From the master.....Herbie Hancock said of her vocals, "there's so much jazz in the notes and phrases that she picks. She was singing the ninths, the elevenths of the chords...I mean some of the things sound like choices that Miles would have made." For damn sure indeed.....
@@Guitargate No....You do sir, for bringing this kind of talent and excellence to the forefront! Along with your obvious desire and dedication to the guitar and music in general.....
So good! And I absolutely love how much you love music it makes me love it even more and want to pick up an instrument every single time after I watch a video and I do 99% of the time literally lol :-) also, your intro is so true in all wakes of life, that's a line of wisdom is what that is 😊🤘
Oh p.s. you are wonderful I really wish I could have had you as a music teacher. Also heres a little something. I don't care if you make a video about this but have a listen. I think you might enjoy it. There are some really lovely harmonies. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qHU0xigLx5s.html

Alrighty Mr Michael Palmisano, here’s the deal: Great channel and enthusiasm and content. As a musician who played in multiple bands (jazz, country, rock, bluegrass - you name it) with relative success but no big break, and being a guitar player who’s played since I was 6 - I got burnt out 2 years ago and just sort of stopped playing. I’m 30 now, and barely picked up my guitar over the past 2 years except when I’d feel guilty for not playing every few months, and play for 5 min or so. I had hit a wall/ceiling, just plain burnt out. But finding your channel, I’ve been *learning* things again. Even if it’s just giving words/terms to techniques I’m already familiar with, it’s still filling in more pieces to the ever expansive puzzle that is music. I’ll see you say something about thirds/inverted chords or whatever it is and I’ll say “oh yeah, that, I know that” - and then pick up the guitar to find myself not putting it down for an hour. Your wonder for music and tasteful guitar playing has reignited my playing. It’s like getting back in touch with an old friend. I appreciate it, your work, and the channel. Thank ya sir Edit- the main drawing point for me, is seeing the way your head will bob and move and your face react to certain changes in the chords/melody in the exact same way music affects me. That told me from the first video I saw that “this guy knows what’s up”
He got me playing again too man. I get it. It wasn't the music for me. Instead, it was the treacherous people and the bars. I grew to despise bars and clubs. Stayed out of them for nearly 15 years. Glad you found the passion again. It's good for the soul. Play for yourself and you will always be happy!
Thank you for this Cameron. That's literally why I do what you do, and It's amazing to hear it from you. You made my day when I really needed it. All the best my friend.
I don't even play guitar (more classical piano and some traditional instruments and styles) but I really appreciate his love of what makes music powerful and compelling. Sometimes we get lost in technique and forget the whole point of things. Go ahead and sing in the shower and find a reverie on a cold autumn night that soothes your own soul. Music is a gift but the sharing part comes from the self-centered part of experiencing it within.
100%. I haven’t played in years, from playing every day, lots of swing and Latin Jazz. This makes me want to play again. Definitely going to look into his guitar courses to try to get myself back at it. Miss this so much and seeing his passion is just rejuvenating.
I remember that this was released during the pandemic and when live music concerts were out of bounds - it lifted the spirits of so many of us in Ireland - the pure joy they are experiencing in singing live was contagious...both of them are insanely talented and together were just fabulous...
All 3 of her albums purchased, and a shit ton of RU-vid consumption later... thank you Michael! I didn’t know my life was missing Lisa Hannigan’s music until you showed me this. Safe to say this wasn’t a one off. She is a class act.
I first noticed Lisa Hannigan on Damien Rice's "Unplayed Piano" years ago and I have been following her ever since. Her vocals on several of Rice's songs knocked me out and still resonate with me today. She is among the best Ireland has to offer!
Yeah, I was not prepared for her voice. It's Smokey, breathy, light, powerful, and crystal clear, somehow all at the same time. Her pitch is dead on accurate. Truly amazing.
I'm not a musician but: really enjoyed witnessing a newbie's reaction to Lisa. Been a hopeless fan for over ten years. I'm an old guy that listens to tons of new artists. Very few songwriters can effortlessly bring me to tears. Knock me down with a feather. Glad others can sense her absolute magic.
It’s one of my favourite songs of the year. This performance was supported by the government of Ireland along with other voices to bring the arts to Irish citizens during COVID lockdown. What a performance by them both.
I usually hate reaction based channels. But you, sir, break down every detail of what makes these people so talented. Your enthusiastic reactions are just a bonus to the insight. Great stuff, keep it coming!
"Even if you don't know music you know something special happened" - that run instantly piqued my interest in the song and then the melodies in the chorus. Sublime.
That "Major third" slapped me right in the face. I'm one of those that doesnt know squat , but knew "something special happened there".....now I understand why, ty!! This is beautiful..soothing balm for the soul. Exceptionally gifted vocalist. Once again...TY! Gotta go find more of Lisa.
Man this video is killing me. Been a huge fan of Damien and Lisa for soooo long. The enthusiasm for music makes this AMAZING. Wish you lived in NJ, I’d be knocking on your door for lessons yesterday.
