I just had this diagnosed on my '12 Optima Hybrid. I had to look this up and came to your video and it totally explains this issue THANK YOU! The repair quote was above CAD$500. Not a mechanic so I will consider getting it done for my peace of mind and driving enjoyment. I was told it's not a safety issue. :D
Great video. I found with my i40 tourer RHD that I didn’t have to remove the steering column completely off the spline. The coupler was accessible after the steering column was dropped.
Thanks a bunch was a great guide, helped me successfully diagnose and fix the same issue in a 2012 i30 crdi. worked a treat. Just trying to work out how to reset the dash lights EPS and ESC.
Hi, great video, very well explained, got steering column and part replaced by your step by step guidance, brilliant and very explained, don't think I could have done it without this tutorial
Hi ! Thank you so much your video was so much helpful! I’ve done it myself and it worked! But unfortunately I lost my steering wheel position and I wonder if it’s something I can fix myself? Thanks!
@@RamoneBTW duuudddde samme car same problem lol idk what's wrong. When I first got the car it wasn't knocking but it did vibrates at 75 to 80 and that was because of my aliment. But now like 3 years later its knocking and vibrating.
Thank you for the video was really helpful, My grandsons and myself have just done my 2012 hyundai i40 1.7diesel estate, was a bit of a pain but well worth it no clunking noise now and no steering wobble under braking which i didnt find any comments about in any other threads, so if you have a steering knock and steering wheel wobble you can bet its that part. that wants changing and not the £400 + vat knuckle joint that hyundai wanted just for the part. Rip off merchants
I noticed that the '13 Elantra (3rd video) also had the airbag light on. Is that a possible symptom that could manifest from needing the coupler replaced? I've been tolerating the steering wheel for some time but just recently did my airbag light turn on when making turns, and only goes away if i drive straight for some time, only to come back when turning. When you repaired that Elantra did you happen to see if replacing the coupler also dealt away the airbag light??
This was helpful, but I have run into a problem on my Right Hand Drive Elantra 2013 AUTO. Got all the way to the pivot pin bolt at the back of the column, got it loose and out about half to 2/3 of the way when the bolt head hits into the brake pedal mounting bracket. It just does not clear past the bracket by a few mm. Did you have a similar issue and have a workaround fix perhaps?
Based on other video's I was sure its the coupler now I'm not too sure. You are the only video I've seen that addresses the possibly of the issue do to something else. Appreciate it... A questions I have is at the same time I noticed the side to side clunking I also noticed there is a vibrating/rattling sound coming from under the steering wheel. Any idea of the two are related? Just weird to me that it happened at the same time. I have no issues with ball joints, shocks/struts, steering wheel(drives straight) so not sure what the sound is. It only occurs sometimes when I drive over rocking road and but not when I hit dips. Sounds to me like there is something loose underneath and just banging around. Either way appreciate the video.
Same here, 2011 optima w sport suspension, clunking left and right like there's ball joints on the tie rods falling apart, and the other rattling by my feet. I got the wheels balanced and that was what was making the column rattle. It drives fine and runs incredible for a little 4 banger
Thank you Gerard. I've been told by my Hyundai dealer I need the whole steering column replaced on my i10. Some fault on certain models. Had it 8 years. Big bill. Not a mechanic.
I just did one of these last week and you don't need to remove the whole assembly. I happen to have the correct tools that made it easy and only took less than an hour. Just take the column loose so it can drop down to access the motor screws.
Great Video. I have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra so parts were in a slightly different place but it that was the problem and replacing the coupler fixed it. EPS light on now, I think I just need my mechanic to reset it. Thanks
@@russross1000 .Not according to the Hyundai, which is why there was no recall, just extended warranty. "NOTE: Wear of the coupling does not affect the ability to steer or control the vehicle and is not a safety issue." static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10110926-9999.pdf
I have 2010 kia Proceed. When moving steering wheel to both sides quickly it makes the noise and also it feels loose. Like it has a gap to both sides where it feels like it's not steering. Is that the same problem? And I can't find rubber part for proceed. There is for other models but not for mine. Are they all the same ?
@@FelipeBarbosa638 ok so here’s an update. Took it to the mechanic, it turns out the steering bush was INTACT. It turns out there’s something wrong with something called a steering rack?! I have no idea what that means, but I’m looking at a $1200 repair now. I’m now waiting for the part to be delivered. Once they replace it, hopefully the car drives straight (and of course, stops making noise while turning the wheel).
@@niconiconnu I did the government inspection today and the car didn't passed. Came out as steering rack as well... 1200$, that's a big sum. I hope this is the end of the noise and steering pulling to the left to you. Did you got it from the dealer and will be fitted privately or at Hyundai?
Hi Gerard great informative video,I recently had my mot on my i10 and the mot tester said there was slight play in the steering no mention of clicking have you any idea of what it could possibly be please many thanks.
I have a 17 elantra limited, and im having issues with the steering column, however, the noise isnt as pronounced as it was in the vid, and it feels like a clunking noise coming from WITHIN the column whilst turning the steering wheel with or without moving the vehicle. It happens during start up, while turning out of a parking space for example. Once I've driven the car for a couple seconds it isnt noticeable at all. Any idea what this COULD be?!
