The revised testing should address the feedback that I received from the first test. I appreciate folks that take the time to review the content and even if they don't like the way things were done they state why. That helps out a lot and with this change, hopefully this is a pretty accurate test and if not let me know in the description what else you feel needs to be changed to be able to be satisfied with the test results.

Both silicon and phosphor/bronze washers are considered self lubricating, so this is actually a test of three lubricants if we count silicone as a lubricant. I suggest five pulls rather than three to help account for statistical outliers. It is interesting that you were able to detect the improvement from Blue Lube to KPL. I would call that a noticeable difference and something most knife people will also be able to detect. I easily noticed a difference between KPL and the 3 in 1 oil I had been using. KPL feels to me to be similar to Marvel Lubricating Oil. The Marvel oil does not last long and requires frequent application, the KPL has a much better long term effect. I do not consider WD40 to be a lubricant. It is great for loosening rusted bolts etc, but it is a solvent, not a lubricant.

Very nice. To remove another variable, move the blade a certain distance past the detent ball and mark the blade and handle with dots in that position. Then line up the dots each time to ensure the detent ball is the exact same distance from the hole each time. You're likely spot on without that method, but it may help.

@@BladeBanter If you're willing, can you compare KPL to mineral oil at some point? I use mineral oil since it keeps my blades food safe and it's affordable as well as having other uses. I haven't tried other stuff so I am not sure how it compares as an actual lubricant. No pressure, just a thought.

Interesting test, well done. I was wondering about putting the knife in a soft jaw vise, like a panavise horizontally and lifting straight up on the thumb hole, preferably with a scale affixed to an overhead pulley. Seems like you would eliminate 2 variables but I'm probably overthinking things.

Awesome video! I'm new to your channel and plan on hanging around. I have a Benchmade with the AXIS lock. I've been trying to find the best lubricant for that knife since it's in some ways a hybrid between a detent and a lockback. I was debating on a dry lubricant such as graphite to prevent buildup of dirt and lint . I would be interested to know your opinion.
@BladeBanter
@BladeBanter 4 года назад
After the testing I've gone with Nano Oil it's kind of a thing of preference as KPL does well too. I haven't tried dry lubricants but Nano oil has been tested in desert conditions where they lubricate and wipe off and it works in the areas with fine sand.

I use BL. It goes on as a liquid but seems to then thicken like a thin grease. Results are good on PB washers, not sure with vinyl. Due to its properties it may stay in place and function well at higher temps. Kpl in cooler temps since its thin?

@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 5 лет назад
Sorry, still see issues with your testing. But at least you have some data points for what you've done. Alcohol pads will not remove old oil. You will need to soak in acetone. Which is safe. 2nd thing is you need as minimal oil as possible. Say dip a q tip in oil and run it along the detent track. And you don't need oil for the pivot as it doesn't dictate action. People do put oil in the pivot to protect against corrosion on the metal. But the washers are self lubricating. If you want to, I usually soak the washers in lube and hang for a few then install. Even wiping them off works too. There will still be enough lube after wiping off. More than enough. You don't have a car with gears. Less lube the better for lubricity. More lube will slow action and attract dust.
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 5 лет назад
I wouldn't clean the nylon washers with acetone though. That will likely destroy the self lubrication properties. Where as it doesn't matter with phosphorus bronze. The detent is the main dictator of action.
@BladeBanter

@BigThumpr1
@BigThumpr1 5 лет назад
Tactical Center you constantly go on every reviewers post about lubrication on knives and try to debunk all their reviews with your opinions, yet you fail to provide any substantial evidence to validate or back up you opinions. I work in the aerospace industry, on jet turbine engines, primarily GE jet turbine engines. We have to follow ESM’s engine service manuals, CMM’s component maintenance manuals, PPBU’s, and AMM’s aircraft maintenance manuals provided by GE for their specified engines we overhaul and test. In those manuals, they instruct us to clean areas that have oil on them with alcohol when installing new components along with testing engines, having oil or fuel leaks. Now I would tend to believe that a major company like GE has spend hundreds of millions of dollars in research and development, along with paying engineers to figure out the best method of how to clean components on turbine engines. So when you say alcohol will not clean or remove oil, you’re wrong. We test engines for hours at a time, we use Mobil Jet II synthetic oil on all engines we test, when we have oil leaks we use alcohol per the manuals to clean up oil leaks and it works. You can watch the alcohol pull the oil or fuel away from the area that the leak. You spend too much time trying to be the internet know it all, usually the person who thinks they know everything does not really know anything.

The oil was put on the wrong side of the washers. You would want the lube on the blade side not the handle side. The washers should be married to the handles and the blade should slide in the washers. I know for a fact the test results would be extremely different. There is absolutely no way with these products you should gain friction resistance when used in the correct place.
@BladeBanter
@BladeBanter 4 года назад
Marvin thanks for watching could you clarify what you are referring to as the location that I put the lubricant on is the blade side of the washers? The viscosity would affect some of the resistance as show. always looking for new methods as I haven't seen other test methods other than it being stated that it feels better.

Knives do not need lubrication. I repeat knives do not need lubrication. Talked with Jim Allen- Three Sisters Forge, Shane Sibert and J Heafner- Heafner Knives and dozens of other knife makers. They all said lube isn't needed. The perceived improvment / performance his relative. Look at slippies, I've got some that are 75 years old and they aren't lubed and work fine. Oil is designed to reduce friction which is heat. Opening and closing a knife doesn't generate enough heat to earrant lubricant. on top of this you have to continuously lubricate the knife because it attracts debris which turns into gunk which hinders the opening at the knife. Now if you have high carbon blades that will be stored for long periods. Properly wipe them down and store them in a gun safe equipped with a dehumidifier. I live at the beach and have never had an issue as to require lubricant for a folding knife.
@BladeBanter
@BladeBanter 5 лет назад
Thank you for your experience so far, its interesting that those makers don't use any lubrication as most companies do, from Chinese brands to companies like Chris Reeves and Medford use some type of lubrication, unless they are using teflon which is self lubricating. The lubrication assists with heat but also with friction caused by pressure and surface to surface contact. If you are concerned with attracting debris brands like Nano Oil have been used in military operations where they use it in maintenance and wipe down the parts to leave a light film in areas with fine sand. The lubrication may not be needed for pure function it does make a difference in felt and as show measured resistance.
@reds7vn644
@reds7vn644 5 лет назад
@@BladeBanter the thing is friction is heat there's not enough generated for the need of lubricant. What most manufacturers put lubrication on their knives for because they know they're going to be sitting for long periods of time and they don't know in what environment on shipping containers or sitting in warehouses and being transported in the mail. So they use this it's more of a general protection. Once an individual has a knife you don't need lubrication on a knife. again that being said as long as you use common sense and clean your knife properly you don't have to worry about rust or any other issues. I've got dozens Old Slip joints summer over 70 years old and they don't have any lubrication all them I've never live located them in the 30-plus years I've had them through marketing and whatnot. Now can you tell a difference in a freshly cleaned and lubricated knife? Tree can but that is only momentary because just like all other lubricants Grime in degrees get mixed in and they no longer provide what they once did so you are forced to clean and lubricate again all while trying to achieve that initial in fractional Improvement.