Mr. Palmisano- Sometimes you're too music-happy for your own good. ..and I love everything about it! The joy and excitement you're able to convey through listening to and dissecting a song is a very great and special gift. I'm so glad you use your talents for good. Keep being you, man. I believe you truly deserve every ounce of success, popularity, and financial support you receive from all your hard work, dedication, and continued perseverance. Keep inspiring! Sending peace & love from Missouri -Todd ..if you get a quick moment, check out a live version of "Arms of a Woman" by Amos Lee. I know you get an overwhelming amount of recommendations, but I think it's one of those songs that just has the magic.
Dude, I couldn't agree more. Watching his videos is a lot like dissecting a song in the lecture hall was in music school. I love this kind of shit. On this particular song, the intention is unmistakeable. The intimacy of the performance makes the ambiguity of the melody really shine too. Much like life, some of the best musical moments are the ones that happen in the grey area between keys.
I am in no way a musician, played cornet as a kid for a year or 2. However the enthusiasm is captivating. The time you take to allow us to get into the right space to full appreciate song, astounding. The music I find from your channel, sublime. I find myself very shut off and off handish towards unfamiliar or different music, but you sir just have a way of opening that door and making it so inviting. Love Love Love this channel, please keep up the amazing work!
Michael, man. Every now and then one of your videos just hit the spot absolutely perfectly. And this is one of them. THANK YOU. This is the best song I've heard all year. What a performance.
Jesus christ for some reason when they both started singing it sent chills down the entire left side of my body. Like Goosebumps like I have never felt in my life
This was shot for Other Voices - a musical programe for RTE, our national broadcaster in Ireland. They've had some INCREDIBLE performances over the years! Definitely worth a look up! The Frames with Glen Hansard (Lisa's done some work with him before) are among my favourite. I remember watching this when it aired on telly on Other Voices. Phenomenal stuff! Loving the channel Michael and greetings from Ireland! :)
Just called in because your appreciation was mentioned in Lisa's video comments. I love this song so much, love those harmonies and harmonics are simply just "getting it" in song. You've basically explained to me why I love what I love; and I think I get it. I think..
What a pleasant surprise it was finding this video! I have followed Lisa career for a decade - from a time when she was considered little more than Damien Rice's sidekick, through her wonderful first album "Sea Sew" (critically acclaimed by many but equally dismissed as lightweight and "plinky plonk" music by some) through her second album "Passenger" and then, her standout achievement in my opinion, her third album "At Swim". Part concept album with nautical themes woven throughout "At Swim" was chosen as the Sunday Times album of the week (as well as "Undertow" check out the stunning "We Then Drowned" and "Prayer for the Dying" on youtube). Part of me is delighted to see Lisa get the attention she deserves but I also selfishly want her to remain a "hidden" talent! As well as being a superb vocalist (Lisa seemingly dreamed of being an opera singer as a child) she is a mulit-instrumentalist, playing guitar, ukulele, mandolin and harmonium. If you search for her duet with John Smith of "Tonight You Belong to Me" you'll see she even does a mean mouth trumpet!
That was insane! This is the best video on the internet. The girls sound, your reaction and the breakdown. As a guitar player......this blew my mind. I hear the goodness but didn't understand why it sounded so badass. Excellent explanation.
Saw her almost 30 years ago in a little pub here in germany and immediatly felt in love with that voice ... this love still exist. This song really blows my mind .... thnx for analizing.
Amazing video Michael! You said it all! I love the way you break down songs with intervals. It makes so much sense. Thanks for that! Cheers from Brazil!
Absolutely beautiful. Your nuanced breakdown and the emotion you convey is something I've felt hundreds of times with various songs. Its a double whammy for me...you...them. I'm verklempt!
Thank you so much for doing this... Lisa is my favorite artist, and she deserve all the support of the world, she is kinda underground. She has an charmed voice. I’m in love with it 💜
Thank you, genuinely thank you, for showcasing this amazing performance. I paused after hearing the first few phrases she sang, went and began seeking out Lisa's music. She's a gem, and you've explained exactly why. I'm a musical novice and recognized immediately how special this performance is.
This really is incredible. Sounds like what you would hear when youre going towards the light. Angelic. Love the breakdown of why exactly this hits so hard.
I love Lisa Hannigan. Got turned on to her through the animated film Song of the Sea. I bought At Swim then her other 2 albums. Her song Ora brings a tear to my eye every time. And the video captures the feel totally.
Wow. Have an entirely new appreciation for Lisa's vocals. Always loved her with Damien Rice, but this is a whole new level. She's is incredible. Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks again! So much great stuff here. Thank you for speaking to the non musicians from time to to time. I cannot really describe why I love watching your videos so much. I really do listen to music in a whole new way now!
Thank you. Seeing the joy in your face makes it really good, the explanation makes it so profound. Thank you so much for sharing your insights about this.
The level of pure joy that the songs you review give you as you watch and listen is extremely refreshing. You can tell when someone truly feels music in their soul.
