'Korean entertainment industry is toxic': Foreign actors in Korea

Foreign and immigrant artists of all types - actors, models, voice actors, musicians, dancers, and many more
have been adding to the richness of Korean society for decades. And most of them are on the E-6 Culture and Entertainment Visa.
However, some say the system for E-6 visa holders is flawed that it only offers enforcement protections to
Korean citizens and entirely excludes the largest percentage of foreign artists working and paying taxes in Korea.
This lack of protection puts all E-6 visa holders, and by extension all foreign artists, in a very vulnerable position.
According to a poll of F and E-6 visa holders working
in the television, advertising and film industries,
the majority had never been offered a contract to sign for their work.

The comment section reflects exactly how the people here in Korea react to any kind of complain by foreigners. These artists have already gone through a tough time gathering the courage to speak up and here you see people wanting them to just shut up. It's ridiculous.

Totally true but then again some of them are just annoying Korea boo that’s trying so hard to embed them self in the Korean culture when they know they will never truly be Koreans. Get over it and grow up Korea is not as it cracked out to be as you think it is, they got their issue to as you can.

No, that seems to be a minority. Being an artist is incredibly hard. Artists deserve rights in both Korea, US, and wherever.

@@chrisc1184 I suspect he's talking about typical reactions from Korean netizens to articles discussing foreigners in Korea. I agree with you regarding "being an artist". Every time there is an article discussing the treatment of expats in Korea, these types of comments are very common. I'd love to think that Korean as a whole believe what you wrote, but the comments I see here are typical of what I always see, albeit, it's much improved from a couple of years ago. Much improved.

@@kellyfrances4943 netizens are usually negative ppl w nothing to do. When u talk to irl ppl that are functioning members of society, the response is diff. Negative minded ppl often will engage in bs while positive ppl are going about their life. You can understand why comments sections are filled w negativity. The same goes for netizens of other countries that seem to have a sick joy out of pointing out problems in korea with zero awareness that some things are objectively worse or equally bad in their home countries. It's usually reflected in their tone and most of the time they don't even live in korea. On the flip side, most foreigners in korea are going about their life and living positively, and not spewing hatred.

I want to educate you! This is the standard that is the norm everywhere, including in Hollywood. Nobody signs contracts for extras and gigs in Hollywood or in any other western entertainment countries. I have worked for seven years as gigs in Hollywood, I never signed any contract and yes I am a foreigner in America. So stop nitpicking Korea. Why should Korean entertainment industry follow any international obligations when nobody else follows it! Including America. You are a naive kid and lot to learn about adult business. Besides if all the extras and gigs are given individual (non exploitative) contracts than Hollywood would have long been bankrupt. So Korea is no different.

LWC was right in saying that it's ironic that BTS spoke in America against crimes against Asian Americans when Korea is just as bad and worse against foreigners. Instead of preaching to people of a different country, they should have instead preached to their own. Bullying, harassment, blacklisting, so much is going on against foreigners in Korea. Some establishments like clubs won't even allow you inside if you're a foreigner. They don't have laws that criminalize discrimination in places of business. This is the 21st Century and Korea can't even protect Koreans and non-Koreans equally. Excuse me, but what? Is this a developing 3rd world nation?

Korea is worse? Are you high? Can you tell me where in South Korea young Korean men are trolling the streets, attacking elderly foreign people and killing them? Cause thats what was happening in the US during Covid, and most of the attacks comitted by black men, occasionally black women. I didnt see the black American community rise up and speak out against this but you wonder why foreign black people are then mistreated in Asia? Hello, Koreans have internet. They watch the news. They see elderly Asians being attacked for no reason. You think thats going to foster sympathy? (eye roll)

No it's not. GTFOH. It's absolutely not the same thing. Asian Americans are getting assaulted, murdered, violently robbed, and in some instances r*ped. This is not the same thing as being discriminated by a business or industry. I have no problems stating that Korea needs to improve but trying to compare being assaulted and murdered to discrimination is straight up BS. All this does is prove you have zero critical thinking skills and that goes for LWC too. I'm more than glad to share all the wonderful stories of these violent attacks if you'd like. There is a Korean translator right next to them who is translating everything they say. Why are people complaining about them not protesting in Korean? They want their message to be as clear as possible so they hired a Korean person to translate. This is for both English speaking and Korean media sources to report on. Also, if they are being casted in Korean productions shouldn't they be treated normally like other actors? They are there because Korean filmmakers want them to be there. If there wasn't a market for foreign actors they would not even be doing this. If Korean actors were experiencing this in any other country the Korean public wouldnt stand for it. Perhaps there should be some empathy towards human beings just trying to make a living in your country.

People are making that argument in a rude manner (not asking about it as a genuine question) do so because they lack a valid argument otherwise and resent the people they see. It's the sort of irrelevant, cognitively lazy thing that bullies point out when they don't want to admit "I am a racist" or "I resent the presence of foreigners in Korea and don't care to understand them" or (even worse), "I just like to be nasty and this is all I could bother to observe".

While your opinion is completely valid and true, Koreans have never been able to protest in their own language anywhere else in the world. @@koguy2 I agree! Both my statement and what you're saying can be true at the same time. If Koreans in America want to speak Korean and use a translator to get their point across they should have the right to and no one should think that is a reason to not listen to their message.