Hello, thanks for this details explaination I have a Hyundai Elantra MD 2015 same as the one in the video , i have a light steering noise as the one on 9:35 after you replace the little plastic piece, is it normal ?
Hi just watch your video .. when doing this when putting it all back together can something happen to make the car not run properly .when before removing everything replaced bush car was running perfectly. How not running .what could this mean please
My 2017 kia soul+ started doing this yesterday. Its got 50k miles but its 60 month warranty was up in October. Would this be covered under extended warranty? How much is this to replace at a shop?
hi, is this issue fatal if I dont fix it. (ie: fatal as in if I dont repair my interference timing belt and tit breaks, my engine will be destroyed...) and what is the worst damage not repairing this issue will do to my vehicle?
Hi Gerard, I have the same scenario with my kia sportage 2017, but it's barely audible, very faint sound. Is it fine if I just let it be? Or will it create bigger problems?
It will be fine as long as your not annoyed by the click. Which becomes a rattle once the bushing is fully disintegrated. I just did one today and it took about 30min and $13.99 for the flexible coupler.
@@sandovalwill88 So they arent dangerous to drive with this? What makes them break? My 2017 Kia Soul started to have this noise today and I cant get it in til Monday. I wonder how much its gonna cost. Ugh
I am facing the issue of occasional left pulling in Hyundai Elantra after calibrating the steering angle sensor as well, it is any symptom of bad flexible coupling..
Yes, it's possible.......makes things more frustrating, but definately possible. I've replaced this steering damper bushing on atleast 200 different Hyundai/Kia vehicles. Many different vehicles without taking the steering column completely out of the vehicle. You still gotta unbolt the steering column from the dash, the steering wheel will rest on the seat. Jack up the front of the car so that the wheels are off the ground. Have someone outside the car put their hands on the tires to turn them to the left while you turn the steering wheel AND steering column to the left.......just a little bit. Enough so that the electric steering motor is accessible. Another way to do it without having to jack up the front of the car would be to remove the front seat so that the column drops down further with the steering wheel resting on the floor (rather than up higher on the seat.
I have a 2013 i30 with the noise but the dealer checked the VIN and said my car is not covered to replace the coupler for free. I am not 100% sure it is the coupler. The car has 65K miles right now.
I have a 2013 Kia Soul I had the clock steering switch changed also new coupling put on which was a recall it but now its grinding behind the steering wheel and the car doesn't have any power steering refill anywhere it's troubling and I'm at a lost. So do the power steering part needs to be replaced?
There is an extended warranty (TSB) for this problem with the MDPS steering coupler 10 yrs/ 100k miles. I just got my 2013 Sonata fixed for free by the dealer. Also for 2015 - 2017 Sonata the warranty has been extended to 15 yrs /150k miles. The warranty covers original and subsequent owners. Just do a search for Hyundai TSBs.
Great Video!! Mine looked different than yours. On the 2013 Elantra pull the black bolts, not the smaller silver ones to get the motor off the column. Also we didn't remove the column from the car. we just layed the steering wheel in the driver's seat.
Is this the same coupler for a Kia Venga 2, having trouble trying to identify the correct coupler for the Venga, can anyone confirm the correct coupler for a 2010 Kia Venga 2.
Would be really great full if you can answer this, so up untill I watched this video I thought it was my little plastic coupler I needed to replace but I got under the steering wheel abs checked the uni joint abs it sounds really cluncky in there , how do I fix that problem , you dident seem to elaborate on that
Hey, I'm having the same exact issue - did you manage to diagnose it? I'm not 100% sure of where the noise is coming from. I have heard another guy on RU-vid say to hold onto the uni joint/steering shaft and see if you can feel the knocking while turning the wheel. I can feel the knocking and it also sounds like it's coming from the lower uni joint but I am not sure. If you hold the steering shaft do you feel the knock? You can also try putting your head next to the pedals under the dash while turning the wheel to see if sound is coming from below or above where the motor is? Let me know if you end up fixing it! Good luck!
@@zeRaxx hey, I got under the steering wheel and checked out the uni joint, if you focus on where the coupler should be it sounds like it’s coming from there , but also when you look at the uni joint it sounds like the noise is there aswell , I will have to closely inspect it abit more , thanks for your comment!
@@Jkstudioshq Thanks for the update :) Yeah it's quite hard to tell where it's coming from. I think I might aswell just try to replace the motor coupling/bushing today and if that doesn't fix it, then nothing else I can do apart from taking it to a garage to get it looked at/diagnosed... Check out the bolts that keep the uni joints connected, they could be loose and might just need tightening. Did you also try holding your hand on the steering shaft and turning the wheel - was there any vibration? Keep me updated if you find out anything else! :)
@@Jkstudioshq I fixed it!! Took me a couple of hours as I've never really done something to this scale and struggled with getting the bolt at the back out (that's holding the back of the steering column up) and then putting it back in and getting it to bite on the threads... But apart from that wasn't too hard! Could do it in 30 minutes now probably. Steering feels a lot nicer now though, worth the effort in my opinion! What car do you have - I did this on an i40.