Part of their joy is the mischievous sense of finding a creative way to get away with all of this rule bending in a way that expresses such emotional beauty and nuance.
There is a marvelous serendipity about you finding this song. I found this song in lockdown and loved it, pretty much the same time that I found and started enjoying your videos. Very cool the two musical strands have crossed and I now get why this is so good.
Stumbled on your channel because of Eddie tribute, loved it, then saw this. Blown away by her, your visceral gleeful reaction and your excellent breakdown. This is what youtube was made for. Pure joy.
It’s one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen and heard. Their harmonies, their connection, the space around them, it’s just incredible. I’ve watched it so many times and am still blown away by Lisa’s ethereal tone and range. Watching you enjoy it as much as I do is a wonderful thing too!
That was unearthly. I really like the way you always point out that the great musicians, from singers to guitarists, blend major & minor. It really does prove that music can communicate a lot of things. It can convey emotions, take you on a ride, or paint a picture in your head. it's amazing what those 7 notes, along with their sharps and flats, can do. Love the passion, and the keen ear. Keep up the good work.
I love how Lisa and Loah play off each other whether it be a mutual and knowing look, a smile or their individual movements and those harmonies....!!! Sooo good. You mentioned the Yin and Yang of the whole song and I find that also in their individual voices....Lisa very clear and pure and angelic, as you described and then Loah with an equally angelic quality but more of a warm, smooth, rich and smokey timbre to her voice....Fantastic contrast that sounds so damned good together. Balance is the word that comes to mind. I am now completely smitten with both of these beautiful and talented musicians. Thank you for this!
Micheal, watching your mind and heart explode in appreciation of such an amazing artist... I now consider you not only a respected teacher, but also a dear friend. The first time I heard Damien and Lisa stopped me in my tracks, like when I heard Stevie Ray play " Little Wing" , or when I heard Dallas Green's solo version of "happiness by the kilowatt". Lisa and Damien have so much soulful material, I encourage anyone who's not familiar to give them a listen. They still inspire me to be a better human being, a more truthful and soul expressing artist, and even to write a RU-vid comment to the ether hoping someone will find and appreciate something new. Thanks!
I love this, Michael. Thanks so much. I played along with you and understood your lesson/observations pretty much in one take. In the end there, I heard them come back to the D before you said it. In 25 minutes I learned something that tied a lot of things together for me. Thanks again.
Damn, you're really digesting their greatness, it's so great to watch! Love Lisa for years now, react to more songs of her, there are soo many great live performances out there
Thank you, thank you for the breakdown. It's wonderful to have the why and what of the song as well as the love of the music. Brings the enjoyment to another level. Also - gotta love the audience on the stairs. Thanks.
Lisa is irish. It is common in irish folk music to mix minor and major and play around with the concept of being niether - The tunings Dadgad and CGCGCD for example draws from this. The rythem reminds me of The irish and icelandic handheld drum
This was my first thought! The melody sounded Irish to me, so that make sense. Absolutely stunning note choices. It draws you right in and makes you listen to every phrase to hear what comes next.
@@superdriver777 Yes! I also sensed the Irish melody, the Hair thing made it obvious to me, I also love the DADGAD tuning, once you figure out how to use it, you don't wanna go back
It is more complex than this even. A lot relates to the kinds of scales in traditional music as compared to our modern conceptions of 8 note scales. 6 note scales provide even more room for major/minor variation and actually underpin the way the mind listens to 8 note scales anyways, so might as well take the freedom afforded ye!
Stumbled across Undertow on RU-vid and had to play it 50 times before moving on. So naturally RU-vid suggested I watch your video later on. Loved seeing you totally nerd out over how minimalistic, yet packed, this performance is. But I have to say I loved discovering Lisa infinitely more... :)
2:06 This...THIS is one of the MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS YOU CAN EVER LEARN!!!! It is literally the KEY to true understanding, and applies not only to music, but to EVERYTHING!!!
I discovered the Undertow video two weeks ago. Have been listening non-stop. I do not play guitar, but I sing. And there is a lot to learn about singing from this as well. Pure genius.
Dude its hard to describe as a relatively new member of your channel and as someone with very close to zero knowledge in musical theory how much I appreciate your video's. Your appreciation for all the artists doing their own things puts a smile upon my face partially because you can musically explain why I have a smile on my face... Thanks for all you do.
Just wanted to mention that I think I've probably never commented on anyone's RU-vid channel. This video and others I've seen where you're exposing people to new music, across genres and music that's simply raw and powerful... man, I really enjoy this channel and your format. Thank you and keep it up.
Lisa truly is an angle, saw her perform with Damien rice many moons ago, that combination of sheer beauty she exudes from every pore with the rough musical genius of Rice. Different level!! Possibly the best gig I've been too
I just started learning music theory and playing the guitar, even though I was not able to follow you throughout the video, this definetely thought me so much. Changed my understanding completely. You are literally the best thank you for enlightining us!
