Oh yeah, K Series for the win!! That 10-bolt is gonna be sweet in the ol' Cub! I always use a dab of white grease on the tapered valve retainers for re-installation, works quite well. Also yeah, those adjustable valve lifters are a godsend, haha.
Oh yeah, I’ve got an old 216 w a k341 I acquired a while back for almost nothing, & since I just acquired 3 decent used Yanmar L70s I’m gonna hopefully get one good one then put it in the st16, then I’ve got engine issues w my 212 & my 67 110RF needs help. So I’ve got my hands full of projects till I can touch the 216.
That K series has an automatic compression release in it, you won't get an accurate reading from the tester. Send it. Put the 10hp back in the bolens, keep both tractors, plant yourself a garden.
Hay doc found my 820 trans today at a mower bone yard here in Wisconsin it's a 820 018 after 3 hours of pulling the giant cast hubs rusted pulley and a broken caliper bolt I'm about to crack her open for inspection and a lube job what sould I look for and how much gear lube sould I put in it after its clean I was planning on running gear oil I got the trans for 65$ out of a murray 18hp. I'm stoked on getting it rolling any tips or tricks would be helpful thanks
Hibernate.... I don't know what your talking about 🤔 (I was waiting for the snow to melt last week so I could anchor the tarp-shelter frame. Pitched 1/2"x24" rods into the ground like / and \ and tack-welded them at the top. Ended up putting the tarp up 20mins into the snow storm. Woke next day with 12" of snow 😅😂 So yeah, I'm hibernating too 🤷♂️ 😭
That is so accurate! Lol My son and I were just getting the canopy on when the flurries started. This was on Sunday the 10th, and by the time I ended up at the Remembrance Day service, I was ankle deep in snow. Blah!
Love your show Doc. I had a bolens 1255 repowered with a briggs 16hp opposed. Trans went down now i have a sears ss16 with 2 extra transmissions. By the way how in hell do you wrangle those valve spring keepers in place when its 27 degrees. Im from Oklahoma and I'm pretty useless under 40 degrees. Thanks

Those K series Kohler engines have a compression release cam to save wear and tear on the starter. You won't get an accurate compression reading from cranking.
@@DocSprocket only will get better the more it's run. I have one Kohler engine that feels like it has zero compression due to the compression release cam but once it fires it's a beast of an engine. Looking forward to the next build maybe a gas version of the diesel weasel👍

Hay enjoy your vids. I've been looking for a peerless 820 five speed with no luck can you point me in the right direction as far as what tractors had them or look for five bolt wheel tractor or did some have key type wheels any info would be appreciated thanks
Hi! Thanks for watching, I appreciate your support. You need to watch for garden tractors (not lawn tractors) with vertical shaft engines, and 12" rear wheels. Most of them would be 5-bolt wheels, but a few simply have a 1" keyed bore and are held on with a C-clip. Most of these machines will also have 8" front wheels instead of 6". Look carefully, though. I once got all hot and bothered over a Gilson, that made my whole life a lie... Lol It had 5 bolt 12" rear wheels, and the axle shafts looked the part. It wasn't till I got it home that I realized that the 3/4" axles had sleeves to make them LOOK like 1", and there were wheel adapters. I was a wee bit upset. Look carefully. Be willing to dig in. A peerless 820 will have a small metal identification tag right close to the brake caliper on the side, and you may have to scrape some crap off to read it.

Well, for one, cold and snow are two different things. Cold ain't much fun at all, especially when you get down to -20*C or so (-4*F) and you can't feel your fingers after 5 minutes. Snow is a LOT of fun to play in- not much fun when it takes you 3 to 4 times as long to get home from work... Like 2 hours...
