I was browsing ebay listings for vintage sweaters, yarn and knitting patterns when I came across an unfinished project! I decided to try my hand at finishing and using this vintage crochet sweater - and I'm so glad I did!

I loved this project! I finished a quilt for a Loose Ends client, it had been sewn as a top by her late grandmother. We were matched, met over coffee and decided on the plan. The granddaughter sent me the batting and backing and I completed the quilt, including her grandmother's name embroidered on the back. Really satisfying and so appreciated.

That sleeve method, where you sew up the shoulders and sew the sleeves in flat, is my favorite way to "set in" sleeves on sewing projects, too. It's SO MUCH EASIER.

To set in a sleeve by the "tube method" IMHO only makes sense if you have to do some very specific and controlled easing or gathering, like in a tailored jacket. So, for a sweater, only with a very poufy sleeve head like the viral 1895 (was it?) bycicle sweater.

I was asked to finish a ripple blanket a woman had started for her husband. She developed dementia and couldn't finish it before she passed away. I had to unravel almost all of what she had done. I managed to keep the first 10 rows or so. It came with the pattern book and more than enough yarn. He and his family were delighted to see it completed.

When I first saw the title, I thought this was a Loose Ends project! I'm a finisher for them but I'm still awaiting my first project. I love that you finished this sweater and are giving it a second life!

How long has it been since you first registered with the LEP? I've just registered and I'm keeping my fingers crossed I get my first project once the summer holidays begins - being a student I sort of depend on that😅

So interesting! My grandma also showed me some old unfinished projects in a drawer - she just hates sewing things together, so there were at least three almost finished sewaters... I encouraged here to sew the pieces together - we'll see :D

It might help if you ask her to show you how to do it, or how she would do it, so you can work on it together. If you decide you like it sewing them up, you could offer to finish them for her. Sometimes rather than feeling pressured by un-completed tasks, people have to evaluate which parts they enjoy and are good at, things that they can tolerate doing sometimes, and which things they can outsource. If your grandma likes making pieces but not sewing up, you could suggest newer patterns that are done in the round to re-inspire her.

When my grandfather crocheted afghans for the family, my grandma would be the one to knit all the pieces together and finish them. They would add a tag with both their names because it was a group project. I know that's not the case with this unfinished project, but it made me think of them.

The way you explain the commercial sweaters being put together is the same way the cardigan I made a few months ago was. And it definitely is easier to do that way Also: I love that we can see your 1800’s dress peeking out from the closet in one of the clips

I agree that the commercial method of putting a jumper together is easier. My little variation (for set-in sleeves, such as you have here) is to sew one shoulder seam, then work the neck on the flat, then sew up the other shoulder seam. (This assumes that the neck can be worked on the flat, obviously, if it has to be worked in the round then join both shoulder seams first.) I usually do this half way through the knit because I might baulk at doing all the finishing and sewing in the one hit and just end up creating UFOs. Then I knit the sleeves, sew them onto the main part of the garment, then sew up the side seams and just go down the sleeve seams (or vice versa, or just meet in the middle!) I basically do the same sort of thing with cardigans. The other advantage with finishing the neck/bands half way through the project is that you don't have stitches on stitch holders, so that part of your project isn't in any danger while you complete the rest.

The sweater turned out really cute, actually surprisingly so. Your idea of how you plan to lengthen the sleeves is a wonderful idea. That will make it even cuter. I look forward to that alteration. Steaming it will look nice.

I love that there is a community willing to finish what others have begun. Well done for this one too. I don't care much for the pattern, although it suits you very well; it's very 80s - the oversize pattern and drop shoulders place it in that time frame. The 70s I'd say, were quite fitted and a 40s retro style was in vogue too.

Your Hybrid sweater is now done, but I wonder if knitting the ribbed portions with doubled yarn and a larger kneedle would have matched the heft of the crochet parts. I would make a swatch to determine if that made sense.

You said that the pattern was written for Unger Roly Sport yarn; this was a 100% acrylic yarn. The original crocheter who made this may have substituted Lion Brand Fisherman's wool yarn because she didn't like acrylic and wanted a natural fiber. This wool is 100% virgin wool in a worsted weight. One thing I am curious about is whether the pattern says to use one or two strands together of the Roly Sport weight yarn?

It turned out pretty. I find a lot of croched garments to be kinda clunky.. which is one reason I've longed to learn to knit for decades. I finally started taking knitting classes this year and am loving knitting. Will be finishing my first cocoknits sweater in the nexxt week or so, I'm on the sleeves. I also have a large collection of crochet and knitting books as I am an avid secondhand shopper. As my skillset shifts from accessories to wearables, I'm looking forward to exploring some if the vintage clothing patterns to see how they turn out 40-50 years post publishing. Good times!

