapping and any blade chips or major edge repairs, am I offside in thinking this would work well? your opinion would be greatly appreciated sir, if you have the time ofcourse, thank you again:)

@@troyschonke6304 if your knife doesn't really get that dull it's just a little bit dull then you only need the 2000 grit. If it's truly doll then I would use the 1000 and then you don't really need to pay unless you want to use it. I have videos on set up in my playlist and I'll put a link. If you're actually using the knife all the time than the 1000 is gonna be the one stone you can take out to the woods without having to carry the humongous green brick of joy. Japanese natural white stones are a different topic altogether. We will be doing a series once I am healed from my car accident. It'll be a minute because you have to think of them differently. They don't come in great. They are made by nature and so there's a lot to talk about. If you're the outdoorsman then depending on the knife, you might want to carry the Naniwa diamond compact fieldstone. It is small and it will do everything you needed to do. EDC pocket knives come in a variety of different steel. Because of the different molecular make up. You might want to just get the diamond stone because it will work on every different type of steel.

@@nadm thank you kindly sir, I'm sorry to hear about your accident, God always has a reason for slowing us down even though we don't necessarily see it as such, I hope and pray you have a speedy recovery! I actually have spyderco double stuff 2 for when I'm on foot or packing light, what I'm aiming for is a more serious, long term setup for home, taking to friends and families, maybe even using at the farmers market someday for a little side business and to help pass the time... It seems to me you deburred at a lower angle than you sharpened. I am not trying to criticize and I am sure you are a better sharpener than me but it looks like you went from 15 degrees to almost flat against the stone and probably still had a burr.

So, I finish my last strokes flatter. I use my first strokes as a way of getting off the burr. I do my last strokes as a way to flatten out the edge.

I absolutely do not like the green brick stone. I am all about Naniwa stones but this is the most over hyped stone that says Naniwa on it. I love 2000grit stones. Its a very overlooked grit that is an excellent maintainer, but I use the 2K Chosera its such a better stone with better 5 times the feedback, tactile feel, and faster. I use 2K Cosera so much I am on my third one from wearing the first two down to nothing until they broke.
