Epidemic curves are a visual representation of the onset of cases in an outbreak. In this video Dr Greg Martin explains how to interpret and epidemic curve for point source outbreaks, common source outbreaks and propagated outbreaks. Epidemiologists and public health professionals use epi-curves (or epidemic / epidemiological) curves to better understand infectious disease outbreaks.
This video was created with support from the University of Notre Dame. Find out more about their program here: ntrda.me/2btUrXb

Helps a lot with Science Olympiad! The event “Disease Detectives” has a lot of epidemiology references in it so this video and others are a big help!

Well done, sir. I hold that scientists and engineers who make things "simple" are, in fact, the best thinkers

Dr. Greg, your videos are educative and they serve as a guide to some of us offering health courses like Public Health. But i personally find it interesting in listening with such a speed that i cannot estimate it to be. You obviously have to slow down a bit and help send the required message necessary to comprehend by us the audience. Thanks and may God the Almighty bless you for your relentless efforts in impacting people.

Thanks a lot, Doctor Greg. I appreciate your hard work in producing a well-established and sophisticated channel to discuss those complicated concepts in simple terms. Which benefits both doctors and the general public. I found this video very useful for my medical studies. Amazing job!

Great job Greg! Suggestion, could you slow down the speech delivery? It will make it easier for non native English speakers to grasp the content of your presentation. Very interesting

Hello. You've done a great job in sharing your knowledge and helping everyone out here. I have a question. After forming an epidemic curve, how can we predict the number of cases for the future, keeping in view the trend in the factual curve? Is there something more complex? Any other program than excel?

Greg the fees for the Masters are huge. it would cost me more to do my masters than buy the plot of land we're going to be building on soon. Am I missing something? Also it is distance learning? I couldn't see for sure, but it seemed to be class based. Could you clarify?
@gregmartin
@gregmartin 7 лет назад
Hi Catherine, You are right - Masters programs do close a lot (especially if you're studying in the US and paying in South African Rands). The problem is made more difficult by the fact that, in Europe for example, subsidies are available to EU citizens and not for students coming from abroad. The only comfort that I can offer is that once you start looking, there are scholarships and support mechanisms out there that provide a lot of help. Distance learning is also an option as you can study and work at the same time and don't have the expense of living abroad. The Masters of Science in Global Health that I spoke of in the video is not a distance learning program per se (but I can find out what Notre Dame offers in terms of distance learning options and get back to you). Anyway - I hope that all is well in South Africa. Take care! :) Greg

Thank you for making this helpful explanatory video. I just watched it on January 29th 2020 during the time that China is under the shadow of 2019-nCoV. Your effort to enhance awareness of prophylaxis is highly appreciated. I am personally interested in 'propagated outbreak' that you mentioned, especially its growth pattern. Is the epi curve of propagated outbreak similar to a exponential growth pattern? Slow at beginning but skyrocketing as time runs? If possible, could you make an extra video about that ?
