Electric Vehicle coldgate is concerning. But do you really know how cold temperature affect charging speed?
This video explains the relationship between battery % (SoC) and charging speed as well as how low battery temperature affects charging speed.
Vehicle used in the example is a Hyundai Kona EV 2020 64kWh.

I have the '22 version and here in Colorado we get some cold temps as well (not as cold as you) but each week I charge my Kona, I get about 120-140 miles of driven miles during the week. If the temperature is below 32* I can only pull 22-35kw. If the temperature is about 50* I jump into the 50-77kw range, which happened today while charging. I'm excited about the summer and charging temperature above 65*. Should go much faster. Great video.

Great video! Do you know if 2019 Kona in Canada have battery heating systems? Or is it 2020 models only?

From what I know, the Canadian 2019 Kona has the battery heater. Because 2019 Kona here seems to have the same charging curve in winter as the 2020.

Hi there from Ottawa. I enjoy your videos very much. I have a question for you. In some of your videos you show a little Unit that gives you battery 🔋 temperature . I am curious about the Unit ,how it is installed etc. Please let me know. I appreciate your Channel.

evobd2.com/ This is an OBD2 display for the Kona EV, E-Niro, and E-Soul. This display needs a USB power cable. The data it is displaying comes from a bluetooth OBD2 dongle installed on the OBD port. My first coldgate video explains this in more detail: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tb8iKVmJWcE.html

Hi, thanks for your videos. I just discovered your channel (but haven't watched all your videos yet). I also own a Kona EV (2019 model). If you don't mind, I'd have a few question : which model year is your kona? About charging, have you calculated the efficiency when charging at level 2 at home? Meaning for each kWh the battery stored, how many kWh was needed? From my tests, there's a loss of around 10-15%, so 1.1-1.15 kWh I use to increase the battery by 1 kWh. I have also just installed solar panels and will see how to optimise charging from solar. But that's another story 😉

I have the 2020 Kona EV. I don't have the ability to charge at home and rely on public Lv 2 and Lv 3 charging. Even though I haven't tracked Lv 2 charging loss in terms of energy, I have tracked it in terms of power. When the charger is supplying 6.2kW, the battery receives 5.5kW; a loss of 0.7kW which is 11%. When the charger is supplying 7.2kW, the battery receives 6.4kW; a loss of 0.8kW which is also 11%. So I would say AC charging loss of 10-15% is accurate.

Is battery warmer worth getting the convenience package or not ?

Where there is consistent cold weather below 0C, the battery heater is probably worth it. If the Kona's battery temp is at 1C you can charge at 24kW which isn't fast. At 6C you can charge at around 42kW which is decent. You can imagine all the coldgating that is going to happen if you have sustained ambient temp below 0C. The battery does not heat up that fast while charging without the battery heater.
