I am a hyundai technician, just a little heads up. There is a warranty extension for this coupler, to 100,000 miles. Also, there’s no reason to remove the cluster or the smart junction box (fuse box). Just remove the two 12mm bolts and two 12mm nuts to drop the steering column. Way easier and faster. Take care.
Very helpful! I just started hearing the noise and thought I would have to pay to repair. You're right about the warranty. Here's the link where you can enter your VIN number and check to see if your car is covered: autoservice.hyundaiusa.com/TXX7/MicroSiteTemplate/MicroSiteTemplateVINValidate/2687
RealTechReview hello I have Hyundai Elantra 2007 gls electric assist rack pinion and I have the same sound ..is it rack problem or this coupler and how I can do it pls ?
I finally took the time to go for it yesterday, and everything worked out great. That aggravating clattering noise I used to get when I went over bumps is gone, and steering feels firm. It might have been easier if I’d dropped the steering column, but I wanted to avoid the potential issues others have had with that. So, I followed this video's process. It took some work and persistence, but I’m glad I did it this way. It took me an hour and 45 minutes, a little sweat and $1.20 for the part. Thanks to everybody who contributed info and advice on this!
Oh my... Thank you x 5 gazillion. You have saved my sanity because that noise has been driving me insane for a little over a month with every bump in the road and every turn of the steering wheel. I've had someone tell me the steering column needed to potentially be replaced to fix the issue. That I'm sure is not cheap repair. I was actually lurking the Veloster Forum for the fitment size for dual transmission gear shift knob for 2013 Base model when I coincidentally ran across a reply that shared the link to your video. So freaking stoked that I clicked on that link. My husband will be in total disbelief when I hand him the part in a couple of days, share this video with him & tell him all he has to do is replace this one small part on my Veloster to make me the (even more so) happiest wife in the world. I've already done the most difficult part.... Identifying the problem & ordering the correct part, of course you really deserve all of the credit. So again thank you for taking the time to create informative videos that make auto repairs easier for those of us that aren't (auto) mechanically inclined but can follow well given instructions. Can't donate a whole lot right now but hopefully every little bit will help.
Love these “do it yourself” videos. My 2013 Elantra had same problem. Hyundai said it was NOT covered. Your video points out a few “hidden” screws I would have missed, and I would never have known about the torque 30 tool needed until after you have dropped the steering column! My Elantra has adjustable steering column so it was a little different at back. One large bolt the column pivots on. The “hook” is in back. Unbolting the fuse box helps you get to the motor easier, but I did NOT unplug anything. You don’t need to. The less you disturb the better! Don’t forget to center the wheel BEFORE disconnecting the battery. Thanks again you saved me $350
This is a long shot but if you happen to read this: Any chance you can go into more detail on the last bolt that lets it drop in your model? I have the same model and it doesn’t drop all the way like in this video but I think I saw the bolt you’re talking about when I was under there. I was too worried to remove it though.
i did make use of this video to fix my 2018 sonata , everything went well but getting to that upper scroll on the motor took a while so please make sure you get all the tools required before you start . but i just want to say this video is 200 % legit. and thanks a lot for doing this video....i saved my self 300 dollars

Great video, and very helpful comments from others. My daughter owned 2, 2011 and 2014 Sonata Sedans. Both vehicles had this issue after about 90K miles and 110K miles. Hyundai covering the costs of this repair for vehicles under warranty up to 10 years after purchase or 100K miles is negligent. 100K miles is sparse on today's cars that can easily have well over 200K miles with proper maintenance.
Thanks for this vid (though the deconstruction just to get to the failed part made my head swim!). BUT also thanks for the comments that this part is apparently covered by the 100K warranty! I have a 2013 Elantra GT hatch that has a bit of play/"ka chunk" sound in the steering column, so I'm gonna check with the dealer ASAP!
I did mine a few weeks ago all by myself. I have to drop the whole steering assembly to gain an easy access to the motor. You will also need a jack to assist you in lifting the steering assembly to its original mounting spot. It was well worth my time to replace a $3.00 part.
Hello, I took the steering wheel column fully out and it took an hour + and a lot of energy to put it back. The labour cost alone on this is 400-600 dollars while the part is 10$. Did it myself overall. Good advice on your method but the screw we had to deal with on the motor was stripped from manufactures. Took a little longer but fixed.
Thank you brother! We just bought a car from an auction and we had the same clunking going on. It's funny because I'm driving back from the auction house upset about this and I'm watching your video in the car and I couldn't tell if it was the car clunking or your video at the beginning and that's when I knew 🤣🤣🤣
OMG! Thank you very much for this video! I just failed inspection for this clicking sound......I am about to take my Kia to the dealership if this is a recall part.
You knowi have a kia rio 2015 and it has a clicking sound every time the car vibrates bcos of tye road and the noise came from d steering column. The casa charged me 90thousand pesos for the entire replacement of the steering column. Good thing i saw your video. More blessings to you dude.
