question, why not stick the axle in and then do the knuckle? seems like it'd be easier to get the thing in without jacking up a seal that way.

You absolutely can do that, but you would also need to torque the axle nut to 250 ft lbs. With enough experience you can avoid steps to save time.

Good chance of damaging the knuckle and/or toe link.

Yeah the tie rod /pitman arm tool from Harbor Freight is only $15 so not worth hitting it out.
