As someone that have very small funds and live paycheck to paycheck it is very nice to have a larger stash, so I buy things when they are one sale or if I occasionally have bit more money from gifts and such. By having this stash means that I can always knit/crochet something even if I don't have any money, I guess it is also a question of feeling secure for me since knitting/crocheting is a form of therapy for me and knowing that I will always have that option even if I can't afford to buy new yarns. But I totally get the idea that having a larger stash can be overwhelming and I do think I would enjoy it more if I was able to go buy the yarns whenever I wanted to start a new project. I certainly know that it would free up some much needed storage space, but I guess you can't win them all.

You can get frosted glass sheets that you can stick to the inside of the glass doors to make the yarn inside less visible. Easy to install and pretty cheap and available online

I really like how you define "over consumption of yarn"! I totally agree with your view of being mindful and knowing yourself!!! That's definitely something I'm striving for in my yarn consumption.

If the mess in the glass cabinet makes you nervous, you can always put some milk or frosting film on the glass! I haven't figured out how to make my stash look nice myself, so I keep it in a drawer under my bed 😂

My top tip for stash busting/using is to use the feature on ravelry - it means I can quickly look at my stash without having to dig it out. That and it calculates if you have enough yardage for projects, I think I’m actually using my stash now because of it!

Lovely catching up on your sit and chat, Bethany. Just catching up on some episodes I have missed. Opinions are just that. Opinions. And you stated yours very well. It’s always good to get another perspective on things. For eg. Fast fashion. I went through the stage of not wanting to support ‘sweat houses’ because their workers are grossly underpaid. To us. But what if we all boycott those factories? Those poor people will be completely out of work. So while what these places are doing isn’t right, there is always another perspective. Let’s appreciate our privilege to an opinion while giving others the grace to have theirs. I loved the way you diffused possible controversial questions. Thanks Bethany.

6 weeks ago, I started learning how to crochet. I enjoy making stuff for people, not for myself, I find it more enjoyable that way. To know its going to go into good hands and belong by someone. Just today I shipped a Teddy Bear to my mom who lives in Wyoming. I also found out I'm slow when I crochet. But you know what, I like it this way, I really do. Slow and steady wins the race, I think the more you work on a project the longest the more joy you have. Nothing like sitting down after a long day to relax and crochet. So I feel ya on the same level.

Oh my! As soon as you mentioned "mother's wrist" I was flooded with flashbacks! 🙂 For me it was a combination of how I held my baby during breastfeeding and carrying the heavy, awkward carseat. At one point I started sleeping with a brace on my wrist... And I seem to remember magnesium helping as well (which is probably a part of your prenatal vitamins!). So lovely to listen to you chat.

I like to combine being intentional with my purchases (as in: buying something with specific projects in mind) and being spontaneous with a skein that just calls to me but that I know (because of colors and quantity) I'll use down the line but without a clear purpose yet. I like to knit socks so if I see a really nice sock yarn I'll get a skein and figure out the sock down the line, for example. But having a large stash also allows me to "shop" through it first. Like if I see a shawl that uses multiple skeins of different colors, I like to go through my stash, see what I have, play with different combinations and only then decide if I need to buy an extra skein to complete the set. Also buying sweater quantities of yarn I like but I don't have a specific pattern in mind yet allows me to be more flexible if a new pattern I like comes out; I actually just did that with some yarn I had that was going to go to one sweater but I just saw a new one that I'll like more so it's being redirected. I like that flexibiity that a large stash allows, but I think what has been key for me is knowing what I like and buying things I genuinely love and can work through later. If not, it's always good to have a large stash for when you're visiting a friend and you let them pick whatever they like as a gift.

If you are wanting to machine knit, I would buy a flat bed knitting machine with a ribber. You can knit so much on them. They are not that complicated to learn to use and a handknitter has an advantage using them. I’ve never used one of the round ones, but they seem so limited

I used to think like you when it came to my yarn stash. I got over it!😝 My panic has ALWAYS been not having or not having enough. It’s been that way since I was a kid. As a now older adult, I nab what I want - shiny and all - to my hearts content. Hubby and I still work full-time, our kids have grown. We don’t take vacations or get away cruises, we don’t have luxury homes or cars. I’m very content to know I have plenty to keep myself busy with. The recent pandemic really taught me that I need to keep extras of things I use most; yarn, cotton fabrics, elastic - do you KNOW how near impossible it was to get this during lockdown?😳 Talk about stash busting! I nearly went “dry” giving out my spare elastic to friends sewing masks! I’m blessed to have what I need to work on what I want to work on! Thank you Lord!❤️

Buy a roll of wrapping paper that suits your deco/style and bluetac it on the inside of the glass doors. Another idea is to print out photos and use each door like a photo frame. Pity you find the top rough as it looks great on you, better than pure black would. Could you wash it in hair conditioner?

I'm a machine knitter, not a sentro/Addi but a 200 needle flatbed and I can make everything. the flatbeds produce a tighter gauge which gives the same quality and tension as handknit. I can make a sweater with sleeves in just over an hour.I have a deformed hand so knitting on regular needles is difficult. The sentros/Addis produce (in my opinion) are poor quality for the amount of money they cost.

hi! I have been hand knitting for a few years and ive always had wrist issues from my computer job, and so knitting by and has always been a slow and sorta painful process. I got a sentro machine to help with flat knitting (because in the round is super easy on my hands personally, so I keep knitting sweaters in the round) this way I can make things like cardigans that would normally take me a year, and do them in like a week or two.

Thanks for the fun podcast. I got a lot of my husbands sock done! I'm not a fan of big stash myself. I can't handle the pressure to get it all worked up. I love buying for my next project (and maybe the one after that) but that's about it. I do have some extra yarn (leftovers from past projects) that I need to get worked up. I'm thinking maybe a mitered square blanket or something cuz those leftover skeins give me anxiety! :D

Needles are really a personal choice. I personally prefer wooden type needles. Ive worked out it has a lot to do with the way I knit. I am a relatively fast English style knitter. I say to people that if possible try before you invest in a particular type of needles. My preferred is the knitpro/knitterpride symfonie inter changeables and the double pointed for socks.