My Mentor Oz Mechanics Thanks for sharing what you know with us a great video, take care and have a great evening with all your family around you ACCOMPLISHED Oz Mechanics From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧
I have a 2012 Optima and it's so annoying it does do that. My car is at 105,770 miles on it now. I should have just stuck with Toyota. So many annoying problems with my optima
Stupid engineers couldn't orient the motor downwards, or at least sideways, in order to get easier access to it ? Especially when they knew that Hyundai would save pennies on ultra cheap lovejoy rubber couplings that would surely fail ! Thanks for showing us how to replace it.
Tired Old Man really??? I just had a recall done to the engine, they didn’t mention this part and the steering is definitely clicking smh thanks man...
@@ReefCakes Thats how they are. They just dont care. We had the engine recall also. It cleared the inspection and they warrantied it for life. We had problems with the steering wheel sticking for years. We would turn the steering wheel and would just stay there. They said "we cannot figure it out" . Then the problem got so bad we were afraid to drive the car. Take it to the dealer and tell them to fix or you will sue them. Worked for us. P.S. they fixed ours for free but im thinking its going to happen again down the road...
Thank you so much for the video!!! I have this problem on my 2012 Hybrid along with when I hit bumps it sounds like the column is going to fall out!!! Any idea what that could be? Thanks again
Could not unfasten those 2 top bolts on the fuse box. Doesn’t seem clear from this video on how to do it either at least in my 2013 veloster. Think I’d need a special tool. Dropping steering column tomorrow and am close, but just suffice to say..anyone attempting this that hasn’t done this kind of work like me this has taken 4+ hrs so far.
Hi , even after replacing coupler sound started to come after one week, when checked again the rubber coupler was damaged again in 4 days, what could be the possible reason
@@kevinjohnson1958 go for it, its not that difficult, bit short of space but I got there in the end with very limited tools and the rubber part for less than £10 on eBay. Couldn't find a garage that would do it, they all wanted to replace the entire column. Best of luck to you
I went to the dealership today, its covered, im so happy!!! people check first with them, they put my vin in and told me its covered, some are some are not, depends on some factors, mine is a 2011 with 37k miles and im the original owner, maybe that's it? good luck but check with your dealer first!! :-)
Rina Yes, the warranty extension covers 10 years from original purchase or 100k miles, whichever comes first. Unfortunately for me, I'm at 133k. :-( I really don't feel like fixing this myself, but I refuse to pay the going rate for labor, so...
am not sure if mine has the same problem its not this loud and i can feel it when i touch the tires and have someone swing the steering could this be the same issue before i begin to tear down the steering thanks guys for any contribution
Man they just charged us 400 for the Labor of replacing this part and an alignment... i feel like we got ripped off but I mean it’s something I’m not familiar with so was the price good? Just want to know so we can keep using their services because they were very good people and their customer service was amazing.
My 2012 Elantra allowed me to complete 90% of the disassembly as shown in the video....however, the steering column refused to drop to the seat level...... the motor part hindered by a cross a/c conduit piping running horizontal behind the instrument panel. The conduit prevent the column from dropping far enough to allow me access to unscrew the (3) T-30 bolts .... smh! (Reassembly was a snap....but, now the FM radio is acting up, when I press rear window defrost) lol
Hello. What about a single clunking noise and physical knocking right beneath the gas+brake floor mat when brake pedal is released on a kia sorento 2016? Thanks a lot in advance for your good advice.cheers
We buy a 2013 use sonata and we have the same problem, many comments say it’s under warranty if under 100000k wish we had 75k on it , any Hyundai dealers would fixed for fee?we get the car from a local dealer who actually go out of business a few after wee get the car
Perfect video. I'm second owner so of course it isn't covered and going to have to try this out myself. 1 question... At the same time I noticed the side to side clunking I also noticed there is a vibrating/rattling sound coming from under the steering wheel. Any idea of the two are related? Just weird to me that it happened at the same time. I have no issues with ball joints, shocks/struts, steering wheel(drives straight) so not sure what the sound is. It only occurs sometimes when I drive over rocking road and but not when I hit dips. Sounds to me like there is something loose underneath and just banging around. Either way appreciate the video.
So Hyundai/Kia move the bulk of the steering torque from inside the rack and pinion itself (hydraulic system) to up on top of the steering column? Imagine a super strong armed guy moving the steering wheel without any power assist at the rack and pinion. Whom ever tried to rotate wheels with engine off (key in lock to prevent locking the column) knows what I am talking about. And Hyundai/Kia didn't resize anything for this 10x higher torque... Just added a puny piece of rubber in there. What can go wrong? Ah, and this change from tested and tried hydraulics to electric was done just to gain probably some 0.1 gallon per mile on gas mileage.
I appreciate you offering your insight but there was no way I was able to reach those torx screws on the motor. I had to drop the steering column like the Hyundai technician guy said on my 2011 sonata se.. it was much easier doing that and there was no issue with steering column alignment and sensors as previous comments mentioned. it was actually quite easy getting everything reassembled . I only wish you had shown how you were able to unscrew the 3rd torx screw doing it your way and what kind of torx tool you used. I had an L style torx and a ssd socket / ratchet style... neither of which would reach and properly seat on the torx screw .... I couldn't figure out how you removed it your way. thanks for your video .I wish it had worked for me
I have the same problem on 2010 kia ceed SW 1.6 Crdi EX ISG. I'd like to know if the coupler piece on the description works for me. Thanks for the video, a great job.