@@koguy2 It would be wonderful if places like America were truly inclusive that way. I imagine it would be tough to be effective if one protested in Korean in a place like America. We needed English language media in at least one instance in this case - though there were likely upwards of 15 Korean language news articles written about this event, which was largely conducted in Korean. One of my main concerns was that no one is educating those abroad who are potential targets for unethical recruiters. There is a growing visa milling problem right now, and it can be found on social media. Regardless, I appreciate and respect your feelings. I've seen John Michaels in many Korean dramas. He gave me inspiration to want to move to Korea to work, but realized a lot of people were giving warning against it. I listened and glad I did. If I ended up in a situation where I was potentially forced to go to bars or clubs I would have been deported and lost my shit. I was sexually assaulted when I was younger and there is no way anyone should be subjected or exploited for these Hollywood type of dirty ass people. The reason I didn't want to work in Hollywood was due to the sexualization and abuses that happen. I've always been disappointed and disenchanted by Korea for this...not just for foreigners but for the numerous Korean young women who were subjected to power plays by people. Sometimes...I sort of wish Park Bo Gum's Record of Youth scene where the gay designer wanted to sponsor him and make him big star took the wrong turn, and he played a role that pointed out the flaws of Korean entertainment instead of writers or production of Record of Youth taking a softer approach. There are so many kdramas I've watched that give us stories about powerful vs the vulnerable but the society who manages the talent are just as sick as these shows we watch. Hypocrisy is the real pandemic in this world.

Don't talk about hypocrisy.... stop being naive. And why would the kdrama storyline go into the seedy places if that's not the storyline?? They also have no anti-discrimination laws on the books, they can not rent an apartment to you because you’re black or deny you a job because you are a single mom, which you cannot do in the United States. The single mom thing would be protected under title VII in the United States as well as age discrimination which is quite common in Korea which you cannot do in the United States. You cannot fire someone or refuse to hire them because of their age. You would have to come up with another reason. In Korea they can do whatever they want to you regardless because those laws don’t exist. Due to many figures talking about these issues, I see more people taking a stand when people are talking about Asians in a negative way or threatening them whereas they may not have been so understanding. Before, many Asian Americans would often be gaslighted when talking about their issues about racial violence such as "what are you complaining about, you're privileged" and "you didn't even have it as bad as Black people." So yes, when they are lending their voice about hate crimes, it does make a difference. And you getting so affected about them talking about these issues does make you a hater. There is a different weight and significance inherently with things in the white house, and a political edge. If BTS was making commentary online, or even at their american concerts/interviews, it would be a different matter. You seem to be miffed that i am not simping for BTS? As many others, the goverment is corrupt, laws for abuse extremely lax, bullying in schools is a very serious issue, and the people are stuck in the past. Not to mention the overly "respectful" culture where you can't make a real friend who's older than you because there are very strict boundaries between people. Korea has a lot of catching up to do. That's right, in some other nations it probably does, and I think we can agree that's bad. And in some other entirely different nations things like this do not happen or are at least protected by laws, and I think we could agree that's good. Which group of nations would you rather that Korea be associated with?

Which one ?😂😂 give me a name because I do not remember any country in western side give job without contract . It’s illegal and you can pay a lot of money to government if they catch you . Even a student job , you have a contract , we have organization specialized to the right of student and it’s free . If you have any complain you can go there and have access to attorney to help you so stop thinking that the behavior of South Korean is everywhere.

So glad to have been a member of SAG/AFTRA here in the US for the last 47 years. No production company here would dare to pull that kind of crap on actors or performers. Whenever I had a problem, the union was there to go to bat for me and I'll always be grateful.

Fascinating...who knew there was such a disparity in the way non-nationals are treated in the entertainment industry. If this is happening in the entertainment industry to well-educated and articulate people imagine how other non-Koreans in other jobs are exploited? Korea exploited their Hallyu Wave to increase their economic standingand now they have to start examining their laws and practices as the wider world casts an eye on Korea!

Finally i start to see people that put more video about the REAL korea. Now i wish they start to do this for the foreigner that work in factories or farms!! This is where you see the deep dark side of Korea. Also lets talk about the corrupt, sexist and racist police, how many times i saw and heard about a foreign girls that get almost raped or raped by a korean boy and korean girls accusing foreign boy just for money while everyone around knows its fake, but for police if you foreigner even if you are a victim you stand no chance, they will do everything to not help you and if they have no choice they will try to tell you to just forget it because it will make trouble for their dear (rapists and evil b*tchs) korean citizens...

Everyone who immigrate to a foreign country deserve the same rights as all citizens there. You have to adapt to the culture, to the language, they have family there, they have rights too, is time we start treating each other with respect, that is the first step if we want to change this world for a better future for the next generation. My respect to all of you.

Best comment. I guess they never heard about the JYJ-SM battle (and this concerned contractual terms and compensation, right?). JYJ was just about blacklisted by the entertainment industry in Korea that they had to perform in foreign countries. Nobody would take XIA Junsu in, so he went to musical theater, which accepted him and he ended up with sellout performances and awards.

@@mariatolentino4516 yeah that happens a lot. the Koreans can’t do anything about it if anything foreigners have more of a voice because they can always go home and talk about it on western media/news stations Koreans can’t do that without getting repercussions back home.