This is so fun! You were lucky to find the project. My mom has some children sweaters that she never finished, because my nephews grew up too quickly without her realizing, or she ran out of yarn and it wasn't available anymore...she occasionally unravels one to make something for a new baby. It would be so cool to be able to finish one like you did here :)

Judging on appearance and comparing to my other vintage 80s and 90s yarn labels, I'd say that label is from the early to mid 90s. It looks very similar to a Caron Wintuk label I have dated 1993, with the style of color photo, upc code, etc. Unger was actually what started me buying up vintage 80s yarn lots! At first, I was just collecting 80s sweater patterns. I got one from Unger - loose leaf, just like this one, but dated 1984 (comparing its style to yours, my guess is your pattern is older, maybe 70s? without having a closer look) - for their Fluffy yarn and had to know what it looked like. But instead of just finding a picture, I found a lot of 5 balls (the amount the pattern called for) for super cheap. And then I had to have more 80s yarn. I don't think I've got anything else from Unger yet, so I really appreciate seeing more from them. Haven't made the sweater yet, but I hope to soon. Yours turned out so cozy looking! The long folded cuffs will definitely help!

I am loving the cozy cute vibes of your vintage fisherman's sweater...what a fun collaboration with a stranger ! Thank goodness the yarn is still available...I think your dog likes it a lot, too, probably because Lion Brand doesn't process out all the natural lanolin from the sheep's wool in the Fisherman's yarn. I just made my first vintage knit pattern from WWII from Monarch yarns for a pair of knickers that I wear under a skirt in the winter...and sometimes to bed LOL when it's been really cold ! I Love your fun and thought-provoking dives into knitting :)

Wonderful project ! The first sweater I made was a fisherman knit out of this wool brand ! My MIL was making me a sweater and passed away! My FIL gave the pieces to me Id never made a garment at that time So I git a pattern and charted it line by line ! I Finished it and then tackled the ufo ! All that remained was part of one sleeve I then sewed it and knit the collar It is very satisfying to be able to do the work! I only got to use the items one year as I became a mother and they no longer fit 😢 I do understand that everyones tension when knitting is different so I made a swatch before finishing the sleeve and was able to use her needles ! That made it extra special as she was a sweetheart ❤

Yeah, Lion brand fisherman's Wool Is about twelve thirteen dollars a skein right now , so i'm figuring that was about in the fifties or sixties

So cool that you had contact with the original artist/crafter! I have a back and forth fight with my craft supply hoarding tendencies. Knowing that things are going to someone who appreciates AND will use them really helps me feel good about passing them on and builds momentum toward releasing additional items. I often want to streamline and get things out of my space, but also hate knowing that my "gifts" are adding to someone else's deep stash/long term burden rather than completing or inspiring something they are actively and joyfully working on. Now if I could just get my mending bin under control and let go of things that I _could_ fix but realistically won't ever get around to. (Looking at you, worn out inseam leggings pile..)

This is such a cool project! I have a partially done quilt I bought second hand I have been wanting to finish… I was watching this video on my tv while knitting and I had made it about halfway through when my kitty joined me. When Nutella was sitting on the pieces while you were talking about seeming it up, she noticed her and started watching super closely! She wasn’t scared, just very curious 😂

What a great find. Was the original yarn from the pattern a superwash that would not have required blocking like Fisherman's Wool which is 100% wool? That sweater screams 1980's to me and looks like a lot of sweaters from that time. I have a sweater that my mom made me with a similar shape from around 1980. I think I would have made the ribbing with crochet. I learned how from a pattern years ago. HDC in back loops only gives a good approximation of knit ribbing and works if you don't know how to knit.

I just realized that when she said the name of the pattern it said popcorn, so it' the popcorn stitch. The bobble stitch and popcorn stitch are similar but differ slightly in execution.

The difference is seaming on commercial sweaters you talked about is interesting--I followed an early 1930s knitting pattern that instructed me to do that order of operations and I loved it

I love this the only thing that bothers me is the gaping sleeves I would see if you could slightly decrease the ribbed cuffs as you make you way to your fingers it would give you a slightly tighter hold around your wrist to help balance out the stretch from the heavy sleeves that's just my 2 cents.

That is a gorgeous sweater. I love Lion brand fishermans wool and have knitted a few sweaters with it, it's amazing the company is still around, it makes me glad. I also sew up my sweaters the way you showed. I learned it so long ago I forget where, but it does make things easier. I am the opposite of you in the arm department, I have short T-Rex arms and always have to alter patterns for shorter sleeves. 😁

I love that sweater! I may have to come back to take notes on the stitches and try to recreate it. And then, I’ll have to ask my mum to knit the ribbing because I still haven’t learned knitting. Or just crochet the ribbing as well.

Looks really great on. I was not so sure about the boxy shape, but it seams to really come alive when you are wearing it and I think the sleeve length is perfect for the style.