The fact that this video has 190,000 views tells you that this is a BIG problem and that it should be a recall problem. I started hearing this noise a couple weeks ago and took it in. I have a 2012 Sonata with 68,000 miles. SO, out of warranty and wrong year for the issued recall. The dealer quoted me $260 to change it out. Maybe I'll just wait a while until they actually do issue a recall for 2012's.
i have a kia ceed 2010 with the steering wheel locking in place when i drive faster. İt is like the wheel is sticking and wont move while driving straight and when you apply more pressure to steering wheel to stay in lane it suddenly lets go and this time you have to correct again. Could this part the reason for a "sticky" steering wheel as well?
Hi, Oz. Thanks for this video. Like VALMER LYNN, my Sonata needs this part replaced, AND my Sonata starts to vibrate right about 60mps. Is it more likely the vibrations caused this part to fail, or the failed part caused the vibrations? Guess I'll find out when I get it fixed.
I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata having ~98,000 miles with clunk steering noise. Would this be same part? If Hyundai will replace it under warranty, great, otherwise I know I will be replacing it during my vacation week in October...
Hyundai purposely use such fragile material to force every owner back to their workshop for replacement every 4-5 years? If not, why there is no recall even they knew this part is vulnerable?
heath ogle hmm never experienced that before. I would look for codes and see if they can get cleared. Did you put everything back the way you removed it
What is this piece called? My daughter has a 2012 Hyundai Ellantra GLS and has the same problem when she turns her steering wheel. I’m trying to get prices but I want to know what the piece is called and where to change it. Do I change it in the motor or do I change it in the steering wheel?
I have this issue with my 2013 Elantra GT with 84k miles. I called the nearest dealer (have had bad experiences with them in the past) and gave them my VIN. They said it is not covered. Is there any way to check to see if the dealer is lying about whether it is covered. I used the NHTSA website to check the VIN for recalls, but none were reported. However, I keep seeing people saying that their Hyundai dealer covered the repair. Mine said it would be $350.
Spencer Rogers- Call the Hyundai corporate office!! File a complaint the number is 1-800-633-5151. I will NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER HYUNDAI In my Life!! I've had 5 since 2002 til now!! Smh I just got this problem today!! The dealer told me to come back sometime next week. I'll be there at 6:50 a.m tomorrow morning!!
Just replaced mine but now my car won't start. I rechecked all the plugs, battery cable, took battery to have it tested and was good. Not sure what the deal is. Maybe just coincidence or my keyfob battery?
Hi - I got a mobile mechanic to fix this for me. Now my EPS light is on. Does anyone know why this might be. Someone told me it could be because he did not reprogram it. Any suggestions. Thanks so much in advance
Is this a manufacturer defect, recall, or under warranty?? I have the same problem, I have a 2011 Sonata with 37k miles, please help! Will the dealer cover this and how do I get them to do it, I only have 37k miles, this should not happen, this is a safety thing , my steering! :-(
I also have a 2011 Sonata. Be aware that the 2011 Sonata has a Engine recall, my engine blew at 109000 miles. Dealership had to replace for free even though it was out of warranty.
Rina it's not a safety issue but you can have it replaced for free under the extended warranty Hyundai offers of 10 years 100,000 miles. Just contact your local dealer. If they give you a hard time, tell them to refer to service bulletin 17-ST-001.
My 2011 Sorento has steering noise since last year, local garage want to charge US$120 for labour and $300 for the complete chunk, do bother to take off all the parts to access the problem and replace the tiny parts
I have the same clunking noise in my steering wheel when i turn it left to right on my 2011 KiA Optima so i know this part is what i need. Question: i also have a very bad vibration in the steering column when i hit any bumps or potholes when i'm driving. Is this vibration because of the same worn part or is there something else i need to look for while i have all of this torn down?
I have an Elantra and I have the exact same problem and was told it was my intermediate shaft and and I replaced it for nothing... Ok my question is would I need to align the column or steering or something when replacing the coupler and do I need any special tools?
just make sure when doing the job to not rotate the steering wheel full turns when its off. and for tools what makes the job easier is having smaller hands and arms. no special tools needed
Definitely have this issue with my 2012. I also have a slight front tire shake when driving above 60mph. The shake gets worse above 75 so I tend to ease off on the pedal when it does. It's also way more noticeable in temperatures above 30 degrees F. At first I thought it was due to unbalanced tires, but now I'm not so sure. Could this one flexible coupling cause both issues?
I had shaking when going over 60mph and it was because I needed a mount and balance along with a wheel alignment. That fixed the shaking whEn going over 60mph but there’s still a steering shaking problem when turning the wheel and going over bumps so it’s a separate issue.
