Dr. Fouser leads a fascinating and eye-opening exploration into the ideology, values, and activism of Korean students in the 1980s. He discusses and demonstrates the agency of that generation when contrasted to the people of today. He talks about 사대문안 as the traditional center of Seoul and how it's changing over time, with things moving south of the river as well as emerging migrant communities. The Korean language and Dr. Fouser’s experiences of writing 5 books in Korean and regular Korean-language columns for various national newspapers are also explored.
Robert J. Fouser was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He holds a B.A. in Japanese language and literature, an M.A. in applied linguistics, both from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in applied linguistics from Trinity College Dublin. He writes frequently on Korean society and culture and has been active in promoting hanok preservation.

What a brainy guy. Korea's future seems even brighter after listening to this. I've enjoyed his work in the Herald.

Completely agree. Dr. Fouser's intelligence is evident. And yes, I think there are many reasons to be positive for the future. And, moreover, we have a responsibility to help the next generation embrace this positivity.

Absolutely - love when people speak with passion about things they experienced. I'm getting lots of 대리만족 from these conversations and learned so much about the 1980s from Bob here.

When trying to contextualise history looking at the declassified files from the great powers is a must (especially the embassy).

@@DavidTizzard People should be more aware of these groups like the Rand corp: Pentagon Papers Overextending & Unbalancing Russia War with China thinking through the unthinkable They seem to one of the groups who are behind actual us policy instead of the american public. If we include Kissinger documents on China, the focus of american foreign policy is to encircle and wreck China including the surrounding neighbourhood. We saw the consequenes of this policy during the 1970's.

The story of the idealistic student who asked to be failed reminds me of a somewhat less principled student who wrote to me at the end of my first term teaching in Korea asking me to pass him even though he hadn't attended a single class through the term. His excuse was that he had been too busy campaigning for democracy on campus to go to my classes. I failed him anyway, but I was then informed that failed students had to be offered 2 more chances to take their exams. The term had already overrun because of lecture boycotts, and replay number 2 would take me past Christmas, so I gave him a pass on the second attempt, along with all the other students I'd failed.

Thousands of Australians like me are wilfully learning Korean here because we want to travel and do business with south Korea as well as our love for BTS and their music. Why learn Korean given the abundance of translation tools? It's because we want to spend considerable time in SK but also we know there are fabulous writers and poets and song writers whose work we want to understand the depth of the writing.

Also I find I really love Hangul, it's syllables and grammar. Ci learned quite a few European languages but I find Korean is fun.

IT is my business and part of falling in love with SK relates to their high tech. What Samsung and Hyundai are doing for instance is globally impressive. I would love you to talk to a Samsung chaebol member if possible. The other topic I'd love to hear about is reunification please.

Great interview!😊 I've recently discovered and have been reading about the US occupation forces and military in the 30 years after the war and OMFG, the HORRORS. Of course, we've all heard and read about the "comfort women" system for the Japanese army, but what about the "comfort women" system for the US army? And the economic impact of this system? Under the rug. As cold as numbers can be, I was left horrified by some of the numbers these articles talked about.

Thank you for enjoying Dr. Fouser. He's a great guy! And yes, that is a very sad and tragic history that often gets silenced by the stories of comfort women of the Japanese Imperial Army. Have you read Katharine Moon's book Sex Among Allies? It does some very important research on the subject even if it is hard to read at times because it's just so sad. cup.columbia.edu/book/sex-among-allies/9780231106436

@@mellafuri8451 America's glories and failures are better known than many others' these days, I think. But all countries have their problems. This was certainly one that has impacted the peninsula. By the same token, South Korea is also now a prospering modern democracy with great freedoms and liberties for its people.

My perception is that Han does exist today. I see it in the depth of the lyrics of BTS's song writing... The moods, the colours... The millions of fans who cry when reading and feeling the lyrics. Our hearts and souls are touched.
@DavidTizzard
@DavidTizzard Год назад
Who do you think is the best lyricist in BTS and what's the best example of it? I thought J-hope's bars in his song On The Street with J. Cole were really simple and underwhelming. Suga's stuff as Agust D was pretty basic. And the group's recent biggest hits were all written by other people: Ed Sheeran, etc. Just wondering where a fan finds the best example of their lyricism... :)

@@DavidTizzard i can tell you are not a fan of BTS 🤣. It's a combination of the lyrics the music the feeling imbued in the performance. The overall vibe. It's a multi dimensional impact on different senses. . Suga and Namjoon i think excel with lyrics and rapping them.
